Sar Imaging Using Fully Random Bandlimited Signals, Dmitriy S. Garmatyuk, Ram M. Narayanan Jan 2000

Sar Imaging Using Fully Random Bandlimited Signals, Dmitriy S. Garmatyuk, Ram M. Narayanan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A coherent ultrawideband (UWB) random noise synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been developed and tested at the University of Nebraska. It has been experimentally shown that this type of radar is capable of extracting the phase and the amplitude of the backscattered signal, thus enabling us to create target profiles in the frequency domain. The use of fully random waveforms (bandlimited noise) as the transmit signal is analyzed in this paper. A UWB signal model is developed and radar signal processing is simulated to yield statistical characteristics of image formation using stochastic waveforms. The influence of UWB signal characteristics on …

The Effect Of Ceo Tenure On The Relation Between Firm Performance And Turnover, Sam Allgood, Kathleen A. Farrell Jan 2000

The Effect Of Ceo Tenure On The Relation Between Firm Performance And Turnover, Sam Allgood, Kathleen A. Farrell

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

We analyze the effect of CEO tenure on the relation between firm performance and forced turnover. We find that the performance-forced turnover relation is conditional on CEO tenure. Our results suggest a constant negative relation between firm performance and forced turnover throughout an inside CEO’s tenure. Founders are entrenched early in their careers but held accountable for firm performance later in their careers. We find evidence that outside hires experience a probationary period, followed by a period of apparent entrenchment during their intermediate years that weakens later in their tenure.

A Dialogue Of The Deaf: Hebrew Pedagogy And Anti-Jewish Polemic In Sebastian Münster's Messiahs Of The Christians And The Jews (1529/39), Stephen G. Burnett Jan 2000

A Dialogue Of The Deaf: Hebrew Pedagogy And Anti-Jewish Polemic In Sebastian Münster's Messiahs Of The Christians And The Jews (1529/39), Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The majority of Christian Hebraists during the early years of the Reformation devoted their attention to studying the Hebrew text of the Old Testament and the Hebrew language itself. Heeding the humanist admonition to "return to the sources," Martin Bucer, Konrad Pellikan, and a number of other scholars used their new skills to create a plethora of new Bible translations, biblical commentaries, and linguistic helps. Greater knowledge of Hebrew and Jewish literature also made these scholars aware of Jewish anti-Christian polemics. Jewish biblical commentators such as David Kimhi and the authors of books such as Sefer Nizzahon and Toledot Yesu …

Low Coherence Fiber Optics For Random Noise Radar, Ruixiang Jiang, Kyle W. Wolfe, Lim Nguyen Jan 2000

Low Coherence Fiber Optics For Random Noise Radar, Ruixiang Jiang, Kyle W. Wolfe, Lim Nguyen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Coherent random noise radar has been developed at the University of Nebraska for the detection and identification of shallow subsurface objects such as land mines. Other application ranges from remote sensing, synthetic aperture radar and high-resolution interferometer, to covert target tracking. in this paper, we describe the experimental investigation of a novel applicntion of superfluorescent fiber or erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) light sources(SFS) for random noise radar. The ultra-wide band noise coupled with the use of optical fiber delay lines makes SFS ideally suited for random noise radar applications. Optical fiber- makes long and multiple-step delay lines of a …

It Takes A Woman To Play A Real Man: Clara As Hero(Ine) Of Beaumont And Fletcher’S Love’S Cure, Anne Duncan Jan 2000

It Takes A Woman To Play A Real Man: Clara As Hero(Ine) Of Beaumont And Fletcher’S Love’S Cure, Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

My analysis of Love’s Cure follows Jonathan Dollimore’s distinction between two kinds of transgression to be found in literary artifacts: “humanist transgression” and “transgressive reinscription.” The goal of humanist transgression is to escape or transcend the social/ideological construct it opposes. It anticipates Romantic and idealistic notions of freedom and subjectivity. Modern critics often tend to view humanist transgression as the only “real” transgression; Dollimore cites as an example of this view Linda Woodbridge’s disappointment with the seemingly proto-feminist rhetoric of the Hic Mulier figure. In Woodbridge’s view, Hic Mulier’s assertion of gender equality is undermined by the fact that she …

Review Of Masada Vi: Yigael Yadin Excavations 1963–1965. Final Reports: Hebrew Fragments From Masada, By Shemaryahu Talmon; And The Ben Sira Scroll From Masada, By Yigael Yadin., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This is the sixth volume of the final report of the late Yigael Yadin’s excavations on Masada from 1963-1965. The trustees of Yadin’s literary legacy, the late N. Avigad, J. Amiran, and A. Ben-Tor, are publishing not only the final reports on Masada, but also on Hazor and Nahal Hever. They are to be commended for the fine quality of their work. The present volume includes the publication of the fragmentary Hebrew manuscripts found on Masada, which Yadin entrusted to Prof. Shemaryahu Talmon of the Hebrew University before his death in 1984. These documents include seven biblical manuscripts: one manuscript …

Women Managers And Gendered Values, Diane Kay Sloan, Kathleen J. Krone Jan 2000

Women Managers And Gendered Values, Diane Kay Sloan, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In this study we interviewed 30 women managers to better understand ways in which they experience gendered values and behavior in organizational leadership and their responses to those experiences. The results, based on a constant comparison, thematic analysis, indicate the emergence of surprisingly strong and similar perceptions among the 30 women that there are distinct feminine and masculine power orientations in leadership communication with corresponding sets of gendered values: (a) open/closed and (b) supportive/intimidating. Their most common responses were: (a) rejection of masculine power, (b) self-doubt and blame, (c) competence, (d) confrontation, (e) isolation, and (f) resignation. These women judge …

Exploiting Don't Cares To Enhance Functional Tests, Mark W. Weiss, Sharad C. Seth, Shashank K. Mehta, Kent L. Einspahr Jan 2000

Exploiting Don't Cares To Enhance Functional Tests, Mark W. Weiss, Sharad C. Seth, Shashank K. Mehta, Kent L. Einspahr

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In simulation based design verification, deterministic or pseudo-random tests are used to check functional correctness of a design. In this paper we present a technique generating tests by specifying the don’t care inputs in the functional specifications so as to improve their coverage of both design errors and manufacturing faults. The don’t cares are chosen to maximize sensitization of signals in the circuit. The tests generated in this way require only a fraction of pseudo-exhaustive test patterns to achieve a high multiplicity of fault coverage.

Strepsipteran Parasitism Of White Leafhoppers, Cofana Spp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) In Lowland Rice In Côte D’Ivoire, I. O. Oyediran, A. Ndongidila, E. A. Heinrichs Jan 2000

Strepsipteran Parasitism Of White Leafhoppers, Cofana Spp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) In Lowland Rice In Côte D’Ivoire, I. O. Oyediran, A. Ndongidila, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Three tests were conducted over a 2-year period in lowland irrigated rice fields on the WARDA Research Station at Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, to obtain information on the strepsipteran parasitism of white leafhoppers, Cofana spectra and C. unimaculata. Rice cultivars were sampled with a sweep net to collect leafhoppers for determination of the relative abundance of the two leafhopper species and the effect of rice cultivar and rice crop age on the leafhopper populations and percent strepsipteran parasitism. Dissections of the leafhoppers were made to determine the relative number of the various parasitic stages in the leafhoppers. Cofana unimaculata populations …

Contracts And Costs In A Corporate/Government System Dynamics Network: A United States Case, F. Gregory Hayden, Steven R. Bolduc Jan 2000

Contracts And Costs In A Corporate/Government System Dynamics Network: A United States Case, F. Gregory Hayden, Steven R. Bolduc

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Social scientists have come to understand that society is a set of integrated values, beliefs, institutions, technology, and ecological systems as explicitly laid out in Figure 1 (Hayden 1988, 1997). Societal integration and organization takes place through the on—going processing of overlapping institutions and their organizations. The components of transorganizational frameworks, as demonstrated in Figure 1, create and structure the networks within which organizations such as business corporations and government agencies function. “Trans” as used in this sense means across. Across organizational networks normative criteria are provided by social beliefs, technology, and ecological systems (Hayden, 1998). From basic criteria, numerous …

Evidence For Edge Effects On Multiple Levels In Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, John Faaborg Jan 2000

Evidence For Edge Effects On Multiple Levels In Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, John Faaborg

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We tested how edges affect nest survival and predator distribution in a native tallgrass prairie system in southwestern Missouri using artificial nests, natural nests of Dickcissels (Spiza americana) and Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus henslowii), and mammal track stations. Survival of artificial nests was lower within 30 m of forest edge. Nesting success of Dickcissels and Henslow's Sparrows was lower within 50 m to a shrubby edge than at greater distances, whereas fates of nests were not related to distances to roads, agricultural fields, or forests. Evidence from clay eggs placed in artificial nests indicated that mid-sized carnivores …

Waterfowl Research Priorities In The Northern Great Plains, Robert R. Cox, Douglas H. Johnson, Michael A. Johnson, Ronald E. Kirby, Jeffrey W. Nelson, Ronald E. Reynolds Jan 2000

Waterfowl Research Priorities In The Northern Great Plains, Robert R. Cox, Douglas H. Johnson, Michael A. Johnson, Ronald E. Kirby, Jeffrey W. Nelson, Ronald E. Reynolds

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

It is necessary periodically to identify research priorities so that future research will be directed toward the most pertinent issues in waterfowl ecology and management. To that end, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center convened a quorum of experts on the ecology of breeding waterfowl, the Waterfowl Working Group, to 1) develop a mission statement, 2) identify waterfowl research priorities in the northern Great Plains, and 3) determine the frequency for re-identifying research needs. Research needs (nonprioritized) identified by the group and described in detail herein included: 1) determine effects of landscape factors on demographics and recruitment of ducks in the …

A Surface-Associated Activity Trap For Capturing Water-Surface And Aquatic Invertebrates In Wetlands, Mark A. Hanson, Christiane C. Roy, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Kyle D. Zimmer, Michael R. Riggs, Malcolm G. Butler Jan 2000

A Surface-Associated Activity Trap For Capturing Water-Surface And Aquatic Invertebrates In Wetlands, Mark A. Hanson, Christiane C. Roy, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Kyle D. Zimmer, Michael R. Riggs, Malcolm G. Butler

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We developed a surface-associated activity trap (SAT) for sampling aquatic invertebrates in wetlands. We compared performance of this trap with that of a conventional activity trap (AT) based on nondetection rates and relative abundance estimates for 13 taxa of common wetland invertebrates and for taxon richness using data from experiments in constructed wetlands. Taxon-specific non-detection rates for ATs generally exceeded those of SATs, and largest improvements using SATs were for Chironomidae and Gastropoda. SATs were efficient at capturing cladocera, Chironomidae, Gastropoda, total Crustacea, and multiple taxa (taxon richness) but were only slightly better than ATs at capturing Dytiscidae. Temporal differences …
