Minotaur Or The King’S Bull. By Jonathon Ward. Urban Youth Theater, Henry Street Settlement Abrons Arts Center, New York. 23 July 1999 (Performance Review), Patricia Herrera

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

The production of Minotaur was not only a reinterpretation of an ancient Greek myth, but an opportunity for Latino hip-hop artists to pass down a cultural tradition to the next generation. Latino artists situated hip-hop as a social movement, and the teen performers physically embodied this in the songs and dance. In this way, the Athenian rebellion became the breaking of stereotypes often associated with urban youths. The performers beautifully portrayed this act of resistance when Theseus took Minos’ golden crown, wore it, and passed it down for all the Athenians to wear.

A Laboratory Sensitivity Study Of Hydraulic Parameters Important In The Deployment Of Fixed-In-Place Scour-Monitoring Devices, Dennis A. Lyn, E. Neseem, A. Ramachandra Rao, A. G. Altschaeffl Jan 2000

A Laboratory Sensitivity Study Of Hydraulic Parameters Important In The Deployment Of Fixed-In-Place Scour-Monitoring Devices, Dennis A. Lyn, E. Neseem, A. Ramachandra Rao, A. G. Altschaeffl

JTRP Technical Reports

INDOT is considering the deployment of fixed scour-monitoring instrumentation as part of a systematic response to the problem of scour around bridge piers. Fixed-in-place automated scour-monitoring devices measure the depth of scour at the point where they are installed. Unless they are installed at the location where maximum scour occurs, their readings may give a misleading estimate of scour potential. This raises a number of technical issues concerning their effective deployment and the interpretation of the collected data, which should be resolved in order to maximize the benefits to INDOT from using these monitoring devices. These include the location of …

Louis Comfort Tiffany's Chapel: From The 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition To The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum Of American Art, Gail A. Gray

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In the history of nineteenth-century decorative arts, Louis Comfort Tiffany stands out as a giant among men. He produced such an imposing quantity of decorative arts that the attention of scholars has been largely focused on them. While this is a well-deserved recognition, Tiffany's oeuvre encompasses so much more than his famous lamps and vases. He created a prodigious amount of art in several different media including oils, watercolors, mosaics, windows, furniture, interior design, and landscape. This paper will examine one of the most famous, and perhaps best, of Tiffany's interiors, the Chapel he created for the 1893 Chicago Columbian …

The Sound Of Prejudice : A Look At Rodgers And Hammerstein's Asian Musicals And Racial Stereotypes, Loretta M. Pippin Jan 2000

The Sound Of Prejudice : A Look At Rodgers And Hammerstein's Asian Musicals And Racial Stereotypes, Loretta M. Pippin

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

While the minority musicals ofRodgers and Hammerstein use the music and dance traditions of the American musical, they are less successful in their attempts to transcend the racism inherent in the traditions of popular musicals and films. Some musicals are of particular interest to me because they deal with attempts to integrate people of Asian extraction into the mainstream of American popular culture. As a result, the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein emerge as a blend of awareness of racism and often unconscious use of racist conventions.

Monitoring Of Long-Term Performance Of Highway Bridge Columns Retrofitted By Advanced Composite Jackets In Indiana, Ming-Hung Teng, Elisa D. Sotelino, Wai-Fah Chen Jan 2000

Monitoring Of Long-Term Performance Of Highway Bridge Columns Retrofitted By Advanced Composite Jackets In Indiana, Ming-Hung Teng, Elisa D. Sotelino, Wai-Fah Chen

JTRP Technical Reports

The service life of highway bridges is limited by the deterioration of their substructure components. In the U.S., it is estimated that more than 240,000 (about 40%) of the highway bridges are functionally or structurally deficient. Repairing these deteriorated bridges using traditional methods is usually time-consuming and expensive. Furthermore, these methods are such that they can cause a number of problems, such as being a threat to public safety and severe traffic disruption. Thus, it is important that new safer and more efficient methods be developed. Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) have a great potential to provide such a solution. Due …

Relationship Between Body Image Dissatisfaction And Fear Of Fatness To Severity Of Smoking Behavior In A Non-Clinical Adolescent Population, Louis J. Bevilacqua, Jr. Jan 2000

Relationship Between Body Image Dissatisfaction And Fear Of Fatness To Severity Of Smoking Behavior In A Non-Clinical Adolescent Population, Louis J. Bevilacqua, Jr.

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the U.S., yet it continues to kill more people than AIDS, automobile crashes, alcohol and drug abuse, murders, suicides, and fires---combined! In addition to a higher risk of dying prematurely, those who smoke are much more likely to experience numerous health problems. Other associated problems include dependency and tolerance to nicotine. Frequently, those who smoke are also more likely to use other substances such as marijuana, cocaine, heroine, and especially alcohol. These findings are frightening considering that it is estimated that 4.5 million are adolescents. The reasons why adolescents smoke range …

Case Study Of A Cognitive Behavioral Intervention For The Problem Of Marital Division Of Labor, Lily Woo Bollinger Jan 2000

Case Study Of A Cognitive Behavioral Intervention For The Problem Of Marital Division Of Labor, Lily Woo Bollinger

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This clinical dissertation concerns an evaluation of a Cognitive-Behavioral Marital Therapy intervention designed to help resolve the issue of division of household labor and thereby increase marital satisfaction. There were six ninety-minute group marital sessions. There were 3 couples in the group. The sessions contained interventions to increase communication skills, problem-solving skills and raise empathy for the spouse who did more chores. The case study couple's score indicated that the husband had a higher level of marital satisfaction. The wife's final score indicated a small increase in marital satisfaction. Both had an increased score in being more self-centered.

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango Jan 2000

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango

WCBT Faculty Publications

One of the major challenges in the development of a new venture is the need for different thinking styles over time. The growing body of research on entrepreneurship has largely ignored the influence of cognition during the evolution of the new venture. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model which shows how cognitive make-up may influence the success of the new venture growth process. This line of inquiry may prove fruitful in explaining why many creative ideas and once successful ventures fail to succeed. Also, matching task demands and thinking styles should increase entrepreneurial satisfaction and the chances of …

The Current Structure Of Intellect Remediation Lab As An Intervention For Deficient Readers In Grades 3, 4, And 5, Donna Turner Campbell Jan 2000

The Current Structure Of Intellect Remediation Lab As An Intervention For Deficient Readers In Grades 3, 4, And 5, Donna Turner Campbell

Dissertations

Problem. Educational testing procedures focus on identification and classification of students rather than on remediation for their abilities. The Structure of Intellect (SOI) model proposes a multidimensional view of intelligence with a focus on remediation for underdeveloped or nonexistent abilities as they relate to school achievement.

Purpose. The purposes of this study were to determine if participation in the SOI remediation lab had a measurable effect on reading achievement with third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students, and to describe SOI learning profiles of students with below grade reading skills.

Methodology. The subjects for this quasi-experimental study were third-, fourth-, and …

Leadership Requirements In The 21st Century : The Perceptions Of Canadian Public Sector Leaders, M. Ruth Dantzer Jan 2000

Leadership Requirements In The 21st Century : The Perceptions Of Canadian Public Sector Leaders, M. Ruth Dantzer

Dissertations

Problem. Since 1995, with the realization that by 2005 more than 61% of executives in the senior ranks of the Canadian Public Service would be eligible for retirement (La Releve, 1998), the need to recruit and develop competent leaders has become a matter of urgent attention.

Method. Public sector leaders were surveyed by mail-in questionnaires as to their ratings of a set of leadership competencies. Analogue research for privatesector leaders, conducted by a colleague, was incorporated for some analysis. A stratified sample of the general public was also surveyed by telephone regarding a subset of the same competencies.

Results. Public …

Department Of Justice Antitrust Enforcement, 1955-1997: An Empirical Study, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Joseph C. Gallo, Joseph L. Craycraft, Charles J. Parker

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This is an empirical study of Department of Justice (DOJ) enforcement of the antitrust laws. Its purpose is fourfold:

1.To update Posner's study "A Statistical Study of Antitrust Enforcement" (Posner, 1970, pp. 365-419).

2.To provide consistent and comparable measures of antitrust enforcement effort by the Department of Justice.

3.To report these measurements in a concise and systematic way in order to encourage empirical studies of antitrust issues.

4.To explore some implications for antitrust issues.

The purpose is to present the overall historical record of DOJ antitrust activity as well as some patterns in that history. More detailed analysis is left …

Fine-Tuning The Exercise Formula, David Swain Jan 2000

Fine-Tuning The Exercise Formula, David Swain

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) One hundred years ago, our forebears consumed more calories than we do today, yet they were leaner. Labor-saving devices were a rarity, and so in everyday life most people worked very hard physically. Obesity was present, of course, but afflicted only a small fraction of the population. We are not as fortunate today.

Directing Jean Anouilh’S Antigone: Dramaturgical Protocol And Director’S Notebook, Jr Norman Luker

Whittier Scholars Program

Dear Reviewer, as my senior project for the Whittier Scholars Program it was my honor to produce, direct, and dramaturg Jean Anouilh’s Antigone as a mainstage production for [the] Whittier College Theater Arts Department. The original documents collected within this binder represent the process through which the production came together. The collection includes dramaturgical research (articles with my original notes), production planning notes, design conceptions, relentless schedules, audition and casting information, dramaturgical notes, critical reviews and most importantly seven weeks of rehearsal journals. However, the real meat of the project were the actual performances where all the planning, designing, and …
