Kindred Nature: Victorian And Edwardian Women Embrace The Living World By Barbara T. Gates Book Review, Vera Norwood Jan 2000

Kindred Nature: Victorian And Edwardian Women Embrace The Living World By Barbara T. Gates Book Review, Vera Norwood

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

The most famous figure in Kindred Nature is Beatrix Potter, the author of the Peter Rabbit stories. Potter's talents in mycology and scientific illustration are less well known. Moreover, why Potter turned from her pursuits in nature study to write animal stories for children has been given very little attention. Feminist historians of science are beginning to examine the life stories of women like Potter to expand our understandings of women's contributions to the biological sciences. Barbara Gates practices such a retrieval in her study of British women's roles in nature study and appreciation during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Major Investment Study: East Los Angeles' Quest For A Rail Line, Joanna Cucchi

Whittier Scholars Program

This project provides a literature review of the environment, social equity, and planning theory of East LA which discusses pollution to politics of public transportation. This study then branches off to discuss East Los Angeles and the alternatives and process of deciding on transportation. Further details are provided about public part and designicipation with concerns of the community and their opinions as well as technicalities such as cost and effectiveness. Attached at the rear is an appendix of maps and technical drawings.

We propose mathematical performance measures by which the robustness, imperceptibility and information content of various watermarking methods could be measured. These measures rely in the notion of equivalence in the perceptual domain and some basic information-theoretic concepts. Based on these measures we show that the success of image watermarking heavily depend on the functional form of the human visual system perceptual mask. We also analyse the implication for robust watermarking of some commonly used perceptual masks.

Water Conservation Incentives For New Mexico: Policy And Legislative Alternatives, William M. Fleming, Emlen Hall Jan 2000

Water Conservation Incentives For New Mexico: Policy And Legislative Alternatives, William M. Fleming, Emlen Hall

Law of the Rio Chama

A broad range of options for encouraging municipal, industrial and agricultural water conservation are proposed for water-short New Mexico. Of particular interest are feasible options within the existing institutional and legal framework, focusing on measures that could be implemented without statutory changes by the Office of the State Engineer and the Interstate Stream Commission. Definitions of water conservation and beneficial use should be adopted, with emphasis on efficiency and economic feasibility. A "water conservation policy handbook" should be developed, with guidelines for preparing conservation plans and information on available conservation grants and water banking opportunities. Additional funding for water conservation …

Dimensionless Invariants For The Optimal Size (Age) Of Sex Change, Eric Charnov, Unnur Skúladóttir Jan 2000

Dimensionless Invariants For The Optimal Size (Age) Of Sex Change, Eric Charnov, Unnur Skúladóttir

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Optimization models have been widely and successfully used in evolutionary ecology to predict the attributes of organisms; perhaps the greatest quantitative success is in the area of sex allocation (sex ratio, sperm versus eggs for hermaphrodites, time as a male [female] for a sex changer), where the fact of having only one mother and one father makes Darwinian fitness a simple product of gain-via-male times gain-via-female. Previous work on sex change used the maximization of this male—female product to successfully predict the direction and age (size) for sex change, and that age has been shown to imply a breeding sex …

Delay Effects On Static Output Feedback Stabilization, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu Jan 2000

Delay Effects On Static Output Feedback Stabilization, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper addresses conditions for characterizing static output feedback controllers including delays for some proper (finite-dimensional) transfer functions. The interest of such study is in controlling systems which can not be stabilized by the classical, non-delayed static output feedback, and its difficulty lies in computing delay intervals guaranteeing closed-loop stability, since stability switches/reversals may occur for the same (matrix) gain if the delay is seen as `free' (design) parameter. The derived conditions are expressed in terms of some appropriate matrix pencils or MIMO Nyquist tests. Illustrative examples are also presented.

Robust Non-Fragile Lq Controllers: The Static State Feedback Case, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Domenico Famularo, Peter Dorato, Wassim M. Haddad, Ali Jadbabaie

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes the synthesis of non-fragile or resilient regulators for linear systems. A general framework for fragility is described using state-space methodologies, and the LQ/H2 static state-feedback problem is examined in detail. We discuss the multiplicative structured uncertainties case, and propose remedies of the fragility problem using an optimization programming framework via matrix inequalities. A special case that leads to a convex optimization framework via linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) will be considered. The benchmark problem is taken as an example to show how special controller gain variations can affect the performance of the closed-loop system.
