S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program Jan 2000

S C O R P State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan Nebraska Action Program

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Over a third of nonresidents who visit Nebraska in the summer months go to attractions and events. For each attraction or event visited, they spend an average of a halfday longer stay in Nebraska and spend an additional $64, according to data from Nebraska's OED. Outdoor recreation will likely continue to increase with active families, climbing incomes, and shorter work weeks. However, Nebraskans may spend more on long weekends and vacations closer to home in coming years if fuel prices keep climbing. If Nebraska is to meet existing and expected recreation and tourism demands, the long-range statewide forecasts to meet …

Much To Do About Something: Destabilizing Law's Support Of Dominant Ideologies In The Context Of Lesbian Mother Custody Claims In Canada, Natasha Kim Jan 2000

Much To Do About Something: Destabilizing Law's Support Of Dominant Ideologies In The Context Of Lesbian Mother Custody Claims In Canada, Natasha Kim

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article surveys a very specific legal context: the claims of mothers, who are lesbians, in custody disputes over their children, with their heterosexual ex-spouses, in Canadian courts. The author examines the developments in judgments surrounding custody involving a lesbian mother over the past two and a half decades, focusing on the line of reasoning within the judgments rather than the substantive results (that is, to whom custody is granted). The end result will be an attempt to better understand the interaction between law as a discourse and the dominant ideologies of familialism, motherhood, and heteronormativity. In Part Two, the …

Literature For Life, Ruenruthai Sujjapun Jan 2000

Literature For Life, Ruenruthai Sujjapun

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

"Literature for life" is a unique type of Thai contemporary literature. It has risen to prominence in the history of Thai contemporary literature in at least two periods. The first period was between A.D.1947 and 1957 and the second was the October 14, 1973-October 6, 1976 era. Literature for life was influenced by the concept of "art of life's sake," which was much discussed in literary magazines between 1947 and 1957, particularly by Asni Phonlachan, who criticized traditional Thai literature from the point of view of "art of life sake" and Udom Sisuwan, who saw Sri Burapha's novels as "literature …

Canonicity And Commercialization In Woolf's Uniform Edition, John K. Young Jan 2000

Canonicity And Commercialization In Woolf's Uniform Edition, John K. Young

English Faculty Research

This paper considers Virginia Woolf the publisher alongside Virginia Woolf the author. While the Hogarth Press has long been known for making Woolf "the only woman in England free to write what I like," it also made her free to be published as she liked. Hogarth, Jane Marcus argues, "gave Woolf a way of negotiating the terms of literary publicity, and a space somewhere between the private, the coterie, and the public sphere" (144-5). I will examine one such negotiation, the Uniform Edition of Woolf's works, a series designed to capitalize on her growing recognition and marketability. Once the Woolfs …

Woolf’S Mrs. Dalloway, John K. Young

English Faculty Research

The famous skywriting scene in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway owes more to 1920s advertising culture than has been previously recognized. In their rapt reading of the “Kreemo” aerial ad, the London pedestrians create both a commentary on consumerism and a model of collaborative, modernist reading.

Software Piracy: Attitudes & Opinions Of Computer Users And Implications For Software Manufacturers & Consumers, Bharath Pola Jan 2000

Software Piracy: Attitudes & Opinions Of Computer Users And Implications For Software Manufacturers & Consumers, Bharath Pola

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Computer software became registered as a form of literary expression by the United States Copyright Office in 1964. By 1980, the Copyright Act was amended to explicitly include software applications. Today, it is illegal to create copies of original program disks without express permission from the manufacturer (Microsoft 1994). The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) states that $2.4 billion worth of copyrighted software was pirated in 1990. This figure represents almost one-half of the total revenue of the software industry for that year. An additional $10 to $12 billion was lost to pirates overseas. However, such statistics maintained by …

The Impact On Ipo Assurance Fees Of Commercial Bank Entry Into The Equity Underwriting Market, Neil L. Fargher, L. Paige Fields, Michael S. Wilkins Jan 2000

The Impact On Ipo Assurance Fees Of Commercial Bank Entry Into The Equity Underwriting Market, Neil L. Fargher, L. Paige Fields, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

Changes in the provisions of the United States Banking Act of 1933 have allowed the entry of commercial banks into the initial public offering (IPO) underwriting market. In this paper, we examine the effect of commercial bank equity underwriting on the fees paid to auditors. We predict that IPO assurance fees will be higher for equity offerings underwritten by commercial banks than for offerings handled by traditional underwriters because (1) commercial banks are relatively inexperienced in bringing firms public, requiring additional assistance from accounting firms in the IPO process; (2) new entrants into the underwriting market may manage lower quality …

The Hollywood Shuffle: Protecting Film Investors, Mark Litwak Jan 2000

The Hollywood Shuffle: Protecting Film Investors, Mark Litwak

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In Los Angeles, the city of a thousand stories, many tales are told by financiers who complain they have been cheated by producers or distributors. As would be expected in any industry grossing about seven billion dollars annually at the domestic box office, the movie business attracts more than its fair share of disreputable characters. The glamour of the business ensures a steady stream of star-struck investors motivated by non-financial concerns. This combination of the unsavory and inexperienced often produces hand-shake deals made without the proper investigation and due diligence. Consequently, experienced investors often refuse to even consider film-related investments. …
