Using Cronbach’s alpha, the Parental Efficacy Subscale and all but one subscale of the Parenting Stress Index were found to be reliable with this small sample. Analysis …

The Effects Of Different Shifts On Injury And Illness Rates At A Manufacturing Facility., Angela M. Mattis Jan 2000

The Effects Of Different Shifts On Injury And Illness Rates At A Manufacturing Facility., Angela M. Mattis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study examined the impact of working different shifts on the injury and illness rates at a diesel engine factory. A retrospective study was conducted using injury data from 1995-1999 collected from the test site. The injury rates of the shifts were compared with each other and with other studies. The study showed that there was not a significant increase in the amount of injuries on the first shift as compared to the other two main shifts. This indicates that the off shifts may not necessarily cause an increase in the injury and illness rate at the facility. The results …

The Distribution Of Federal Grants In Appalachia: The Effects Of Race., Steven Ray Gregory Jan 2000

The Distribution Of Federal Grants In Appalachia: The Effects Of Race., Steven Ray Gregory

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

African Americans are an economically and socially oppressed group both currently and historically within the American South and Appalachian region. They experience socioeconomic barriers at local and national levels. Even so, within Appalachian counties, populations with greater percentages of African Americans receive greater per capita federal grant spending. Moreover, southern Appalachian counties including counties in the Black Belt region show the most dramatic increases in federal grants. Still, within Appalachian counties receiving increased federal grants, unemployment rates are not affected. Further, metropolitan counties are not benefitting from increased federal grant spending. Consequently, these counties are experiencing economic growth with little …

Heinrich Von Kleists "Michael Kohlhaas" Und E. L. Doctorows "Ragtime": Ein Vergleich Unter Besonderer Beruecksichtigung Sozialer Verhaeltnisse Und Historischer Parallelen., Sven Kastner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Speech Acts As A Focus Of Variation Studies: Aae Vs. Eae., Brian Jose Jan 2000

Speech Acts As A Focus Of Variation Studies: Aae Vs. Eae., Brian Jose

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research in linguistics, and specifically within the field of applied linguistics, has been concerned with the different ways that speech acts are realized in different languages. This is so that language learners can learn to adequately conform to those norms in the target language. However, much of this research has assumed that all speakers of the relevant languages, such as American English, for example, are homogeneous, that they all perform the given speech acts in the same ways. I argue that this is an erroneous assumption: just as there is phonological variation, for example, between dialects of a language, …

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes Jan 2000

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As part of a larger study examining well-being among older West Virginia residents, male spousal caregivers (n = 30) and their non-caregiving counterparts (n = 99) were compared on self-reports of physical and psychological well-being, and appraisals of social support. Demographic trends suggest the importance of examining the caregiving situation among females, the traditional caregivers, and male caregivers who are growing in numbers. The data revealed few differences between caregivers and non-caregivers, chronological age was not a factor. This suggests that the male and female caregiving experience are not consistent. Given the growing percentage of male caregivers and the demand …

Comparative Assessment Of Bit Geometry And Cutting Parameters., Shiv Kumar Bhuvanapalli Jan 2000

Comparative Assessment Of Bit Geometry And Cutting Parameters., Shiv Kumar Bhuvanapalli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Objectives of this research are to evaluate the performance of cutting tool, having different geometric configurations, in regards to bit – rock interaction and dust generation. When the cutting process takes place, the main objective is to cut bigger blocks of land/ridge rather than small and less fine dust. It is also important to minimize the amount of airborne dust. The ratio of bit spacing to depth of cut, angle of attack and many other bit geometrical factors contribute to the amount of settled and respirable dust production. When rock is cut and two cutting bits are placed adjacently …

The Fracture Analysis And Remaining Life Estimation Of The Avlb Sub-Components., Jeong-Hoon Choi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Armored Vehicle Launch Bridge (AVLB) is subjected to cyclic loading during its launching as well as tank crossing. The cyclic loading causes crack to initiate in critical bridge components, and to propagate. Unless these cracks are detected and repaired before they rapidly grow to reach their critical stage of propagation, the failure of bridge components can occur. According to the Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) from the U.S. Army, three AVLB components, the splice doubler angle, the splice plate, and the bottom chord, are susceptible to fatigue damage. In the present study, the laboratory fatigue tests on the …

Data Points Or Cultural Entities: A Gis-Based Archaeological Predictive Model In A Post-Positivist Framework., Linwood Jesse Rouse Jan 2000

Data Points Or Cultural Entities: A Gis-Based Archaeological Predictive Model In A Post-Positivist Framework., Linwood Jesse Rouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Archaeological predictive models have been used in conjunction with sampling strategies, in large scale archaeological surveys, for over thirty years. During this time, these models have undergone many conceptual and theoretical changes. Archaeological predictive models stemmed from the positivist Processual Archaeology, but the shift from positivism has precipitated the need to reconsider the ideas from which they are based. There is a general trend within the current spectrum of ideologies to support the importance of cultural information in archaeological research. The following research contends that cultural information has not been utilized to its full extent in archaeological models and that …

The Relationships Between Snags And Cavity-Nesting Birds In A Gypsy Moth-Impacted Forest., Christopher Ryan Showalter Jan 2000

The Relationships Between Snags And Cavity-Nesting Birds In A Gypsy Moth-Impacted Forest., Christopher Ryan Showalter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gypsy moth defoliation can result in the death of trees and create snags (standing dead trees), a resource vital to cavity-nesting species. With this in mind, population trends of 11 cavity-nesting birds and their relationship to snags were investigated from 1984 to 1999 in an area that was impacted by gypsy moth defoliation. Data from before a major gypsy moth outbreak (1984-1986), during (1987-1988), and after (1989-1999) enabled inferences about this forest bird community to be made. The combined abundance of the 11 cavity-nesting species examined increased significantly during the years immediately after the outbreak (1989 – 1993) followed by …

Development Of System Parameters For Enhanced Cutting And Finishing Of Handglass Using A Carbon Dioxide Laser., Christopher Edward Thompson Jan 2000

Development Of System Parameters For Enhanced Cutting And Finishing Of Handglass Using A Carbon Dioxide Laser., Christopher Edward Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In handglass manufacturing, a need has been identified for a more efficient method to crack off glassware. Extended cutting and finishing times and high rates of breakage in the glassware hinder current methods. For example, due to the physical nature of thermal cracking, crack-off is not easily controlled and after separation is achieved, further finishing of the glassware is required. Depending on the glass properties and worker skill level, losses due to breakage can be as high as 80 percent in some product lines. The Laser Glass Cutting Machine (LGCM) is a joint project among the National Energy Technology Laboratory …

Hammer And Hand In The Old South: Artisan Workers In Petersburg, Virginia, 1820-1860., L Diane Barnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Petersburg, Virginia presents a unique opportunity to examine the lives of southern artisan workers in the nineteenth century. Ranked as the forty-ninth most industrialized U.S. city in 1860, Petersburg was home to nearly 3,000 skilled white and free black male workers in the antebellum era. Crossed by five railroads, commerce and industry were the backbone of the city's economy. The tobacco factories, iron foundries, cotton textile mills, and smaller workshops attracted skilled workers from Virginia, other parts of the South, northern states, and even Europe. The industrial activity of Petersburg makes it possible to draw comparisons with existing studies of …

Personal Values And Work Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses Working In Hospitals, Marie M. Prothero, Elaine S. Marshall, Donna M. Fosbinder, Leland J. Hendrix

Faculty Publications

Personal values are increasingly recognized as important factors in work environments, including health care systems (Cameron & Whetten, 1995; Covey, Merrill, & Merrill, 1995; Fagermoen, 1997). The personal values of nursing students have been explored (Eddy, Elfrink, Weis, & Schank, 1994; Sivberg & Petersson, 1997) as have those of nurses, in the context of work design (Koerner, 1993 ). Factors of nurses' work satisfaction have also been studied extensively (Avallone & Gibbon, 1998; Brown, Naughton, & Nolan, 1998; Johnston,1997; Kangas, Kee, & McKee-Waddle,1999; Seymour & Buscherhof,1990). However, little is known about the personal values of nurses as they relate to …
