Empowerment Through Dancing?: Perceptions Of Occupational Power And Control Among Female Exotic Dancers, Patricia A. Hernandez Jan 2000

Empowerment Through Dancing?: Perceptions Of Occupational Power And Control Among Female Exotic Dancers, Patricia A. Hernandez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this thesis is to examine female sex workers and issues of power. My investigation focuses specifically on female exotic dancers and whether they perceive power in their work. The question I intend to answer is do exotic dancers see themselves as having power in relation to the men they dance for? Drawing on both feminist theory and women’s experience in the sex industry, I expect to discover whether or not strippers gain a sense of power from their work, whether they feel they have control over the conditions of their work, and how power and control can …

Scaling Back The Ada: How The Sutton V. United Airlines Decision Affects Employees With Bipolar Disorder., Kevin Wiley Jr.

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The Sutton v. United Airlines decision went too far in the Supreme Court’s effort to scale back the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Congress should review the Sutton decision and amend the ADA to consider disabilities as they exist without regard to mitigating measures based on the severity of the illness. To seek protection under the ADA, one must have a discernable disability, and one’s impairment must be diagnosed and disclosed to the employer. Disability, however, was not specifically defined in the ADA, and no agency or regulation has specifically defined disability for the courts to utilize …

Increasing Rural Women's Involvement In Government Decision Making, Teresa Maiolo Jan 2000

Increasing Rural Women's Involvement In Government Decision Making, Teresa Maiolo

Research outputs pre 2011

The purpose of this report was to identify why rural women's involvement in government decision-making is of a low level despite the concerted government action, and to furthermore provide solutions to inform action. The strength of the research presented is that all information is firmly established in the rural women's experiences.

Twenty-one Western Australian rural women leaders were individually interviewed. These women represent the larger rural regions of Western Australia: South West, Great Southern, Goldfields-Esperance, Mid-West, Gascoyne, and Kimberley regions. These women were familiar with the broad systems of government, leadership, information and communication technology, and obviously rural life...

A Generic Approach, Employing Information Systems, For Introducing Manufacturing Information Systems In Sme 'S, Zahoor Ahmed Qurashi Jan 2000

A Generic Approach, Employing Information Systems, For Introducing Manufacturing Information Systems In Sme 'S, Zahoor Ahmed Qurashi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis presents an approach which the small and medium size firms can use in-house to introduce manufacturing information systems. The approach developed is generic and employs information system design and analysis techniques to guide Small and Medium size Enterprises (SME's) from specification of their need, right through to the implementation of an appropriate solution. Although there are various tools and methodologies that are available for large organisations needs, none are available for SME's. Therefore, the approach presented in this thesis provides original and significant improvements on current practice. The approach emphasises the importance of taking a company wide approach …

Evolutionary Multi-Objective Decision Support Systems For Conceptual Design, Dragan Cvetkovic Jan 2000

Evolutionary Multi-Objective Decision Support Systems For Conceptual Design, Dragan Cvetkovic

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In this thesis the problem of conceptual engineering design and the possible use of adaptive search techniques and other machine based methods therein are explored. For the multi-objective optimisation (MOO) within conceptual design problem, genetic algorithms (GA) adapted to MOO are used and various techniques explored: weighted sums, lexicographic order, Pareto method with and without ranking, VEGA-like approaches etc. Large number of runs are performed for findingZ Dth e optimal configuration and setting of the GA parameters. A novel method, weighted Pareto method is introduced and applied to a real-world optimisation problem. Decision support methods within conceptual engineering design framework …

After deposition, by evaporation under vacuum, of Al/Cu/Te, multilayer structures, annealing at 673 K or more for half an hour, under argon flow, allows CuAlTe2 films crystallized in the chalcopyrite structure to be obtained. The optical and electrical properties are interpreted by introducing the influence of impurity foreign phases present in the films. The optical properties are sensitive to the small Al2O3 domains randomly distributed into the CuAlTe2 polycrystalline matrix. The optical band gap is slightly increased (2.35 eV) by the presence of alumina. The conductivity measurements show that a short circuit effect can be induced by a binary Cu2-xTe …

Assessing The Consequences Of Ozone Depletion On Ecosystem Function: Effects Of Ultraviolet-B Radiation On Plant Biomass, Tissue Quality And Litter Decomposition., Walter John Cybulski Jan 2000

Assessing The Consequences Of Ozone Depletion On Ecosystem Function: Effects Of Ultraviolet-B Radiation On Plant Biomass, Tissue Quality And Litter Decomposition., Walter John Cybulski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I investigated if variable levels of UV-B exposure during growth altered plant litter production and quality in ways that indirectly modified decomposition of litter material from ten species including three angiosperm trees, three forbs, three grasses, and one gymnosperm tree. For UV-B effects on litter production, I found that ambient UV-B levels (versus no UV-B) did not affect the aboveground biomass (litter production) of any of three grasses, one of three forbs, and the one angiosperm tree examined. However, it did alter the biomass of the two other forbs by stimulating production in one and reducing it in the other. …

The Roles Of Cognitive Rigidity And Impulsivity In Adolescent Suicide Attempts., Robin Vaughan Eliason Jan 2000

The Roles Of Cognitive Rigidity And Impulsivity In Adolescent Suicide Attempts., Robin Vaughan Eliason

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Suicide is a major health problem for adolescents. It is the sixth leading cause of death for five to 14 year-olds and the first and the third leading cause of death for adolescents 15 to 19 years of age. The purpose of this study was to extend the research on the risk factors of cognitively rigid behavior, impulsive behavior, and depression and to lay groundwork for the validation of cognitively rigid and impulsive personality traits of adolescent suicide attempters. The amount of time between thought and attempt was explored to extend the research on impulsivity. In this three-group design adolescent …

Analysis Of Paramagnetic Point Defects In Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate And Potassium Titanyl Phosphate Crystals., Nelson Yovanny Garces Jan 2000

Analysis Of Paramagnetic Point Defects In Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate And Potassium Titanyl Phosphate Crystals., Nelson Yovanny Garces

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A series of paramagnetic defects have been characterized in KH2 PO4 (KDP) and KTiOPO4 (KTP) using optical absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) techniques. In KDP, one hole-like center and five electronlike centers were investigated. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters were obtained for the holelike center and two electronlike centers. The hole center consists of a hole trapped on an oxygen ion adjacent to a silicon impurity substituting for a phosphorus ion. The electron centers are oxygen vacancies with one trapped electron, i.e., they are (PO3)2− molecular units. Both the hole center and the electron centers can be formed …

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills Jan 2000

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Paradoxical interventions are therapeutic techniques in which the therapist appears to promote the worsening or continuation of the problem rather than its removal. The objective of this treatment is to lessen or eliminate the problematic behavior through the unusual means of encouraging it. Only two previous studies have empirically evaluated these techniques with resistant and defiant youths; those results suggested that paradoxical interventions may be effective with severely conduct-disordered adolescents. This study applied the techniques of symptom scheduling and restraining with three conduct-disordered adolescents residing in a therapeutic group home. The experimental design was a nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants; …

Cognitive -Affective, Behavioral, And Physiological Response In Injury Among Competitive Athletes., R Renee Newcomer Jan 2000

Cognitive -Affective, Behavioral, And Physiological Response In Injury Among Competitive Athletes., R Renee Newcomer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Injured athletes' psychological distress has been explored using a stress-response paradigm and through a variety of research methodologies. Despite growing interest in psychophysiological stress-response research (Gatchel, 1997), physiological features of psychological distress have not yet been explored among injured athletes (Flint, 1998). Psychological distress has been associated with delayed healing among other medical populations (Kiecolt-Glaser, Page, Marucha, MacCallum, & Glaser, 1998), and physiological features of distress have lead to increased reports of a variety of health-related problems (Baum, Gatchel, & Krantz, 1997). The present research consists of two studies designed to validate preliminary reports and advance current knowledge regarding the …

The Law And Order Presidency., Willard Mark Oliver Jan 2000

The Law And Order Presidency., Willard Mark Oliver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The theory of presidential influence over public opinion is used to predict the impact of presidential time and attention focused on crime on the public's concern for crime as the “most important problem facing the country.” The more attention presidents give to the issue of crime, the more concerned the public becomes with crime. The study addresses the assumptions of the hypothesis by first assessing the history of presidential involvement in crime control policy; second, by delineating reasons why presidents have become involved in such policies; and, finally, by articulating the means presidents have available in order to engage in …

Stylistic Evolution Of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection Of New Orleans And West Africa., David J. Schmalenberger Jan 2000

Stylistic Evolution Of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection Of New Orleans And West Africa., David J. Schmalenberger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940's that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments …

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida Jan 2000

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Finite element (FE) models of the human head have been used extensively to assess engineering response parameters (pressure, shear strain, etc.) that constitute the basis of various injury criteria including the Head Injury Criterion (HIC). There is a wide range of brain material properties reported in the literature, and linear elastic models are frequently used for the brain tissue which is viscoelastic in nature. The uncertainty around the properties of brain tissue affects the perceived importance of those response parameters under consideration. In this research, the effect on head injury criteria of five reported viscoelastic brain models and their linear …
