The Process Of Resilience, Denise R. Vikturek Oct 2000

The Process Of Resilience, Denise R. Vikturek

Theses and Graduate Projects

Resilience is the overcoming of some risk factor resulting in positive adaptation. Respondents from a mental health center and a medical institution who are involved in individual and family therapies completed a quantitative survey identifying specific traits, relationships and experiences impacting an individual's adaptation to adversity. The hypothesis was that if practitioners can identify these specifics they can help clients learn to recognize and seek out such traits, relationships, and experiences. The implication for practice is that through such teaching practitioners can increase the likelihood of client positive adaptation to adverse situations.

Does A Rigid Body Limit Maneuverability?, Jeffrey A. Walker Phd Oct 2000

Does A Rigid Body Limit Maneuverability?, Jeffrey A. Walker Phd

Faculty Publications

Whether a rigid body limits maneuverability depends on how maneuverability is defined. By the current definition, the minimum radius of the turn, a rigid-bodied, spotted boxfish Ostracion meleagris approaches maximum maneuverability, i.e. it can spin around with minimum turning radii near zero. The radius of the minimum space required to turn is an alternative measure of maneuverability. By this definition, O. meleagris is not very maneuverable. The observed space required by O. meleagris to turn is slightly greater than its theoretical minimum but much greater than that of highly flexible fish. Agility, the rate of turning, is related to maneuverability. …

Electroporation Device And Method, Richard Heller, Richard Gilbert, Mark Jaroszeski Oct 2000

Electroporation Device And Method, Richard Heller, Richard Gilbert, Mark Jaroszeski

USF Patents

A device for manipulating a molecule in vivo relative to a target tissue in three dimensions includes a support and at least one member affixed to and extending away from the support. The member has at least two discrete and separately activatable electrodes. The electrodes are configured to establish a first electromagnetic field between selected electrodes sufficient to manipulate a molecule relative to a target tissue. The electrodes are further configured to establish a second, typically higher-level, electromagnetic field sufficient to cause transient permeability of a cell membrane within the target tissue. A third electromagnetic field may also be applied …

Metal And Wood Composite Framing Members For Residential And Light Commercial Construction (Div A), Armin Rudd Oct 2000

Metal And Wood Composite Framing Members For Residential And Light Commercial Construction (Div A), Armin Rudd

UCF Patents

Metal and wood composites are used to create framing members (studs and tracks, joists and bands, rafters, headers and the like.) for lightweight construction. Metal is utilized for its high strength, resistance to rot insects, cost stability, and potentially lower cost through recycling. Metal that can be used includes roll formed steel approximately 18-22 gauge. Wood is used primarily for its lower thermal conductivity and availability. The metal components form the primary structure while wood either solid or other engineered wood, provides some structure and a thermal break. The invention connects J-shaped or triangular shaped metal forms to wood sections. …
