Remote Sensing Of Forest Damage In The Czech Republic Using Hyperspectral Methods, Petya K. Entcheva Jan 2000

Remote Sensing Of Forest Damage In The Czech Republic Using Hyperspectral Methods, Petya K. Entcheva

Doctoral Dissertations

The current study assesses the potential of hyperspectral data for monitoring the initial stages of damage in Norway spruce forests characterized by subtle changes in foliar chlorophyll and chemistry. Both field and airborne high spectral resolution reflectance measurements were obtained for selected study sites in the Krusne hory, Czech Republic.

High spectral resolution airborne canopy data and field foliar samples were acquired simultaneously in August 1998 for a total of 51 study sites within the Krusne hory. The sites were selected to represent a full range of damage conditions in even-aged Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) stands located between …

Tuned In: Television And The Teaching Of Writing, Bronwyn Thomas Williams

Doctoral Dissertations

College writing teachers often consider the reading and writing experiences students have had in elementary and high school classes as their only relevant discursive influences. When they do so they risk ignoring what is perhaps the most powerful and ubiquitous form of public discourse and communication in our society: television. This dissertation explores how the pervasive discourse of popular culture on television influences the ways in which incoming college students perceive and engage in writing and reading when they enter a first-year composition course. Through interviews with students and observations of them watching television, I have studied the skills students …

Conservation And Ecology Of Fringing Salt Marshes Along The Southern Maine/New Hampshire Coast, Pamela Ann Morgan Jan 2000

Conservation And Ecology Of Fringing Salt Marshes Along The Southern Maine/New Hampshire Coast, Pamela Ann Morgan

Doctoral Dissertations

The small, fringing salt marshes that line the edges of estuaries in southern Maine and New Hampshire were the focus of this research. Although larger meadow marshes in New England have been studied extensively, little is known about the ecology of fringing marshes. Not only are fringing marshes much more numerous than meadow marshes in northern New England, they are often restored or created as mitigation for marsh impacts. Five ecological functions (primary production, soil organic matter accumulation, sediment trapping and binding, wave dampening and maintenance of plant diversity) were compared in meadow marsh and fringing marsh sites, and sometimes …

Number, Please: New Hampshire Telephone Operators In The Predial Era, 1877--1973, Judith N. Moyer Jan 2000

Number, Please: New Hampshire Telephone Operators In The Predial Era, 1877--1973, Judith N. Moyer

Doctoral Dissertations

The predial telephone era in New Hampshire stretched from about 1877 to 1973. This dissertation examines predial telephone operating in the state as a category of women's work. While growing out of and responding to technical invention and development, telephone operating had deep roots in women's social roles; gender defined occupational options, the work environment, the rules of employment, wages, and expectations. As the telephone system developed, differences between telephone operating in large and small exchanges developed; the urban operator eventually worked under conditions of traffic volume, supervision, and control that the rural operator often did not. To uncover the …

Mathematics And Socio -Cultural Behavior: A Case Study Of The Enculturation Of A New Mathematician, Timothy Byron Gutmann Jan 2000

Mathematics And Socio -Cultural Behavior: A Case Study Of The Enculturation Of A New Mathematician, Timothy Byron Gutmann

Doctoral Dissertations

Research has shown that mathematics as we know it is a product of the socio-cultural climate in which it was developed. This research attempts to address the related question of how being involved in mathematics influences the socio-cultural lives of mathematicians. A new Ph.D. mathematician hired in his first faculty position was observed for a period of 13 weeks, most during his first semester. Analysis of this long-term, in depth case study followed ethnographic methods and drew on theories of rites of passage, organizational socialization, self-identity, and evolution. The role of mathematics in the departmental culture and in the newcomer's …

Disturbance Indicators For Time Series Reconstruction And Marine Ecosystem Health Impact Assessment, Benjamin Harrison Sherman Jan 2000

Disturbance Indicators For Time Series Reconstruction And Marine Ecosystem Health Impact Assessment, Benjamin Harrison Sherman

Doctoral Dissertations

A systematic reconstruction of Multiple Marine Ecological Disturbances (MMEDs) involving disease occurrence, morbidity and mortality events has been undertaken so that a taxonomy of globally distributed marine disturbance types can be better quantified and common forcing factors identified. Combined disturbance data include indices of morbidity, mortality and disease events affecting humans, marine invertebrates, flora and wildlife populations. In the search for the best disturbance indicators of ecosystem change, the unifying solution for joining data from disparate fields is to organize data into space/time/topic hierarchies that permit convergence of data due to shared and appropriate scaling. The scale of the data …

Impacts Of Wildlife Viewing: A Case Study Of Dixville Notch Wildlife Viewing Area, Judith Kay Anderson Silverberg Jan 2000

Impacts Of Wildlife Viewing: A Case Study Of Dixville Notch Wildlife Viewing Area, Judith Kay Anderson Silverberg

Doctoral Dissertations

Major objectives of this study were to examine the motivations, knowledge level and attitudes of wildlife viewers as well as the response of moose to observation and other human caused stimuli at a designated wildlife viewing site. Moose and other wildlife are attracted to areas where road salt runoffs and pools in low areas around culverts and ditches creating wildlife viewing opportunities.

This study examined whether moose behaviors such as visitation time and rate of use of the salt lick changed from preconstruction (1996) of a wildlife blind to wildlife viewing establishment (1999). Trailmaster monitors strategically located on trails entering …

Pre-Surgical Evaluation For Epilepsy Surgery, David W. Loring, Kimford J. Meador Jan 2000

Pre-Surgical Evaluation For Epilepsy Surgery, David W. Loring, Kimford J. Meador

Neurosciences

Neuropsychological testing may reflect subtle structural changes that may not be readily apparent with neuroimaging studies, and physiologic disruption of normal neural function secondary to epileptic activity. Neuropsychological testing is used during the pre-operative evaluation for epilepsy surgery to assess functional brain status, which, in turn, provides important information on the risks for post-operative neruopsychological deficits and also provides confirmatory evidence of seizure onset laterality in patients whose seizures originate in temporal lobes. This review will focus primarily on the pre-operative neuropsychological of candidates for temporal lobectomy surgery since they represent the majority of individuals undergoing ablative epilepsy surgery, and …

Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Sonia A. Khan Jan 2000

Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Sonia A. Khan

Neurosciences

Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute, or more often, a subacutely evolving paralytic disease of unestablished etiology. The condition is often designated as the Landy-Guillain-Strohl syndrome in recognition of the description provided by Landy in 1859 and again in 1916 by Guillain, Barre and Strohl. The pathogenesis and specific therapy in this condition remains imperfectly defined. The diagnosis is usually clinical with supportive laboratory tests. In this syllabus, we review the diagnostic criteria in Guillain-Barre syndrome and current therapies in the acute management followed by presentation of the acute management protocol used in the Neurosciences Department at the Riyadh Armed Forces …

A Pilot Study Of The Relationship Between Down’S Syndrome And Hearing Loss, Hoda A. Kattan, Ribha F. Jarrar, Ziad Z. Mohasin

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities in children with Down’s syndrome. The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence and types of hearing loss in Down’s syndrome patients. METHODS: Twenty-six subjects with Down’s syndrome aged between 2 and 17 year old were evaluated during the year 1998, referred randomly by the Pediatric Department and the Down’s Syndrome Centre. Screening audiological procedures were used to evaluate these patients, which include behavioral audiometry, play and pure tone audiometry, tympanometry and ABR, which is the measurement of the activity of the auditory pathway structures from the distal …

Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy With Papillodema And Response To Immunoglobulins., Said A. El-Zunni, Parampalli S. Prakash, Khalil M. Saitti, Mohammed A. El-Zunni

Neurosciences

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is considered as a chronic form of Guillain-Barre syndrome differing from it in response to steroids, course and prognosis. Papillodema although rare is not an uncommon feature. Here we report a case of florid papillodema in a patient of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, discuss the underlying mechanisms in relation to cerebrospinal fluid pressure and protein content and response to intravenous immunoglobulins.
