Effective Transportation Demand Management: The Results Of Combining Parking Pricing, Transit Incentives, And Transportation Management In A Commercial District Of Portland, Oregon, Martha J. Bianco
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The Lloyd District is a high-density commercial and residential district located a short distance from downtown Portland, Oregon. Parking and transportation problems in the District have been a source of increasing contention for nearly a decade. As a result. in September of 1997. the City of Portland implemented a Lloyd District Partnership Plan, which consists of a number of elements aimed at curbing SOY use for the commute to and from the District. This plan included parking pricing in the form of meters, w'here on-street parking had previously been free: discounted transit passes: and other transportation demand management (TOM) strategies. …

Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak
Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We consider a covolume method for a system of first order PDEs resulting from the mixed formulation of the variable-coefficient-matrix Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. The system may be used to represent the Darcy law and the mass conservation law in anisotropic porous media flow. The velocity and pressure are approximated by the lowest order Raviart-Thomas space on rectangles. The method was introduced by Russell [Rigorous Block- centered Discretizations on Irregular Grids: Improved Simulation of Complex Reservoir Systems, Reservoir Simulation Research Corporation, Denver, CO, 1995] as a control-volume mixed method and has been extensively tested by Jones [A …

There was a lack of programming directed toward students in the Chicago graphic design community. A conference organized specifically for students would allow them to benefit from the resources that the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts offers. It would also help to create a community of student graphic designers which could gain knowledge and insight from each other. I decided to organize a student conference at Northern Illinois University. My past experiences at graphic design conferences along with my position of student representative on the AIGA Chicago board and the research I conducted on methods of …

Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers
Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers
Educational Studies Dissertations
This Portraits of Leadership research focuses on using children's artwork to study girls' perceptions of leadership. 244 school age children were asked to draw their image of a leader and to write descriptions of why they chose this person as a leader. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among gender, age, and creativity and choice of leader in drawing and written descriptions. Results indicate that, though both girls and boys chose males as leaders more often than females, girls' portraits conformed to the literature regarding gender roles and traditional leadership styles. Implications are suggested for educational …

Teaching For The Aesthetic Experience, Margaret G. Black
Educational Studies Dissertations
This study answered the question, "How to teach for the Aesthetic Experience in the visual arts?" Six women art educators served as study participants. The researcher identified five components of aesthetic experience: perception, cognition, imagination, emotion, and discovery. Informed by theories of conversational teaching methods, aesthetic development, and adult development, the researcher designed and executed a qualitative case study that incorporated all five components. Art viewing, art making, and evaluative response were the tools used in the study to foster aesthetic understanding.

Community Service Learning: Pursuing Jewish Ideals Of Compassion And Justice, Joel Westheimer
Community Service Learning: Pursuing Jewish Ideals Of Compassion And Justice, Joel Westheimer
Special Topics, General
Service learning involves community service activities tied to the academic curriculum. It has strong roots in the progressive philosophy of turn-of-the-century educators like John Dewey, Harold Rugg, and William Kilpatrick, but its Widespread popularity is a contemporary phenomenon. A recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics reveals that 83 percent of high schools currently offer community service opportunities (compared with 27 percent in 1984). School-based service learning is among the fastest growing and popular education reforms of the past three decades. Jewish educators have seen similar

Designing Teacher Education Course Syllabi That Integrate Service-Learning, Michael Rowls, Kevin J. Swick
Syllabi
Sample service-learning in teacher education course syllabi are analyzed in relation to important variables impacting the value and use of this pedagogy in teacher education courses and experiences. Results of the analysis – as interrelated with the findings of other service-learning research – point to possible means for strengthening the design and uses of service-learning in teacher education. Guidelines for strengthening service-learning within teacher education courses are presented and discussed.

The previous section reviewed the results of a survey that asked African American citizens of Nebraska their opinions on several issues and concerns facing Nebraska's AfricanAmerican community. This section uses these results to develop actions and recommendations in several areas: Youth Issues, Government Issues, Jobs and Economic Development, Criminal Justice, and Health. Because some of these areas overlap, actions and recommendations suggested for one area may also apply to another area.

Fages' Theorem And Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Esta Erdem, Vladimir Lifschitz
Fages' Theorem And Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Esta Erdem, Vladimir Lifschitz
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
We generalize a theorem by François Fages that describes the relationship between the completion semantics and the answer set semantics for logic programs with negotiation as failure. The study of this relationship is important in connection with the emergence of answer set programming. Whenever the two semantics are equivalent, answer sets can be computed by a satisfiability solver, and the use of answer set solvers such as SMODELS and DLV is unnecessary. A logic programming representation of the blocks world due to Ilkka Niemelä is discussed as an example.
