Listening To The Voices Of The Land: Stories Of Prince Edward Island Organic Farmers Sowing Hope In The Struggle For Survival, Kara L. Griffin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Changes within agriculture towards an industrialized approach to farming have had detrimental effects on people, communities, and the environment. There is a need for methods of farming that preserve and protect the natural and social ecology. In this thesis, I explored the experiences and stories of a small group of PEI organic farmers, who have an important role in preserving the Island's natural and social ecology. Informed mainly by the narrative theory of Rappaport (1995), I conducted qualitative interviews with seven farmers, in an effort to hear their stories as organic farmers on PEI and leam from their experiences. While …

Wheel Running, Feeding, And Body Weight In Adult Male Rats: Generalizations To Adult Females And Younger Animals, Veronica Marie Afonso

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

For adult male rats, initial access to a running wheel results in a pronounced suppression of feeding with a subsequent disruption of weight gain, but results with female and younger rats are not as clear. The present experiments demonstrated that age may be a confounding factor in the conflicting reports. The effects of ad lib wheel access on feeding and body weight were investigated in adult male, adult female, and weanling male rats using consistent procedures and recording data daily. For adult males and females, wheel access initially suppressed feeding and reduced weight relative to sedentary controls. These effects were …

Understanding Equity And Oppression From A Different Perspective: Students Evaluate Their Education, Kevin Black

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In 1993, the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training (MET) created a draft document on the topic of antiracism and ethnocultural equity in school boards. This document contained guidelines for anti-oppression policy and practice within schools. Many stakeholders within the education system and society debate whether or not an education for equity is being provided in schools. I chose to respond to this debate by listening to the voices of an unheard stakeholder group: students. Two methods of data collection, questionnaires and focus groups, were utilized in my study. Seventy-one students participated in the questionnaire section, and six students further …

Winning The War, Winning The Peace: The Image Of The 'Indian' In English-Canada, 1930-1948, Robert Scott Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines the impact of the Second World War on the image of the 'Indian' prevalent in English-Canada between 1930 and 1948. Traditionally, historical studies have assumed that the war formed a watershed in Canadian social, cultural and Aboriginal history: marking the end of the 'era of irrelevance' for Aboriginal people and creating a paradigm-shift in feelings about 'racial' tolerance and human rights. This study explores the shift in English-Canadian images of the 'Indian' from 1930 to 1948, as a way of testing the prevailing interpretation of the war as a major historical pivot in Canadian cultural constructions of …

Large stone asphalt mixtures (LSAM) are mixtures that contains maximum aggregate sizes between 25 and 63 mm. LSAMs are used to improve the mixtures' resistance to rutting and also improve the durability of pavements. However, due to historical reasons, LSAM has been rarely used in pavement constructions. The objective of this study was to determine the fundamental engineering properties of LSAM for potential use in Louisiana and to conduct numerical simulations of pavements that contain LSAMs. The scope of this evaluation included two types LSAMs: an open-graded and a dense-graded 37.5-mm Superpave mix, and three types of asphalt binders: an …

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston Jan 2000

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effect of increasing phytase coefficient of variation (CV) in chick diets, and to determine the effect of phytase addition on nutrient availability in diets for swine and poultry. The first experiment (EXP) simulated varying mix uniformity of phytase by alternately providing two diets with two different concentrations of microbial phytase (FTU). Increasing phytase CV had little effect on growth performance, whereas bone ash and breaking strength and Ca and P retention and excretion decreased only at the most extreme CV. These data suggest that a phytase CV of between 34 and …

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a procedure, which can only consider relative priorities as estimated by decision-makers. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is a data-oriented approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a group of entities referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs). This research work integrates and combines positive aspects of AHP's estimated qualitative data and DEA's quantitative data. This combination is accomplished by specifying two variants of the DEA methodology for selection of the best DMU. Initially the priority weights of AHP are integrated with the DEA methodology to provide results that are logic based. Next, …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul Jan 2000

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994, a sweet potato sample showing leaf curl symptoms was collected from the field in Louisiana. When graft-inoculated, Ipomoea setosa reacted with mild upward leaf curling while I. aquatica reacted with a bright yellow mottle. The putative virus was transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, and it was designated the United States isolate of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV-US). Four independent Southern blot hybridizations using the DNA-A of different begomoviruses as probes confirmed the presence of begomovirus-like DNA in the infected plants. Fibrillar inclusions and granular aggregates of geminivirus-like particles were observed in the …

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe Jan 2000

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Obesity, a recognized health problem, is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. Removal of adrenal steroids by adrenalectomy (ADX) slows the development of obesity. Leptin decreases food intake through effects initiated by activation of the JAK-STAT pathway. Defects in leptin signaling lead to obesity, which is associated with hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance. In chapter 4, leptin induces phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) mRNA expression and increases glucose production in hepatocytes from lean but not obese Zucker rats. This suggests that hyperleptinemia in obesity causes hyperglycemia. In chapter 5, ADX decreased the levels of PEPCK mRNA, and increased leptin receptor mRNA expression …

Structure Determination Of Derivatized Disaccharides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Modeling., Sanford Louis Mendonca Jan 2000

Structure Determination Of Derivatized Disaccharides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Modeling., Sanford Louis Mendonca

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research entails the synthesis of derivatized disaccharides, mass spectrometry studies for structural elucidation of the synthetic disaccharides and molecular modeling of the native and derivatized disaccharides. Peralkylated (methyl to pentyl), peresterifed and tert-butyl-dimethyl silylated linkage isomeric glucose-glucose disaccharides were synthesized to eventually be used in mass spectrometry studies. In this dissertation, mass spectrometry was used to examine anomeric pair discrimination of two sets of peralkylated (methyl to pentyl) disaccharides (maltose/cellobiose and isomaltose/gentiobiose). This was carried out by electrospray ionization and collision experiments on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. In addition, effects of alkyl substitution on cleavage of the glycosidic …

Attentional And Judgement Biases Associated With Body Weight Preoccupation In Children And Adolescents., Stephanie Lynn Muller Jan 2000

Attentional And Judgement Biases Associated With Body Weight Preoccupation In Children And Adolescents., Stephanie Lynn Muller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Most cognitive behavioral theories of the eating disorders emphasize the influences of beliefs and attitudes related to body weight and shape on the development and maintenance of pathological eating and weight control behaviors. Recent research has found support for the theories and specifically for the presence of attentional, judgement, and memory biases in individuals diagnosed with eating disorders as well as women who are preoccupied with body weight (Williamson, Muller, Reas, & Thaw, 1999). This research has focused almost without exception on adult populations. However, eating disorders as well as preoccupation with body size and shape have increased in preadolescent …

Host And Parasite Interactions Among Three Symbionts: Pocket Gophers, Chewing Lice, And Endosymbiotic Bacteria., David Lee Reed

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the patterns of cophylogeny documented between pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) and their ectoparasitic chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae). The first two chapters investigate the mechanisms that reinforce cospeciation in this system. Chapter one examines whether mammalian hair diameter is a resource tracked by chewing lice, and thus reinforces the patterns of cospeciation. I found that hair diameter of pocket gophers is correlated with gopher body size and the body size of the ectoparasitic chewing lice. Hair diameter also is correlated with size of the rostral groove, which chewing lice use to grasp hair shafts of pocket gophers. In …

Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman Jan 2000

Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although little empirical evidence supporting various instructional strategies for teaching reading comprehension exists, many educators utilize particular strategies assuming their effectiveness. Because difficulties with comprehension are intensified as students reach the intermediate grades, it is necessary that middle school educators instruct using strategies empirically supported through research. This mixed-method study examined the effectiveness of the Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (Stauffer, 1969), the PreP technique (Langer, 1981), and graphic organizers (Barron, 1969), three popular strategies among middle school teachers. Six teachers participated in the two-group design, pretest/posttest study; over a seven-week period, three of the teachers instructed their sixth-grade students using lessons …
