Effects Of Garlic On Aerobic Performance, Deni̇z İnal İnce, Gül Ti̇ryaki̇ Sönmez, Mustafa Levent İnce

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The effects of the administration of a single dose of garlic on the aerobic performance of college endurance athletes were investigated in this study. Ten trained male athletes participated voluntarily in this study. A 900-mg dose of dried garlic powder or placebo was administered randomly in a double-blind cross-over fashion. Five hours after ingestion of the tablets, the subjects underwent an incremental treadmill running test according to the Bruce protocol until subjective exhaustion. During the test, blood pressure and heart rate were monitored at 3 min intervals. After a one-week wash out period, the subjects were crossed over and the …

Biological Dosimetry Following X-Ray Irradiation, Münevver Coşkun, Asli Top, Tuncay Orta Jan 2000

Biological Dosimetry Following X-Ray Irradiation, Münevver Coşkun, Asli Top, Tuncay Orta

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Control radiation dose-response curves are necessary in evaluating the absorbed radiation dose of similar radiation quality following radiation accidents or in monitoring the health of both the public and radiation workers. Each biological dosimetry laboratory should establish its own control dose-response data. In this study our aim was to establish control curves for 200 kVp X-rays in our laboratory in order to estimate absorbed radiation doses following exposures. Blood samples from healthy individuals with no radiation working history were irradiated in heparinized tubes at 10 different doses 0.10-5.00 Gy. Cells from irradiated whole blood were incubated in culture containing phytohemagglutinin …

Results Of Acute Cerebral Anoxia In Adults: Is It A Reversal Sign?, Nai̇l Bulakbaşi, Yüksel Pabuşçu, H. Kemal Kurtaran, Cem Tayfun, Mustafa Taşar, Taner Üçöz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the results of acute cerebral anoxia in adults as a reversal sign. Methods: We retrospectively examined the CT and MR images of 9 patients in a vegetative state due to acute prolonged anoxia. Each of them had at least one MRI and 4 CT exams 6-12 hours, 10-14 days, 6-8 months and 1 year after the anoxic event. The degree of the cerebral atrophy and the mean density values of cerebral white matter were measured and calculated to demonstrate quantitative changes over time. Results: We detected a diffuse density decrease of …

Antiphospholipid Autoantibodies In Depressive Disorders, Nazan Aydin, Esi̇n Aktaş, Ali̇ Çayköylü, İsmet Kirpinar, R. Ali̇ Sari Jan 2000

Antiphospholipid Autoantibodies In Depressive Disorders, Nazan Aydin, Esi̇n Aktaş, Ali̇ Çayköylü, İsmet Kirpinar, R. Ali̇ Sari

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Higher titers of autoantibodies have been reported in recent studies of depressed patients. In an attempt to investigate the presence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies in patients with depression, sera from both patients and healthy controls were tested for immunoglobulin G and M anticardiolipin and antiphosphatidylserine autoantibodies. We tested positive sera for antiphosphatidylserine (APSA) and anticardi- olipin autoantibody (ACA) in 10 dysthymic, 19 major depressive, and 20 healthy subjects. Tests for ACA-IgM were found to be positive in 1 of the dysthymic patients, in 1 of the major depressives and 1 member of the control group. Positive ACA-IgG was found in 1 …

The E-Landscape: An Unexplored Goldmine Of The New Millennium, Thow Yick Liang Jan 2000

The E-Landscape: An Unexplored Goldmine Of The New Millennium, Thow Yick Liang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Internet is an intangible cyberworld created by the human mind. Exploring and exploiting this e-landscape requires a totally redefined mindset. The fact that it exists in the mental realm also makes it a nonlinear system. In this respect, understanding both intangible and nonlinear dynamics is a requisite to the proper exploitation of e-commerce. The e-landscape is a new edge of chaos where order and disorder co-exist. It could be a goldmine for those who swiftly recognize structure in this highly disordered territory. The tremendous number of opportunities and uncertainties embedded in the submerged portion of this iceberg are still …
