Automated Systematic Testing For Constraint-Based Interactive Services, Patrice Godefroid, Lalita Jategaonkar Jagadeesan, Radha Jagadeesan, Konstantin Laufer Nov 2000

Automated Systematic Testing For Constraint-Based Interactive Services, Patrice Godefroid, Lalita Jategaonkar Jagadeesan, Radha Jagadeesan, Konstantin Laufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Constraint-based languages can express in a concise way the complex logic of a new generation of interactive services for applications such as banking or stock trading, that must support multiple types of interfaces for accessing the same data. These include automatic speech-recognition interfaces where inputs may be provided in any order by users of the service. We study in this paper how to systematically test event-driven applications developed using such languages. We show how such applications can be tested automatically, without the need for any manually-written test cases, and effi- ciently, by taking advantage of their capability of taking unordered …

Judges, Juries, And Patent Cases - An Emprical Peek Inside The Black Box, Kimberly A. Moore Nov 2000

Judges, Juries, And Patent Cases - An Emprical Peek Inside The Black Box, Kimberly A. Moore

Michigan Law Review

The frequency with which juries participate in patent litigation has skyrocketed recently. At the same time, there is a popular perception that the increasing complexity of technology being patented (especially in the electronic, computer software, biological and chemical fields) has made patent trials extremely difficult for lay juries to understand. These developments have sparked extensive scholarly debate and increasing skepticism regarding the role of juries in patent cases. Juries have participated in some aspects of patent litigation since the enactment of the first patent statute in 1790, which provided for "such damages as shall be assessed by a jury." The …

How To Set Up A Mediterranean Fruit Fly Community Baiting Scheme, Sonya Broughton Nov 2000

How To Set Up A Mediterranean Fruit Fly Community Baiting Scheme, Sonya Broughton

Biosecurity published reports

Second edition.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) is one of the most serious economic pests, infesting over 300 fruit and vegetable species worldwide. Medfly is thought to originate from Africa and is a pest in many countries including North America, Central America, South Africa, Europe and Australia. In Australia, Medfly is present only in Western Australia where it is considered to be naturalised. Although Medfly are occasionally detected in eastern Australia, these outbreaks are eradicated at considerable expense by local agricultural departments.

For Western Australia, Medfly poses a serious threat to backyard and commercial fruit production, and restricts access to …

Guidelines For The Administration Of Oral Examinations, Mohammed M. Jan, Amira R. Al-Buhairi

Saudi Medical Journal

Practical oral examinations are considered an important and often a difficult part of medical school examinations. They represent an accurate and direct mean of assessing student9s interaction with patients and their clinical and technical skills. This paper reviews an outline for the administration of oral examinations. The review is based on the medical literature detailed discussions with many senior examiners from different medical systems, and the author9s personal experience. In summary, although examiner9s judgment is crucial, some general rules remain important for fair and consistent evaluation of students. First, examiner9s attitudes should be as friendly as possible with an objective …

Factors Affecting Academic Performance Of Students In A Private College, Aw Seng Hong Nov 2000

Factors Affecting Academic Performance Of Students In A Private College, Aw Seng Hong

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study investigates the relationships between socio-demographic and behavioral factors and academic performance of students at pre-university level in a private college. The subjects for this study are students pursuing Cambridge 'A' Level and South Australian Matriculation (SAM) courses at the college. The findings of this study show that past academic achievement (SPM aggregate) is the most important factor determining the performance at pre-university level. Those who obtained good SPM results tend to excel at pre-university level. Examination results also vary widely according to the socio-demographic characteristics of the students. Children of highly educated parents tend to perform better in …

Hop Integrity In Computer Networks, Mohamed G. Gouda, E.N. Elnozahy, Chin-Tser Huang, Tommy M. Mcguire Nov 2000

Hop Integrity In Computer Networks, Mohamed G. Gouda, E.N. Elnozahy, Chin-Tser Huang, Tommy M. Mcguire

Faculty Publications

A computer network is said to provide hop integrity iff when any router p in the network receives a message m supposedly from an adjacent router q, then p can check that m was indeed sent by q, was not modified after it was sent, and was not a replay of an old message sent from q to p. We describe three protocols that can be added to the routers in a computer network so that the network can provide hop integrity. These three protocols are a secret exchange protocol, a weak integrity protocol, and a strong integrity protocol. All …

A Family Of Developmentally Excised Dna Elements In Tetrahymena Is Under Selective Pressure To Maintain An Open Reading Frame Encoding An Integrase-Like Protein, Jill A. Gershan, Kathleen M. Karrer Nov 2000

A Family Of Developmentally Excised Dna Elements In Tetrahymena Is Under Selective Pressure To Maintain An Open Reading Frame Encoding An Integrase-Like Protein, Jill A. Gershan, Kathleen M. Karrer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Tlr1 is a member of a family of ~20-30 DNA elements that undergo developmentally regulated excision during formation of the macronucleus in the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena. Analysis of sequence internal to the right boundary of Tlr1 revealed the presence of a 2 kb open reading frame (ORF) encoding a deduced protein with similarity to retrotransposon integrases. The ORFs of five unique clones were sequenced. The ORFs have 98% sequence conservation and align without frameshifts, although one has an additional trinucleotide at codon 561. Nucleotide changes among the five clones are highly non-random with respect to the position in the …
