The Infall Region Of Abell 576: Independent Mass And Light Profiles, Kenneth Rines, Margaret J. Geller, Antonaldo Diaferio, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary A. Wegner Nov 2000

The Infall Region Of Abell 576: Independent Mass And Light Profiles, Kenneth Rines, Margaret J. Geller, Antonaldo Diaferio, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary A. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We describe observations of the nearby (cz = 11,487 km s-1) cluster of galaxies Abell 576 beyond the virial radius and into the infall region where galaxies are on their first or second pass through the cluster. Using 1057 redshifts, we use the infall pattern in redshift space to determine the mass profile of A576 to a radius of ~4 h-1 Mpc. This mass estimation technique makes no assumptions about the equilibrium state of the cluster. Within ~1 h-1 Mpc, the mass profile we derive exceeds that determined from X-ray observations by a factor of …

Emotion And Group Cohesion In Productive Exchange, Edward J. Lawler, Shane R. Thye, Jeongkoo Yoon Nov 2000

Emotion And Group Cohesion In Productive Exchange, Edward J. Lawler, Shane R. Thye, Jeongkoo Yoon

Faculty Publications

This study refines and experimentally tests a theory of relational cohesion that explains how and when actors become committed to one another in the context of multiactor exchange. The theory asserts that frequent social exchange results in (1) positive emotions that solidify and strengthen the person-to-group bond and (2) uncertainty reduction that renders the focal group more salient in relation to others. These two mechanisms produce a sense of psychological group formation and ultimately increase observable acts of commitment. In a “productive exchange” setting, three actors negotiate a joint venture that requires the assent of all members. The exchanges featured …

Could Somebody Call A Doctor--On-Call Physicians And The Duty To Treat, Jane Drummond Nov 2000

Could Somebody Call A Doctor--On-Call Physicians And The Duty To Treat, Jane Drummond

Missouri Law Review

The law of negligence imposes few affirmative duties on actors in society. In the medical profession specifically, negligence law traditionally contains no requirement that a physician provide medical treatment to those in need absent an existing relationship between the doctor and patient. Yet there has long been the sense that doctors owe a higher duty to the public, and courts are finding ways to redefine the doctor-patient relationship to allow plaintiffs greater access to claims for a physician’s failure to render care. In Millard v. Corrado, the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Easter District of Missouri provides plaintiffs with …

Biomechanics And Energetics In Aquatic And Semiaquatic Mammals: Platypus To Whale, Frank E. Fish Nov 2000

Biomechanics And Energetics In Aquatic And Semiaquatic Mammals: Platypus To Whale, Frank E. Fish

Biology Faculty Publications

A variety of mammalian lineages have secondarily invaded the water. To locomote and thermoregulate in the aqueous medium, mammals developed a range of morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations. A distinct difference in the suite of adaptations, which affects energetics, is apparent between semiaquatic and fully aquatic mammals. Semiaquatic mammals swim by paddling, which is inefficient compared to the use of oscillating hydrofoils of aquatic mammals. Semiaquatic mammals swim at the water surface and experience a greater resistive force augmented by wave drag than submerged aquatic mammals. A dense, nonwettable fur insulates semiaquatic mammals, whereas aquatic mammals use a layer of …

Mössbauer Spectral Study Of The Magnetic Properties Of Ce₂Fe₁₇Hₓ (X=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, And 5), Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Olivier Isnard Nov 2000

Mössbauer Spectral Study Of The Magnetic Properties Of Ce₂Fe₁₇Hₓ (X=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, And 5), Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Olivier Isnard

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra of Ce2Fe17Hx, where x=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, have been measured and analyzed between 4.2 and 295 K. Because Ce2Fe17 exhibits a helical magnetic order between 225 and 90 K and a fan magnetic order below 90 K, its Mössbauer spectra were fit with a distribution of hyperfine fields and θ angles for four of the eight magnetically inequivalent sites. Because the hydrides exhibit a magnetization within the basal plane of the hexagonal cell, their Mössbauer spectra were fit with seven sextets. The four isomer shifts …

Tibiocalcaneal Kinematics Of Barefoot Versus Shod Running, Alex Stacoff, Benno M. Nigg, Christoph Reinschmidt, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Arne Lundberg Nov 2000

Tibiocalcaneal Kinematics Of Barefoot Versus Shod Running, Alex Stacoff, Benno M. Nigg, Christoph Reinschmidt, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Arne Lundberg

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Barefoot running kinematics has been described to vary considerably from shod running. However, previous investigations were typically based on externally mounted shoe and/or skin markers, which have been shown to overestimate skeletal movements. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare calcaneal and tibial movements of barefoot versus shod running using skeletal markers. Intracortical bone pins with reflective marker triads were inserted under standard local anesthetic into the calcaneus and tibia of five healthy male subjects. The subjects ran barefoot, with a normal shoe, with three shoe soles and two orthotic modifications. The three-dimensional tibiocalcaneal rotations were determined using …

Contributions Of Proximal And Distal Moments To Axial Tibial Rotation During Walking And Running, T. L. Bellchamber, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the cause and effect relationship between tibial internal rotation and pronation of the foot during walking and heel–toe running. This would allow predictions of orthotic effectiveness in reducing knee pain related to excessive internal tibial rotation. Kinematic and force plate data were collected from twenty subjects performing ten running and ten walking trials across a force plate. Using a least-squares algorithm, attitude matrices for each segment in each frame were obtained and the angular velocity vector of the tibia was calculated. The intersegmental moment at the ankle was calculated from ground reaction …

A Comparison Of Adjudicated Spousal Abusers And Controls Using The Mjvl.Pl-2 And Mcml-Ul, Sandra L. Lundblad

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Approximately 21.000 women per week are assaulted by their domestic partners in the United States (Stamp & Sabourin, l 995). Beasley and Stoltenberg ( 1992) advised that "work with abusive men could benefit from careful attention to the role of anger and personality disorders in this population" (p.316). Research generally indicates that male spousal abusers have been characterized in various ways and nave been created with varying levels of success. In order to design effective prevention and treatment plans, it is important to comprehend the nature of spousal abuse, and what research has to say about intimate abusers and their …

Foraging Preference Of Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2000, Laurel Klein, Joseph Reid Nov 2000

Foraging Preference Of Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2000, Laurel Klein, Joseph Reid

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Leaf cutter ants, Atta cephalotes, were found to make distinct tree species choices as herbivores in the premontane wet forest of Cerro Plano, Costa Rica. One trail from each of six nests was studied. Trail lengths varied, ranging from 3.30 m to 40.40m. Trees were identified along the trail, as well as the host tree at the end of the trails. Three leaves were taken from each tree and tested for toughness, thickness, and percent water content. The results for each test for each tree along a trail were compared to those for the host tree. The ants selected for …

Diversity Of Arboreal And Ground-Dwelling Ant Species In A Primary Forest And Grazed Pasture, November 2000, Mariel F. Bostrom

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Ants are very important to ecosystem function. They help to aerate soil, disperse seeds, distribute nutrients, and regulate other insect populations (Holldobler and Wilson 1990). Since a non-forested area will have a larger microclimate variation than a forest, it is expected to support more species (Torres 1984). In addition, arboreal ants can be expected to have a lower overall diversity than terrestrial ants, since there may be a smaller number of species adapted to tolerate the elevated range in abiotic conditions that occurs in arboreal environments (Nadkarni and Longino 1990). Ants were collected over eight days, using traps baited with …

The Effects Of Patch Size On Hummingbird Visitation And Pollination In Habracanthus Belpharohachis, November 2000, Monica Lisa Saldaña

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In tropical forests, plant species are sparsely distributed and in order to increase their probability of pollination they have developed bright, showy flowers that offer nectar to attract pollinators. In this study, I examined how the pollination rates are affected by the number of inflorescences present in patches of Habracanthus belpharohachis. In order to do this, I measured the percent of pollinated flowers from 22 small patches with one to five inflorescences, and flowers from 14 large patches with more than 15 inflorescences. I also recorded the number of visitations by the primary pollinator of H. belpharohachis, the Purple-throated Mountain-gem …

Spider Size, Web Location, And Prey Capture In The Colonial Orb-Weaver Metabus Gravidus, November 2000, Jamie E. Potosek

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Metabus gravidus spiders live in colonies of five to 70 individuals and construct their webs over moving water. Buskirk (1975) found larger spiders can take over the webs of smaller spiders and suggested that certain sites within the colony may have greater prey capture rates. Therefore, I hypothesized that larger spiders should occupy these positions in the colony. Colonies of M. gravidus were studied at the Quebrada Máquina stream in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I measured spider size, web size, height from water, distance from bank, and prey capture rates for 198 total webs. Twenty-four artificial webs were created to determine …
