Two-Dimensional Pendulum Experiments Using A Spark Generator, Rand S. Worland, Matthew J. Moelter Nov 2000

Two-Dimensional Pendulum Experiments Using A Spark Generator, Rand S. Worland, Matthew J. Moelter

Physics

Student understanding of the superposition of perpendicular harmonic oscillators can be enhanced using a spark generator to record position-versus-time data for smallamplitude pendulum motion in two dimensions. Our students have used this arrangement to analyze the motion of a spherical pendulum and a “Y-suspended” (Blackburn) pendulum that has two effective lengths.

Transnational Threats: Blending Law Enforcement And Military Strategies, Carolyn Pumphrey Dr. Nov 2000

Transnational Threats: Blending Law Enforcement And Military Strategies, Carolyn Pumphrey Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

On February 2-3, 2000, the U.S. Army War College, the Triangle Institute for Security Studies, and the Duke University Center for Law, Ethics, and National Security co-sponsored a conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The conference examined transnational threats, including terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction, cyber threats to the national infrastructure, and international organized crime. The goal was to evaluate the seriousness of such threats and discuss strategies for dealing with them. In particular, the conference sought to address the question of how military and law enforcement could blend their strategies to better counter transnational threats. A secondary purpose …

Toward Automated Abstraction For Protocols On Branching Networks, Michael D. Jones, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan Nov 2000

Toward Automated Abstraction For Protocols On Branching Networks, Michael D. Jones, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan

Faculty Publications

We have used various manual abstraction techniques to formally verify a transaction ordering property for an IO protocol over bus/bridge networks. In the context of network protocol verification, an abstraction is needed to reduce the unbounded number of network configurations to a small number of representative networks that can be checked using algorithmic methods. The manually derived abstraction was both brittle and difficult to validate. In this report, we discuss the need for abstraction techniques in the formal verification of protocols over networks and present our recent efforts to create an automatic abstraction technique for network protocols using predicate abstraction …

Elementary And Persistent Errors In The Economic Analysis Of Intellectual Property, Edmund W. Kitch Nov 2000

Elementary And Persistent Errors In The Economic Analysis Of Intellectual Property, Edmund W. Kitch

Vanderbilt Law Review

The literature on the economic analysis of intellectual property rights evidences a broad scholarly consensus on a number of central and important issues. First, intellectual property rights en- able economic actors to capture some of the benefits of the investment they make in establishing a good reputation, creating expressive works, and inventing new and improved technology. Absent intellectual property rights, copiers are free to take for themselves a significant part of the economic benefit generated by these types of investment and to undermine the incentive to make these in- vestments in the first place. Second, the investment activities induced by …

A Graphical Analysis Of Some Basic Results In Social Choice, Estelle Cantillon, Antonio Rangel Nov 2000

A Graphical Analysis Of Some Basic Results In Social Choice, Estelle Cantillon, Antonio Rangel

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We use a simple graphical approach to represent Social Welfare Functions that satisfy Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives and Anonymity. This approach allows us to provide simple and illustrative proofs of May’s Theorem, of variants of classic impossibility results, and of a recent result on the robustness of Majority Rule due to Maskin (1995). In each case, geometry provides new insights on the working and interplay of the axioms, and suggests new results including a new characterization of the entire class of Majority Rule SWFs, a strengthening of May’s Theorem, and a new version of Maskin’s Theorem.

Securitizing Russia: Discursive Practices Of The Baltic States, Øyvind Jæger Nov 2000

Securitizing Russia: Discursive Practices Of The Baltic States, Øyvind Jæger

Peace and Conflict Studies

The author argues that the security situation of the Baltic countries cannot be separated from the way the Balts themselves speak of security. This is a discourse of danger producing insecurity in pursuit of security. Moreover, this article is a study of identity by demonstrating how Baltic security issues are constituted by discourses of danger revolving around Russian Otherness and European Sameness. In conclusion, the following aspects are addressed: the prospects for the coming together of East and West in the Baltic Sea Region – and NATO’s role in this process – and whether this process will come to ease …
