Horse Creek Fen, Birdwood Creek And Kelly Ranch Inventory, Robert F. Steinauer
Horse Creek Fen, Birdwood Creek And Kelly Ranch Inventory, Robert F. Steinauer
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Horse Creek Fen preserve is a complex of wetland communities (Sandhills fen, Sandhills freshwater marsh, and northern sedge wet meadow) associated with Horse Creek, a ditched stream that drains the Allen Valley fen. Fen vegetation on the preserve is limited to approximately 20 acres on the western boundary of the preserve where it abuts the eastern end of the Allen Valley fen (Steinauer et al. 1996). The fen vegetation is surrounded primarily by Sandhills freshwater marsh, which in turn is surrounded by northern sedge wet meadow. Additional Sandhills freshwater marsh occurs near the eastern boundary of the preserve. The eastern …

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus: Description Of Persistence In Individual Pigs Upon Experimental Infection, R. Allende, W. W. Laegreid, G. F. Kutish, J. A. Galeota, R. W. Wills, Fernando A. Osorio
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
We studied the persistence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in individual experimentally infected pigs, during a period of up to 150 days postinfection (dpi). The results of this study suggest that the persistence of PRRSV involves continuous viral replication but that it is not a true steady-state persistent infection. The virus eventually clears the body and seems to do it in most of the animals by 150 dpi or shortly thereafter. High genetic stability was seen for several regions of the persistent PRRSV’s genome, although some consistent mutations in the genes of envelope glycoproteins and M protein …
A Benefit-Cost Analysis Model For Social Service Agencies, Robert Schalock, John Butterworth
A Benefit-Cost Analysis Model For Social Service Agencies, Robert Schalock, John Butterworth
All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications
Current public policy is based on two fundamental principles: equity and efficiency. Equitable programs contribute to balancing the needs and desires of the various groups in society; whereas efficient programs are those that serve to increase the net value of goods and services available to society. Benefit-cost analysis is a tool developed to determine whether a program produces effects that justify the costs incurred to operate the program. The benefit-cost model presented in this monograph requires the reader to:
- Understand the concept of an analytical perspective;
- Move beyond viewing benefit-cost analysis as a simple ratio of benefits to costs;
- Include …

Duty, Honor, Rape: Sexual Assault Against Women During War, Kevin Gerard Neill
Duty, Honor, Rape: Sexual Assault Against Women During War, Kevin Gerard Neill
Journal of International Women's Studies
From the Introduction:
In contrast to dutifully killing the enemy, a soldier is not supposed to rape a woman, at least in theory. But rapes occur in war. They always have, and often in settings and upon a scale that is difficult to comprehend. Accordingly, rape in times of war has a direct effect upon the society where the conflict takes place. More specifically, it affects women, and this violence against them can have the added, profoundly negative effect of eroding their particular social and environmental conditions. As difficult and emotional this issue may be, though, rape in war is …

Position Of Γ-Chain Carboxy-Terminal Regions In Fibrinogen/Fibrin Cross-Linking Mixtures, Kevin R. Siebenlist, David A. Meh, Michael W. Mosesson
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
There are conflicting ideas regarding the location of the carboxyl-terminal regions of cross-linked γ-chain dimers in double-stranded fibrin fibrils. Some investigators believe that the chains are always oriented longitudinally along each fibril strand and traverse the contacting ends of abutting fibrin D domains (“DD-long” cross-linking). Other investigations have indicated instead that the chains are situated transversely between adjacent D domains in opposing fibril strands (transverse cross-linking). To distinguish between these two possibilities, the γ dimer composition of factor XIIIa-cross-linked fibrin/fibrinogen complexes that had been formed through noncovalent D/E interactions between fibrinogen D domains and fibrin E domains was examined. Two …

Trial Practice And Procedure, C. Frederick Overby, Jason Crawford, Joshua Sacks, Richard A. Griggs, Matthew E. Cook
Mercer Law Review
This survey period is most notable for the diversity of cases touching upon trial practice and procedure decided by the Georgia appellate courts. Among those were cases fleshing out the permissible parameters of attorney-client contractual relations, scaling back the malpractice affidavit pleading requirement, defining further what constitutes a doctor-patient relationship, interpreting the wrongful death act to determine who can properly bring a claim, and declining to apply the self-contradictory testimony rule to a party's expert witness. Other important decisions addressed previously undecided evidentiary questions, confused medical providers attempting to comply with thirdparty requests for production of documents, and expanded the …

Teaching Science To English-As-Second-Language Learners: Teaching, Learning, And Assessment Strategies For Elementary Esl Students, Gayle A. Buck
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The number of reported LEP students enrolled in public and nonpublic schools has been increasing since 1986. In 1997, 22 State Education Agencies (SEA) in the United States reported the percent age of LEP students increased more than 10 per cent, and nine SEAs reported increases of 25 percent or greater (Macias, 1998). Overall, the number of students who speak languages other than English at home increased by more than 68 percent in the past 10 years (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, 1997). This article relates to the National Science Education Standards’ Teaching Standard B: Teachers of …

Both Sides Of The Looking Glass: Librarian And Teaching Faculty Perceptions Of Librarianship At Six Community Colleges, Devin Feldman, Susan Sciammarella
Both Sides Of The Looking Glass: Librarian And Teaching Faculty Perceptions Of Librarianship At Six Community Colleges, Devin Feldman, Susan Sciammarella
Publications and Research
Librarians and teaching faculty often have different perceptions of the roles of the library and the librarian in undergraduate education. A study surveying six community colleges reveals that there is much room for improvement in the interrelationship between librarians and teaching faculty. More effective communication and mutual respect would enhance the educational experience for students and provide a richer learning environment.

Simulation Of Daily And Monthly Stream Discharge From Small Watersheds Using The Swat Model, Crystal A. Spruill, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was evaluated and parameter sensitivities were determined while modeling daily streamflows in a small central Kentucky watershed over a two-year period. Streamflow data from 1996 were used to calibrate the model and streamflow data from 1995 were used for evaluation. The model adequately predicted the trends in daily streamflow during this period although Nash-Sutcliffe R2 values were –0.04 and 0.19 for 1995 and 1996, respectively. The model poorly predicted the timing of some peak flow values and recession rates during the last half of 1995. Excluding daily peak flow values from August …
From Hopeful Monsters To Homeotic Effects: Richard Goldschmidt's Integration Of Development, Evolution, And Genetics, Michael Dietrich
From Hopeful Monsters To Homeotic Effects: Richard Goldschmidt's Integration Of Development, Evolution, And Genetics, Michael Dietrich
Dartmouth Scholarship
Richard Goldschmidts research on homeotic mutants from 1940 until his death in 1958 represents one of the first serious efforts to integrate genetics, development, and evolution. Using two different models, Goldschmidt tried to show how different views of genetic structure and gene action could provide a mechanism for rapid speciation. Developmental systems were emphasized in one model and a hierarchy of genetic structures in the other. While Goldschmidt tried to find a balance between development and genetics, critics, such as Sewall Wright, urged him and eventually helped him incorporate population dynamics into his models as well. As such, the history …
