The Utilization Of Spirituality In Occupational Therapy: Beliefs, Practices, And Barriers, Jennifer S. Collins

Masters Theses

Spirituality has become an increasingly important topic in healthcare and specifically in occupational therapy. Previous studies of spirituality in occupational therapy indicated that while therapists believed spirituality was important to health and rehabilitation potential, few therapists reported incorporating spirituality into treatment (Engquist, Short-DeGraff, Gliner, & Oltjenbruns, 1997; Howe, 1996; Rose, 1999). This study utilized a survey design to examine occupational therapists' current beliefs and practices regarding spirituality, as well as asking therapists to identify barriers to the use of spirituality in treatment.

The results of this study indicate that beliefs and practices regarding spirituality in occupational therapy may be changing. …

In their co-authored article, "Comparative Literature in China," Xiaoyi Zhou and Q.S. Tong present a brief intellectual and institutional history of the discipline. According to Zhou and Tong, main features of the history of comparative literature in China include the fact that as an academic discipline and a mode of intellectual inquiry imported to China from the West in the early twentieth century, the discpline has always been a priori strategically political and the proposition that the development of comparative literature in China is closely related to the formation of China’s literary modernity includes the parallel issue of national identity. …

This article outlines the concept and initial implementation of an intergenerational learning community (ILC), a new charter school concept, and reviews relevant literature. We discuss the mission, curriculum, educational design, philosophy, and lessons learned from initial implementation of The Intergenerational School (TIS). Such multiage communities of learners represent a conceptual and organizational response to the challenges that rapid cultural and environmental change and resultant alienation are posing for human societies. © 2000 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that peoples' perceptions of household seismic adjustments, in addition to their perceptions of earthquakes themselves, should predict the likelihood that seismic adjustments are performed. However, little research has been done to address this issue. While recent research has found peoples' perceptions of the effectiveness of household adjustments to influence adjustment levels, people's perceptions of inconvenience of household seismic adjustments - namely the cost, time effort, required cooperation and required knowledge involved in making these adjustments - have been found to not influence seismic adjustment. Successful soybean production is greatly affected by variety selection for a given growing area. This publication reports the agronomic performance of entries in the 2001 South Dakota performance trials for conventional (non-Roundup Ready™) and RoundupReady™ soybean varieties. Important factors in variety selection include yield, maturity, plant height, lodging resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. In the case of public varieties, additional information including emergence, shattering, and iron chlorosis scores (Table A) are available to assist in making variety selections.

The topics discussed include the history of private dwelling associations, the makeup of these organizations, and the parallels between them and their larger, public counterparts. Specific areas such as taxes, infrastructure, codes covenants and restrictions, and law enforcement are discussed in detail. The concept of a pedestrian-friendly environment would be a secondaiy concept to be applied to the development plan. Since the defensible space concept deploys residents themselves as the key players to ensure their own security, the success of the proposed development depends on residents. Today urban planners have many tools at their disposal to develop, nurture and endorse proper planning techniques in both future urban developments and existing neighborhoods. However, when it comes to existing neighborhood code enforcement many planning departments lack proper funding to efficiently enforce code compliance issues in existing neighborhoods. Financial constraints placed on our urban planning departments, coupled with increasing urban sprawl, make code enforcement of existing neighborhoods difficult and time consuming. Trying to evaluate complex activities involves one in a series of difficult problems that have not yet been solved. It is particularly difficult to deal with public policymaking, which not only is complex, but also involves many values. Nevertheless, we can develop a rigorous approach to analyzing, evaluating, and improving public policymaking if we start by developing explicit criteria and standards that will replace the implicit assumptions, one-sided views, and halo effects we all use for lack of anything better.

Since the late 1800s land-use planning in America has existed to separate manufacturing, commercial, residential, and agricultural activities to “encourage orderly management into the building and maintenance of cities. One of the first examples of regulating the location of urban land-use activities occurred in New York City. In 1916 a group of prosperous Fifth Avenue merchants wanted to halt the encroachment of Lower Manhattan garment manufacturers to the Upper East Side.
