Design Methods For Auger Cip Piles In Compression, Giuliana A. Zelada, Richard Wesley Stephenson

This Paper Reports on a Study of 43 Compression Load Tests (Five Fully Instrumented) and Ten Pullout Tests of Auger Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles in Sand. Eight Design Methods Reported in the Literature Were Used to Predict the Measured Pile Capacities. Ultimate Load Capacities of the ACEP Load Tests Were Determined using Two Different Definitions of Ultimate Capacity and Compared with Predictions. Load Transfer Behavior Was Determined from a Study of the Fully Instrumented Pile Tests and Compared to Predicted Values. Recommendations Are Made Regarding the Design Approach Most Appropriate for These Foundations and the Best Procedure for Estimating Ultimate Capacity …

Collecting in Dumoga-Bone National Park in northeastern Sulawesi during The Royal Geographical Society’s 1985 ‘Project Wallace’ expedition resulted in the discovery of the first known Indonesian Chlamydopsinae. Ten new species are described in the genus Orectoscelis Lewis, previously known only from the Australian continent. Nonmajority Unions, Employee Participation Programs, And Worker Organizing: Irreconcilable Differences?, Carol Brooke

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The debate over section 8(a)(2) of the National Labor Relations Act and the appropriate role of employer-sponsored employee participation plans ("EPPs") in the workplace coincides with growing attention to the usefulness of nonmajority unions ("NMUs") in providing a voice for workers. This Note examines the effectiveness of an NMU in a manufacturing plant in rural North Carolina, and the interaction of that worker-run organization with EPPs established by management. The experience of these workers suggests that section 8(a)(2) should be amended to require employers with EPPs to offer equal support and assistance to NMUs.

Mrnas Encoding Aquaporins Are Present During Murine Preimplantation Development., H Offenberg, L C Barcroft, A Caveney, D Viuff, P D Thomsen, A J Watson

The present study was conducted to investigate the mechanisms underlying fluid movement across the trophectoderm during blastocyst formation by determining whether aquaporins (AQPs) are expressed during early mammalian development. AQPs belong to a family of major intrinsic membrane proteins and function as molecular water channels that allow water to flow rapidly across plasma membranes in the direction of osmotic gradients. Ten different AQPs have been identified to date. Murine preimplantation stage embryos were flushed from the oviducts and uteri of superovulated CD1 mice. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods employing primer sets designed to amplify conserved sequences of AQPs (1-9) …

Genetic algorithms are an evolutionary technique that use crossover and mutation operators to solve optimization problems using a survival of the fittest idea. They have been used successfully in a variety of different problems, including the traveling salesman problem. In the traveling salesman problem we wish to find a tour of all nodes in a weighted graph so that the total weight is minimized. The traveling salesman problem is NP-hard but has many real world applications so a good solution would be useful. Many different crossover and mutation operators have been devised for the traveling salesman problem and each give …

Because of the severity of the fires in the summer of 2000 and because of the growing debate over what to do about expected future fires, the Andrus Center convened The Fires Next Time conference on December 7, 2000. The conference had several goals in mind. First, it sought to establish a set of sideboards for the discussion of fire by inviting experts to talk about the history, science, and policy of fire management. The purpose was to articulate what we knew, did not know, and should know about fire in the western United States.

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood

Students across a wide range of countries (including Thailand) express their liking for classroom learning activities in which they work purposefully in groups in order to achieve common goals. This mode of learning also lies at the heart of the philosophy and techniques of "collaborative learning." This paper presents briefly the principles which underlie collaborative learning. It describes a range of strategies and techniques which teachers can use in order to organize collaborative learning. Finally, it discusses how collaborative learning tasks fit into an overall framework for language learning and how they relate to the development of learner autonomy.

Ecological And Physiological Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of Burrowing Owls In Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Randall L. Griebel

The western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugea) has been declining throughout much of its range, and in some areas, quite dramatically. In the Great Plains region, these declines appear to be closely associated with declines in prairie dog numbers. Most research to date has taken place on relatively small, fragmented prairie dog colonies. The objectives of this study were to analyze burrowing owl reproductive performance (i.e., clutch size, brood size, and number fledged), and nestling body condition in relation to nest level and colony level factors in Buffalo Gap National Grassland, South Dakota. "Why We Do This Is Important": An Inner- City Girl's Attitudes Toward Reading And Writing In The Classroom, Carol Leroy Ph.D.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This qualitative case study explored an inner-city girl's views on school-based literacy activities in relation to several factors identified in the literature as important to children's attitudes toward reading and writing. They include: intrinsic satisfaction the child gains from the activities, the child's beliefs about the importance of schooling, and her relationship with her teacher. The author/researcher's purpose was to further understanding about ways to enhance children's attitudes toward reading and writing.
