Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The family literacy movement, which emphasizes respect for diversity and the cultural heritage of participants, is gaining momentum. Acknowledging the importance of family-aseducator, researchers have searched for effective strategies to develop children's oral language and literacy more authentically. The art of storytelling provides an excellent vehicle for promoting and enhancing language and literacy development within families. A sampling of effective family literacy programs across the United States revealed that each included storytelling as a vital component.

Using Word Boxes As A Large Group Phonics Approach In A First Grade Classroom, Laurice M. Joseph Ph.D.
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The purpose this study was to explore the effectiveness of word boxes phonics instruction on beginning first-grade children's word identification and spelling performance. Forty-eight children were randomly selected to participate in either the word boxes instruction condition or a more traditional phonics condition. All children were administered a word identification and spelling pretest. At the completion of experimental conditions, children were administered word identification and spelling posttest and transfer measures.

Context: Cryotherapy is often applied using a standard treatment time. Use of a standard treatment time fails to consider the insulating effect subculaneous adipose tissue has during cooling of underlying muscle. If differences in adipose lissuc thickness alter I he effects of cryotherapy, then a standard application time may not produce a slamlard clTcct for all patients. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of subcutaneous adipose tissue on cooling time during cryothcrapy. Design: A 1 x 4 factorial design was used in this study. A role for professional communicators to play in a postmodern context is to work as an experimentalist, designing a system that supports users’ free engagement with the content of the system, inviting people to engage that system, observing the ways in which those engagements proceed, and from those observations, learning how to refine the system to support more fruitful future engagements.The role serves to cultivate an environment in which users’ conversations with one another and their interaction with the system’s content may thrive.This thesis purposes that the experimentalist is a useful and practical role for a communicator in the current …

We examined six historical specimens of the endangered North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) using DNA isolated from documented baleen plates from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sequences from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from these samples were compared with those from a near-exhaustive survey (269 of approximately 320 individuals) of the remaining right whales in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Our results suggest that there has been only relatively modest change in maternal lineage diversity over the past century in the North Atlantic right whale population. Normile reports on Japan's expanded scientific whaling program and notes that "Canada, the United States, the Soviet Union, South Africa, and Japan were among several countries that [conducted scientific whaling] before 1982 [the year the IWC passed the worldwide commercial moratorium on whaling], but in recent years Japan has stood alone." Although true, this statement omits three equally important points.

Stabilization Of Bound State Decay In An Intense Monochromatic High-Frequency Field, N. L. Manakov, M. V. Frolov, Bogdan Borca, Anthony F. Starace

The formalism of complex quasienergies is used for exact calculation of the field-dependent decay rate for a weakly bound particle (in the model of a three-dimensional zero-range potential) in a strong monochromatic laser field. It is shown that the adiabatic (quasistationary) stabilization regime in this model occurs at frequencies ω exceeding the binding energy and only in a limited intensity range. A simple estimate is obtained for the critical field of stabilization breakdown. The effect may be observed for the decay of H– ions in the field of a neodymium laser of femtosecond duration.

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson

An international environmental organization would need to be loosely structured initially with a focus on a narrow range of environmental issues. It also would need to emphasize consensus and limit the scope of its interventions to avoid defections by important participants. The benefits of such an organization include the potential for achieving more nearly optimal levels of environmental protection, cost savings from reduction of duplication and managerial economies of scale, and the strengthening of environmental interests in negotiations on the coordination of the environmental regime with other international regimes such as those focusing on trade or development.

From Mcguffey Readers To Taking Notes On The Sermon: Literacy Experiences In A Catholic Home Schooling Group, Jennifer L. Altieri Ph.D.
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study looks at the literacy practices of a Catholic home schooling group located in the Pacific North West. Semistructured interviews conducted with each parent in the home schooling group comprised the primary data source. Researchers have called for more research looking at specific teaching practices of such individuals (Cizek &Ray, 1995; Knafle &Wescott 1994) involved with home schooling. Findings of this study revealed that reading aloud was important to all parents. Benefits cited by parents included immediate feedback for children, ability to pace themselves as necessary, and the opportunity to tailor lessons to individual child.

A new Intel's 64-bit chip Itanium has a new instruction set which includes a fused multiply-add instruction x1+x2*x3. In this short article, we explain the empirical reasons behind the choice of this instruction, give possible theoretical explanation for this choice, and mention a related theoretical challenge.
