Drama Praxis : Rural Arts Workers And Lifelong Learning : A Phenomenological Study, Susan E. Gibson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the experiences of a specific group of arts workers in an isolated rural community in the South West of Western Australia. These participants have all worked in the community as arts workers for an extended period of time. Through phenomenological research, the telling of these workers stories, it is anticipated that the research will highlight, strengthen and enrich the political and economic positions of these workers. Living With A Transvestite : A Phenomenological Study Of Wives And Committed Partners Of Transvestites, Heather Christine Freegard Jan 2000

Living With A Transvestite : A Phenomenological Study Of Wives And Committed Partners Of Transvestites, Heather Christine Freegard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Being a man or woman is at the core of human social lives and personal identity, and guides appropriate behaviours such as dress, mannerisms and relationships. Transvestism, or the practice of wearing the clothes of the other gender, challenges societal values and guidelines for behaviour. The attitude of society to this practice has varied from veneration to vilification depending on the period of history and the culture of the people. In western countries, although there is little social or legal repression, transvestism is largely a hidden phenomena. The tradition of comic drag has dominated public recognition of cross-dressing. Hence transvestites …

Assessing Moral Reasoning Development Through Values Education Within A Western Australian Independent School, Kelvin Fairclough

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The relationship between Values Education and corresponding moral reasoning development has been explored within a group of forty-six year eight students (twelve and thirteen years old). Participants were tested with a Sociomoral Reflection Objective Measure instrument to index their moral reasoning stage development (reported as a Moral Maturity Score). Randomly dividing the group into two equal proportions they were assigned to an Experimental or Control group. The Experimental group was presented with Values Education through exposure to age relevant moral dilemmas which envelope a societal value drawn from the Core Shared Values (Curriculum Council of Western Australia, 1998). Within each …

Film And Architecture: Discovering The Self-Reflection Of Frank Capra And Frank Lloyd Wright Through Contextual Analysis, Marie Lynore Kohler Jan 2000

Film And Architecture: Discovering The Self-Reflection Of Frank Capra And Frank Lloyd Wright Through Contextual Analysis, Marie Lynore Kohler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Film and architecture were analyzed to evaluate the rhetorical potential these media hold in communicating the self-reflection of their creators. In an attempt to uncover common communication elements which further link the relationship between film and architecture, specific works of director Frank Capra and architect Frank Lloyd Wright were examined. The study utilizes both an historical, case study approach, combined with a contextual analysis of two selected works. Because Zettl's (1990) theory of applied media aesthetics emphasizes the importance of the medium in the communication process, this methodology was applied to Capra's film It's A Wonderful Life and Wright's building …

Hamlet: Red, An Adaptation, Noelle Christine Youngblood Jan 2000

Hamlet: Red, An Adaptation, Noelle Christine Youngblood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hamlet: Red, an adaptation proposes an in-depth method of teaching Shakespeare's works by reconstructing the literature so it is relative to the cultural context of its students. This proposal focuses specifically on Hamlet as studied by at-risk middle schoolers. Beginning with a vital teacher-student rapport, the process continues through selection of a text based upon the dynamics of the students, analysis and rewriting of that text based upon its themes that relate to the students, and final production of the completed adaptation; Complexities arise when teachers, concerned with positively influencing each of their students, are faced with tremendous diversity in …
