Dessiccation Using Saturated Salt Solutions And Improvement Germination Rate Of Walnut (Juglans Regia L.) Somatic Embryos, Hati̇ce Dumanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Desiccation of somatic embryos under different air humidities conditioned by saturated salt solutions for different dura-tions; relationships between desiccation and germination or root formation in the dark; and effects of desiccation and gibberellic acid on germinating of 'Su-2' walnut somatic embryonic embryo line were investigated. Survival of embryos was low (about 10%) or zero when loss of fresh weight was about 90% and dry matter was about 70%. The highest germinating percentages (13.3-23.3%) were obtained with about 40.4-77.3% of loss of fresh weight and 9.1-34.6% of dry matter of desiccated embryos in covered plates over saturated MgCl 2 .6H 2 …

Did Bacillus Megaterium Pick Up Plasmid Virulence Genes?, Sharin M. Gabl

Plasmids are known to carry genes that allow bacteria to survive in different environments. Virulence genes that cause bacteria to be pathogenic are also found on plasmids. Bacillus megaterium is a non-pathogenic, spore-forming bacteria that is found in soil, but recently a strain of B. megaterium was reported to cause a mild case of diarrhea in an infant. This appears to be the first case of infection caused by B. megaterium (CHI). Bacillus cereus is a related species and a known gastroenteric pathogen. Research has shown that the pathogenicity in some strains of B. cereus is caused by either an …

The exocrine pancreas’ function is to synthesize and secrete a battery of enzymes in response to secretagogues. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger in a variety of tissue types, eliciting an impressive variety of biological responses. Biosynthesis of NO in the pancreas is catalyzed by two known nitric oxide synthase isoforms, NOS(I) and NOS(II). However, the role of NO in secretion from pancreatic acinar cells has been unclear. Early in the nineteenth century, geologist Charles Lyell reasoned that successively older faunas would contain progressively more extinct species and younger faunas relatively more extant species. The present, with one-hundred percent extant species, was the chronological anchor. In archaeology a similar notion underpins the direct historical approach: Successively older cultures will contain progressively fewer of the cultural traits found in extant cultures and relatively more prehistoric traits. As in Lyell's scheme, the chronological anchor is the present. When A. L. Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers

This Portraits of Leadership research focuses on using children's artwork to study girls' perceptions of leadership. 244 school age children were asked to draw their image of a leader and to write descriptions of why they chose this person as a leader. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among gender, age, and creativity and choice of leader in drawing and written descriptions. Results indicate that, though both girls and boys chose males as leaders more often than females, girls' portraits conformed to the literature regarding gender roles and traditional leadership styles. Phase Determination During Normal Running Using Kinematic Data, Alan Hreljac, Nikolaos Stergiou

Algorithms to predict heelstrike and toe-off times during normal running at subject-selected speeds, using only kinematic data, are presented. To assess the accuracy of these algorithms, results are compared with synchronised force platform recordings from ten subjects performing ten trials each. Using a single 180Hz camera, positioned in the sagittal plane, the average RMS error in predicting heelstrike times is 4.5 ms, whereas the average RMS error in predicting toe-off times is 6.9ms. Average true errors (negative for an early prediction) are +2.4 ms for heelstrike and +2.8ms for toe-off, indicating that systematic errors have not occured. The average RMS …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the failures seen in the moisture barrier of fire fighting turnout gear. Moisture barriers taken from garments in field were evaluated to establish a baseline for comparison. Moisture barriers were exposed as part of a three-piece ensemble and as a single layer moisture barrier to instrumental light exposure in a Carbon Arc Fade-ometer and natural sunlight exposure according to AATCC and ASTM test methods. After exposure, moisture barriers were visually examined using stereo and compound microscopes. Thus the purpose of the book was to inquire about the relationship between the two. Soil Hydraulic Controls Over Nitrogen Oxide Emissions And Nitrogen Cycling In Tropical Agriculture, Antje M. Weitz

Soils are the major natural source of nitrous oxide (N2O). Intensive land use increased atmospheric concentrations of this greenhouse gas. Soil microbes produce and consume nitrogen oxides (NO, N2O) during the processes of nitrification (aerobic) and denitrification (anaerobic). Micro-scale variability of controlling factors cause nitrification and denitrification to occur simultaneously in soils, resulting in high spatial variability of nitrogen oxide emissions. Fertilization increases nutrient availability and thus N2O fluxes. Forest soils in the humid tropics account for 20--50% of all N2O sources. Expansion and intensification of tropical agriculture is expected to increase atmospheric N2O concentrations.
