The purpose of this study was to compare the level of death anxiety displayed by people who have experienced Near Death Experiences (NDEs) to the level of death anxiety displayed by people who have not experienced NDEs. The Near Death Experiencers were drawn from members of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and others contacted through mutual acquaintances. The subjects were requested to complete the Near-Death Experience scale developed by Dr. Bruce Greyson as well as the Templer Death Anxiety Scale (TDAS) developed by Donald I. Templer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of teaching social skills to a group of 14 at-risk kindergarten students that were identified by their classroom teachers as exhibiting social skills deficits. A pre-test and post-test experimental design was devised using the Social Skills Direct Observation by Sheridan (1997). Students participated in a group social ski11s training program for five weeks. A statistical comparison between the pre and post test data was then performed by means of a nonparametric procedure. A Comparison Of Body-Esteem In Adolescent Girls Between The Hutterite And Mainstream Western Cultures, Amanda Ann Walgren

The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural basis of body-esteem and negative body image in adolescent females. This study focused on the differences between the culture of the Hutterites, an Anabaptist communal society, and the mainstream Western culture in the same geographic area. The Body-Esteem Scale (Mendelson & White, 1982) was administered to 35 Hutterite and 31 mainstream girls between the ages of 12 and 17. The Hutterite girls were found to have significantly higher body-esteem scores than the mainstream girls. These findings add to the vast amount of research linking body-esteem to cultural factors. This study examined the self-efficacy of adolescent girls and its relation to the type of high school they attended, whether it was single-sex or coeducational. A convenient, volunteer sample was used from two high schools in the metropolitan area of St. Louis, Missouri. The 234 adolescents surveyed, ranged from 15 to 18 years of age. The participants were administered the Self-efficacy Scale (SES) after parental permission was received. The two schools conducted the surveys during religion classes. Conceptual Clarification And Policy-Related Science: The Case Of Chemical Hormesis, Kevin C. Elliott

This paper examines the epistemological warrant for a toxicological phenomenon known as chemical hormesis. First, it argues that conceptual confusion contributes significantly to current disagreements about the status of chemical hormesis as a biological hypothesis. Second, it analyzes seven distinct concepts of chemical hormesis, arguing that none are completely satisfactory. Finally, it suggests three ramifications of this analysis for ongoing debates about the epistemological status of chemical hormesis. This serves as a case study supporting the value of philosophical methodologies such as conceptual clarification for addressing contemporary scientific disputes, including policy-related scientific disputes that may be heavily influencedby social and …

The high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioresolution of β- substituted tryptophan analogues by direct and indirect methods is reported. The direct separation was carried out on chiral crown ether-bonded, on the macrocyclic antibiotic teicoplanin-bonded or on different derivatized β- cyclodextrin-bonded phases. The indirect resolution was achieved by applying pre-column derivatization with the chiral reagents 1-fluoro-2,4- dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide (FDAA) and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D- glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate (GITC). In the separation of all four isomers of the analytes, the indirect methods seemed to be more efficient than the direct methods. The transition to democracy in South Africa has brought with it certain challenges. The main challenge is to get rid of crime and corruption. The paper presents a technique to combat white-collar crime in telephone transactions by identifying and verifying speakers using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Results are presented to show that speaker identification is feasible and this is illustrated with two different types of ANN architectures and with two different types of characteristic features as inputs to ANNs.

A doubly labelled tracer molecule of glucose, [6,6^-2HJglucose, has been used to measure the rate of glucose appearance in blood due to endogenous glucose production (by the liver and kidneysj.^l,2 Considered 'non-recirculating', this tracer generally provides a realistic estimate of glucose kinetics.^2,3 Used as a dual tracer in conjunction with [l-¹³C]glucose, the extent of glucose recycling can be quantitated.^2-4 but the extent of possible recirculation of a single deuterium atom on newly formed glucose must then be considered.

Human cells that live in biological harmony can become cancerous. As they do so, they engage in anaerobic respiration, undergo rapid cell growth and division according to nonmitotic rules, and important changes take place in their metabolism. We conducted several investigations in an effort to block or change the metabolic characteristics of cancer cells using a typical cancerous cell line. Specifically,we investigated the effects of sodium selenite (Na_2 SeO_ 3 ) on antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced glutathione levels in Hepatoma G_ 2 cells, cells that show rapid glutamine uptake and metabolism. An important inorganic phase of synthetic bone applications, calcium hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca_10 (PO_ 4 ) 6_(OH_2 ), was prepared as a single-phase and sub-micron bioceramic powder. Carbonated HA powders were synthesized from calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate salts dissolved in synthetic body fluid (SBF) solutions, containing urea (H_2 NCONH_2 ) and enzyme urease, under the biomimetic conditions of 37°C and pH 7.4, with a novel chemical precipitation technique. These powders were also found to contain trace amounts of Na and Mg ions in them, intentionally incorporated by using SBF solutions, instead of pure water, during their synthesis. The …
