A Survey Of Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In Costa Rican Wildlife, Mark Wieland '00 Jan 2000

A Survey Of Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In Costa Rican Wildlife, Mark Wieland '00

Honors Projects

Amphibians, turtles, rodents, and birds collected from a tropical conservation area in northwestern Costa Rica where pesticides are not directly applied were analyzed for organochlorine (OC) pesticide contamination. Six of thirty-nine amphibians (three of eight species), three of six turtles (two species), one of eight rodents (one species), and nine of twenty-five insectiverous birds (four species) contained OC compounds ranging from 2.77 ng/g to 277.70 ng/g. The most frequently detected compound (found in thirteen organisms) was p,p'-DDE. Heptachlor, delta-BHC, dieldrin, endosulfan II, and p,p' -DDD were each found in four or more organisms, while eight additional OC compounds were detected …

Response To Critique Of The Claim Of Cannibalism At Cowboy Wash, Patricia M. Lambert, Banks L. Leonard, Brian R. Billman, Richard A. Marlar, Margaret E. Newman, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

The original authors of Billman et af. (2000) are joined by three other analysts from the Cowboy Wash research team to respond to the critique of this article by Dongoske et af. (2000). Dongoske and his coauthors state that Billman et af. (2000) failed to test alternative hypotheses or to consider alternative explanations for the findings at 5MTJOOJO and similar sites. The original authors point out that alternative hypotheses were examined and rejected, leaving a violent episode of cannibalism as the most plausible explanation for the remains found at 5MTJOOJO. Dongoske et af. also question many aspects of the osteological, …

Birth Order, Sibling Investment, And Fertility Among Ju/’Hoansi (!Kung), Patricia Draper, Raymond Hames Jan 2000

Birth Order, Sibling Investment, And Fertility Among Ju/’Hoansi (!Kung), Patricia Draper, Raymond Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Birth order has been examined over a wide variety of dimensions in the context of modern populations. A consistent message has been that it is better to be born first. The analysis of birth order in this paper is different in several ways from other investigations into birth order effects. First, we examine the effect of birth order in an egalitarian, small-scale, kin-based society, which has not been done before. Second, we use a different outcome measure, fertility, rather than outcome measures of social, psychological, or economic success. We find, third, that being born late in an egalitarian, technologically simple …

Melanocortin-1-Receptor (Mcr-1) Gene Polymorphisms Associated With The Chicken E Locus Alleles, Andrew Ellett

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The melanocortin 1-receptor (MCl-R) gene has been associated with E locus phenotypes in chickens. Variant alleles of the E locus are important for accurate down color sexing and also for the inhibition of unwanted tissue pigmentation in broilers. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) based tests for various replacement substitutions found in the published E allele sequences gave unexpected results when tested against known alleles of the E locus. To resolve these issues and gain a better understanding of how replacement substitutions in the MCl-R gene are affecting E locus phenotypes, a number of accessions of the e+, eb, wheaten ( ewh …

Nf422 Sunflower Head Moth Management, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein, Ray E. Weed Jan 2000

Nf422 Sunflower Head Moth Management, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein, Ray E. Weed

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Sunflower head moth identification and biology, management, and chemical control. Sunflower head moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst), can cause substantial economic loss to commercial sunflowers in Nebraska and the surrounding region. Populations of sunflower head moth vary tremendously from year to year. Consequently, pest monitoring is important each growing season to determine when moths first appear and the extent of the infestation. Field scouting in confection sunflower fields is critical because of their higher value and the importance of maintaining quality. Topics include sunflower head moth identification and biology, management, and chemical control.

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Ehrlichia chaffeensis was sought among patients with a history of tick exposure and fever, and the accuracy of other diagnostic tests was compared with that of primary isolation. Among the 38 patients enrolled, E. chaffeensis was isolated from the blood of 7 (18%) and from cerebrospinal fluid specimens of 2 of these 7. All 7 patients also were positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, and 6 patients developed diagnostic titers of antibody to E. chaffeensis. The isolates were characterized by molecular analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the 120-kDa protein gene, and the variable-length PCR target (VLPT) …

Mineral Transformation Associated With The Microbial Reduction Of Magnetite, Hailiang Dong, James K. Fredrickson, David W. Kennedy, John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Tullis C. Onstott Jan 2000

Mineral Transformation Associated With The Microbial Reduction Of Magnetite, Hailiang Dong, James K. Fredrickson, David W. Kennedy, John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Tullis C. Onstott

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Although dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) are capable of reducing a number of metals in oxides and soluble forms, the factors controlling the raterextent of magnetite reduction and the nature of the mineral products resulting from magnetite reduction are not well understood. This study was carried out to investigate mechanisms and biogeochemical processes occurring during magnetite reduction by the DIRB, Shewanella putrefaciens strains CN32 and MR-1. Reduction experiments were performed with biogenic and synthetic magnetite in well-defined solutions. Biogenic magnetite was generated via microbial reduction of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). Biogenic magnetite in solutions buffered with either bicarbonate (HCO3 …

Modeling Environmental Condition With Indices: A Case Study Of Sustainability And Soil Resources, Jennie Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt, Dana Hoag Jan 2000

Modeling Environmental Condition With Indices: A Case Study Of Sustainability And Soil Resources, Jennie Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt, Dana Hoag

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The authors present a framework that illustrates how a resource quality index can be used to examine policy relevant questions regarding environmental condition, the management of a resource as a production output, and sustainability. The framework demonstrates that heterogeneous endowments of a resource can change over time in different ways. By evaluating these changes using substitution, reversibility and uncertainty criteria, we can suggest four general guidelines for managing an environmental resource in a single production process. This framework was applied in a case study to three soil types (stable, neutral and susceptible) used in agricultural production in the Midwestern United …

Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena Phocoena) Abundance In Alaska: Bristol Bay To Southeast Alaska, 1991-1993, M. Dahlheim, A. York, R. Towell, J. Waite, J. Breiwick

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Between 1991 and 1993, Alaska harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) abundance was investigated during aerial surveys throughout much of the coastal and offshore waters from Bristol Bay in the eastern Bering Sea to Dixon Entrance in Southeast Alaska. Line-transect methodology was used, and only those observations made during optimal conditions were analyzed. Survey data indicated densities of 4.48 groups/100 km2, or approximately 3,531 harbor porpoises (95% C.I. 2,206-5,651) in Bristol Bay and 0.54 groups/100 km2, or 136 harbor porpoises (95% C.I. 11-1,645) for Cook Inlet. Efforts off Kodiak Island resulted in densities of 1.85 groups/100 …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

1. We examined spatial patterns in population characteristics (density, biomass, mean body length) and physiological condition (lipid content, length-weight) of the amphipod Diporeia spp. in Lake Michigan by collecting samples at up to 85 sites in late summer 1994 and 1995. Variables were examined relative to water depth and three lake regions: south, central and north. Most major river systems are found in the south, and this region is more nutrient-enriched compared to the north.

2. Over all sites, mean density was 5240 m-2, biomass was 4.1 g dry wt m-2, and mean body length was …

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger Jan 2000

Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A review of the recent literature and research in progress on bird collisions with
communication towers was contracted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the five year period 1995 through 1999, very little research was published or conducted that is relevant to the bird-communication tower collision problem. It seems that since the major reviews of the late 1970s and early 1980s, few researchers and others have been interested in researching the problem. Before 1985, there was an enormous body of literature, mostly anecdotal that has not been examined analytically.

For the current review,, a standard literature search …

On Measuring Net Ecosystem Carbon Exchange Over Tall Vegetation On Complex Terrain, Dennis Bladocchi, John Finnigan, Kell Wilson, K. T. Paw U, Eva Falge Jan 2000

On Measuring Net Ecosystem Carbon Exchange Over Tall Vegetation On Complex Terrain, Dennis Bladocchi, John Finnigan, Kell Wilson, K. T. Paw U, Eva Falge

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

To assess annual budgets of CO2 exchange between the biosphere and atmosphere over representative ecosystems, long-term measurements must be made over ecosystems that do not exist on ideal terrain. How to interpret eddy covariance measurements correctly remains a major task. At present, net ecosystem CO2 exchange is assessed, by members of the micrometeorological community, as the sum of eddy covariance measurements and the storage of CO2 in the underlying air. This approach, however, seems unsatisfactory as numerous investigators are reporting that it may be causing nocturnal respiration flux densities to be underestimated.
A new theory was recently …

Grassland Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields In The Great Plains, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2000

Grassland Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields In The Great Plains, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The area enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program in the Great Plains is enormous: nearly 18 million acres, or more than 7 million hectares, in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. This change in land use has had a huge influence on grassland bird populations. Many, but certainly not all, grassland species flourish in CRP habitats. Responses to the program vary not only by species, but by region, year, vegetation composition in a field, and whether or not a field was hayed or grazed. Further, the large scale of CRP has allowed researchers to …

Chronology And Geochemistry Of Late Holocene Eolian Deposits In The Brandon Sand Hills, Manitoba, Canada, Stephen A. Wolfe, Daniel R. Muhs, Peter P. David, John P. Mcgeehin Jan 2000

Chronology And Geochemistry Of Late Holocene Eolian Deposits In The Brandon Sand Hills, Manitoba, Canada, Stephen A. Wolfe, Daniel R. Muhs, Peter P. David, John P. Mcgeehin

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Accelerator mass spectrometry and conventional radiocarbon age determinations of organic matter from paleosols indicate that the Brandon Sand Hills area of southern Manitoba has been subjected to recurrent intervals of eolian activity in the past 5000 years. Although precise regional correlations are precluded by dating uncertainties, periods of most notable paleosol development occurred around 2300 to 2000, 1400 to 1000, and 600 to 500 cal yr BP with eolian activity occurring before and after each of these periods. Episodes of eolian activity may correspond to periods of regional drought, whereas paleosols mark periods of increased moisture availability and stabilization by …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Examples are presented of inter-hemispheric comparison of instrumental climate and paleoclimate proxy records from the Americas for different temporal scales. Despite a certain symmetry of seasonal precipitation patterns along the PEP 1 transect, decadal variability of winter precipitation shows different characteristics in terms of amplitude and frequency in both the last 100 and last 1000 years. Such differences in variability are also seen in a comparison of time series of different El Nino/Southern Oscillation proxy records from North and South America, however, these differences do not appear to affect the spatial correlation with Pacific sea surface temperature patterns. Local and …

Distribution, Speciation, And Transport Of Mercury In Stream-Sediment, Stream-Water, And Fish Collected Near Abandoned Mercury Mines In Southwestern Alaska, Usa, John E. Gray, Peter M. Theodorakos, Elizabeth A. Bailey, Ralph R. Turner Jan 2000

Distribution, Speciation, And Transport Of Mercury In Stream-Sediment, Stream-Water, And Fish Collected Near Abandoned Mercury Mines In Southwestern Alaska, Usa, John E. Gray, Peter M. Theodorakos, Elizabeth A. Bailey, Ralph R. Turner

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Concentrations of total Hg, Hg(II), and methylmercury were measured in stream-sediment, stream-water, and fish collected downstream from abandoned mercury mines in southwestern Alaska to evaluate environmental effects to surrounding ecosystems. These mines are found in a broad belt covering several tens of thousands of square kilometers, primarily in the Kuskokwim River basin. Mercury ore is dominantly cinnabar (HgS), but elemental mercury (Hg °) is present in ore at one mine and near retorts and in streams at several mine sites. Approximately 1400 t of mercury have been produced from the region, which is approximately 99% of all mercury produced from …

Metal Exposure In A Benthic Macroinvertebrate, Hydropsyche Californica, Related To Mine Drainage In The Sacramento River, Daniel J. Cain, James L. Carter, Steven V. Fend, Samuel N. Luoma, Charles N. Alpers, Howard E. Taylor

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A biomonitoring technique was employed to complement studies of metal transport in the upper Sacramento River affected by acid mine drainage. Metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, and Zn) were determined in a resident invertebrate, Hydropsyche californica (Insecta: Trichoptera), and streambed sediments (<62 >μm) to assess metal contamination within a 111-km section of the river downstream of the mining area. Metals in H. californica also were interpreted to be broadly indicative of metal exposure in fish. Total Hg was determined in the whole body of the insect, whereas Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn were additionally separated into …
