Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield

This investigation examined the utility of three recombinant protein-expression systems (COS cells, insect cells and insect larvae) to cost-effectively produce biologically active human butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). It was determined that baculovirus-infected insect cells (Sf9 and High 5) expressed 3.5- and 8.2-fold, respectively, more active enzyme than COS-7 cells. Baculovirus-infected cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) insect larvae produced over 26 times more than High 5 cells ; in fact, one baculovirus-infected insect larva provided more active protein than 100 ml of insect cell culture. Despite the prominent contemporary phenomenon of globalization, it has proven difficult for globalists to converge and harmonize fundamental differences in values and belief systems, both within and across national boundaries. Thus, notwithstanding the efforts of human rights advocates and international regime architects, there is as yet no universal consensus as to the existence of a "set of rights and duties that cannot be derogated in the interests of nationality, race, religion, ethnicity or other competing claimants upon individual and group loyalty." In 1993, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology became a member of the Foundation Coalition, one of six EngineeringEducation Coalitions sponsored by grants from the National Science Foundation. Experimental curricula were created, including the Integrated First Year Curriculum in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (IFYCSEM) and the Sophomore Engineering Program (SEC). In this study, students who completed one or more of the Foundation Coalition curricula were placed in four-member teams and comparatively evaluated using qualitative research techniques for their abilities to work in teams, to solve complex, open-ended problems and to utilize technology. Soil temperature controls plant growth and many related processes in the soil. A mulch or crop residue covering the soil may alter soil temperatures significantly. Available simulation models often lack experimental data for the mulch thermal conductivity and its dependence on air velocity. The apparent thermal conductivity (k) of wheat straw, pine straw, tire chips, dry sandy soil, and the thermal resistance of Bermudagrass sods were measured using a guarded hot plate at air velocities between 0 and 5 m/s. For all mulch materials, k ranged between 0.1 and 0.6 W m^–1 °C^–1, and increased …

Crop residues or mulches affect soil temperature influencing plant growth and related processes in the soil. A hot/cold plate combination was used to quantify heat transfer through several common dry test mulch materials (rubber chips, pine straw, wheat straw) and identify and quantify heat transfer mechanisms with the goal of modeling apparent thermal conductivity of the mulch. Mulch material bulk densities ranged from near 0 kg/m³ to 33 kg/m³ , mulch thickness ranged from 61 mm to 140 mm and test temperatures ranged from 20°C to 45°C. Using data from a 50-state survey of policies, state case study analyses, the 1993-94 Schools and Staffing Surveys (SASS), and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), this study examines the ways in which teacher qualifications and other school inputs are related to student achievement across states. The findings of both the qualitative and quantitative analyses suggest that policy investments in the quality of teachers may be related to improvements in student performance. ...
