Western tentiform leafminer populations can vary tremendously between years or even between generations within a single year. Increasing resistance to organophosphate insecticides and variable effectiveness of at least six parasitic wasp species that attack the leafminer can influence the population size.

Direct And Indirect Parametrization Of A Localized Model For The Mountain Pine Beetle — Lodgepole Pine System, Zy Biesinger, James Powell, Barbara Bentz, Jesse Logan

The dynamic interaction between mountain pine beetles (MPB) and one of its hosts is reviewed briefly. The ‘local’ projection of a partial differential equation model describing this interaction is employed in model parameter estimation. Methods and assumptions for estimating non-fitted parameter values are given. Assigning values to non-fitted parameters, direct and indirect parametrization techniques are employed to estimate remaining parameter values. The indirect method is quickly and easily applied to many data sets but requires some assumptions and model simplifications. The direct method requires fewer assumptions but is computationally intensive. The results of these two techniques are compared and evaluated.

A mechanistic simulation model of organic matter accumulation for a developing fen/raised bog complex in Ireland is presented. Parameter/variable values have been primarily drawn from the published literature. The development of the theoretical considerations of fen peat as a substratum to a raised bog is evaluated using the model. Terrestrialization is the pathway of hydroseral succession. The conceptual model treats peat growth as the accumulation of a series of parcels comprising both a labile and a non-labile component. The fen phase of the model uses a discrete description of organic matter accumulation while the raised bog phase uses a continuous …

The Creative Writer: An Examination Of Early Childhood Environment, Psychopathology, And Personality Traits, Cynthia I. Hagan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The early childhood environment, the pathology, and the personality traits of non-eminent creative writers were compared to those of non-creative artists. The stated issues were examined using a thirty-item, forced choice questionaire. The results indicated that the non-creative writer group experienced more early childhood trauma than did the non-creative artist group. The findings are congruent with previous research and supports the position that early childhood environment plays a significant role in the development of creativity.

On February 17, 1999, Avista Corporation filed an application for relicense of the existing 231-megawatt Cabinet Gorge and 466-megawatt Noxon Rapids projects located on the Clark Fork River in Idaho and Montana. Avista Corporation's proposed relicensing alternative for these two projects includes a comprehensive settlement agreement that was developed through the use of the Commission's Alternative Licensing Procedures and a collaborative approach during prefiling consultation. As part of the settlement agreement, Avista Corporation is proposing to use an adaptive management approach to implement the various protection, mitigation, and enhancement measures. The long-term cooling history of the Earth's biosphere implies a temperature constraint on the timing of major events in biologic evolution, e.g., emergence of cyanobacteria, eucaryotes and Metazoa apparently occurred at times when temperatures were near their upper growth limits. Could biospheric cooling also have been a necessary condition for the emergence of veterbrates and their encephalization? The upper temperature limit for vertebrate growth is about 10 degrees below the limit for Metazoa (50 degrees C). Heterothermy followed by full homeothermy was likely a necessary condition for greater encephalization because of the energy requirement of larger brains. The temperature differential …

Prescribed burning is a common method to eliminate sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) and has been suggested as a tool to enhance the habitat of sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Effects of this practice on sage grouse have not been evaluated rigorously. We studied effects of prescribed fire on lek (traditional breeding display areas) attendance by male sage grouse occupying low-precipitation (<26 cm) sagebrush habitats in south- eastern Idaho from 1986 through 1994. During the preburn period (1986-89), average declines for male attendance were 48% and 46% for treatment and control leks, respectively. Lek counts were similar for treatment and control leks during the preburn years (G-test, 0.25>P>0.10). During the postburn period (1990-94), male attendance at treatment leks declined 90% and control leks declined 63%. Although declines were similar between treatment and control leks during the preburn period, postburn declines were greater for treatment …

Botulism is a potentially lethal disease caused by one of seven homologous neurotoxic proteins usually produced by the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. This neuromuscular disorder occurs through an exquisite series of molecular events, ultimately ending with the arrest of acetylcholine release and hence, flaccid paralysis. The development of vaccines that protect against botulism dates back to the 1940s. Currently, a pentavalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotypes A-E and a separate monovalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotype F are available as Investigational New Drugs.
