The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Constructing An Artificial Wetland For Burra-Burra Creek In Ducktown Tennessee, Ileana M. Speer Mar 2000

The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Constructing An Artificial Wetland For Burra-Burra Creek In Ducktown Tennessee, Ileana M. Speer

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Copper Hill Basin area in Polk County, Tennessee has been severely impacted by more than a century of mining. The water found in the streams in this area is polluted with dissolved metals and sulfates. Burra-Burra Creek is one of the various waterways impacted and is located within the 130 km2 area of deserted mines in the Copper Basin. This stream is fed from runoff and mine seepage; the stream is acidic and the metal concentration is high in comparison to the concentrations in other streams in the immediate area. The use of constructed wetlands to treat acidic mine …

A Summer Survey Of The Birds At Two Eastern Nebraska Wetlands, Kristine T. Phipps Mar 2000

A Summer Survey Of The Birds At Two Eastern Nebraska Wetlands, Kristine T. Phipps

Biology Faculty Publications

This study compares the avian species diversity at two eastern Nebraska wetlands that differ in their relative isolation from an urban environment. Birds were surveyed by the point Count method twice weekly at each site during June of 1998. Diversity was measured using species richness and species evenness. The percentage of bird species observed that depend on wetlands for breeding was also compared. Results suggest that both species richness and evenness, as determined by the Shannon-Wiener index, were higher at the wetland located in a network of other marsh areas and agricultural land than at the suburban wetland. Immigration of …

Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson Mar 2000

Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article explores the intersection of law, morality, and subjectivity through the lens of Slavoj Žižek's philosophical works, particularly in the context of the impeachment of President Clinton. It argues that the public's negative reaction to the impeachment was rooted in a fear of encountering "diabolical evil," a concept drawn from Kantian philosophy, where law and morality coincide perfectly. This form of evil is more terrifying than ordinary evil because it is committed without pathological motives, purely for the sake of duty.

Characterization Of North American Armillaria Species By Nuclear Dna Content And Rflp Analysis, Mee-Sook Kim, Ned Klopfenstein, Geral I. Mcdonald, Kathiravetpillai Arumuganathan, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Twenty-six isolates representing nine North American Armillaria species were investigated with flow cytometry and RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) analyses to determine their nuclear DNA content and RFLP profile. Three putatively diploid isolates of A. ostoyae, A. gemina, A. calvescens, A. sinapina, A. mellea, A. gallica, A. nabsnona, and North American Biological Species (NABS) X were analyzed, and two putatively diploid isolates of NABS XI also were analyzed. Nuclear DNA contents of Armillaria species were 0.11-0.17 pg per nucleus (55-84 X 10" bp/C), depending on species. Among the nine North American Armillaria species tested, A. ostoyae, A. gemirza, and …

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2000

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.

Rainey V. Chever: Expanding A Natural Father's Right To Inherit From His Illegitimate Child, Elizabeth G. Long

Mercer Law Review

In Rainey v. Chever, the Georgia Supreme Court held unconstitutional section 53-2-4(b)(2) of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A."), which required that before a natural father could inherit through his illegitimate child, the natural father had to either openly treat the child as his own or provide support for the child. Coming up only one vote short, the United States Supreme Court denied plaintiff's petition for writ of certiorari. The three dissenting Justices declared their belief that Georgia's statute addressed the "alarming trend" of outof- wedlock births.5 Furthermore, the dissenting Justices asserted that because of the "substantial tension" …

The Advantages Of Clonal Integration Under Different Ecological Conditions: A Community-Wide Test, Steven C. Pennings, Ragan M. Callaway Mar 2000

The Advantages Of Clonal Integration Under Different Ecological Conditions: A Community-Wide Test, Steven C. Pennings, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The "connectedness" of clonal plants has been shown to promote survival and growth in a variety of single-species, single-factor studies, but experiments comparing the relative advantages of clonality across multiple habitats and species are rare, raising the concern that generalizations about the benefits of clonality might be biased by the particular species or habitat studied. We studied the importance of clonal integration in southeastern USA salt marsh plants, using all six of the common clonal species in the community, by following the success of intact and severed clonal fragments invading three habitat treatments. Clonal integration was most important for growth …

Life Stage Simulation Analysis: Estimating Vital-Rate Effects On Population Growth For Conservation, M. J. Wisdom, L. Scott Mills, D. F. Doak Mar 2000

Life Stage Simulation Analysis: Estimating Vital-Rate Effects On Population Growth For Conservation, M. J. Wisdom, L. Scott Mills, D. F. Doak

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

We developed a simulation method, known as life-stage simulation analysis (LSA) to measure potential effects of uncertainty and variation in vital rates on population growth (lambda) for purposes of species conservation planning. Under LSA, we specify plausible or hypothesized levels of uncertainty, variation, and covariation in vital rates fur a given population. We use these data under resampling simulations to establish random combinations of vital rates for a large number of matrix replicates and finally summarize results from the matrix replicates to estimate potential effects of each vital rate on lambda in a probability-based context. Estimates of potential effects are …

Modeling Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Power/Ground Layers, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak Mar 2000

Modeling Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Power/Ground Layers, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Signal transitioning through layers on vias are very common in multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current must switch from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in noise on the power bus that can lead to signal integrity, as well as EMI problems. Numerical methods, such as the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), Moment of Methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method, were employed herein to study this …

Methyl-Substituted Dispiro-1,2,4,5-Tetraoxanes:  Correlations Of Structural Studies With Antimalarial Activity, Kevin J. Mccollough, James K. Wood, Walter Reed Army Institute Of Research, Yuxiang Dong, Jonathan L. Vennerstrom

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Two tetramethyl-substituted dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes (7,8,15,16-tetraoxadispiro[5.2.5.2]- hexadecanes) 3 and 4 were designed as metabolically stable analogues of the dimethylsubstituted dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxane prototype WR 148999 (2). For a positive control we selected the sterically unhindered tetraoxane 5 (7,8,15,16-tetraoxadispiro[5.2.5.2]hexadecane), devoid of any substituents. Tetraoxanes 3 and 4 were completely inactive in contrast to tetraoxanes 2 and 5. We hypothesize that the two inactive tetraoxanes possess sufficient steric hindrance about the tetraoxane ring due to the two additional axial methyl groups to prevent their activation to presumed parasiticidal carbon radicals by inhibiting electron transfer from heme or other iron(II) species. For each of the tetraoxanes 2-4, …

Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara Mar 2000

Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara

CCPO Publications

A time-dependent, size-structured, bioenergetically based model was developed to examine the growth dynamics of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba 2 to 60 mm in size. The metabolic processes included in the model are ingestion, a baseline respiration, respiratory losses due to feeding and digestion, and an activity-based respiration factor. The total of these processes, net production, was used as the basis for determining the growth or shrinkage of individuals. Size-dependent parameterizations for the metabolic processes were constructed from field and laboratory measurements. Environmental effects were included through time series of pelagic phytoplankton concentration that were derived from data sets collected west …
