Genetic Diversity And Reproductive Biology In Warea Carteri (Brassicaceae), A Narrowly Endemic Florida Scrub Annual, Margaret E.K. Evans, Rebecca W. Dolan, Eric S. Menges, Doria R. Gordon

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Carter's mustard (Warea carteri) is an endangered, fire-stimulated annual endemic of the Lake Wales Ridge, Florida, USA. This species is characterized by seed banks and large fluctuations in plant numbers, with increases occurring in postdisturbance habitat. We investigated the mating system, patterns of isozyme variation, and effective population sizes of W. carteri to better understand its population biology and to comment on reserve designs and management proposals relevant to this species. Warea carteri is self-compatible and autogamous, and probably largely selfing. Measures of genetic variation in W. carteri were lower than values reported for species with similar ecological …

Reports

This is the thirteenth edition of the "State of Tampa Bay" Report. It has been prepared by the Agency on Bay Management and funded by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. The Report's primary purpose is to inform our legislators and the general public about the projects and programs underway around Tampa Bay and in its watershed. Summaries of programs of Baywide significance have been contributed by our most important Bay stewards. Reports from several organizations and agencies recap their activities in 1999 and describe planned projects for 2000. Many of these are actually updates, as these entities have contributed …

The Flight Song Display Of The Cassin's Sparrow: Form And Possible Function, James T. Anderson, Warren C. Conway Mar 2000

The Flight Song Display Of The Cassin's Sparrow: Form And Possible Function, James T. Anderson, Warren C. Conway

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We studied the flight song display behavior of male Cassin's Span-ows (Aimophila cassinii) during the early breeding season. Data were collected on randomly selected male Cassin's Span-ows occun-ing in a mixed honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa )-grassland in the Southern High Plains of West Texas. Cassin's Span-ows performed 100% of perched songs and initiated 97.8% of the flight song displays from the upper parts of mesquite trees. When performing flight song displays Cassin's Span-ows flew an average distance of 8.1 mat an average height of 3.6 m, and rotated an average of 96° from take-off to -landing. Males were more likely …

Periphyton Production On Wood And Sediment: Substratum-Specific Response To Laboratory And Whole-Lake Nutrient Manipulations, Yvonne Vadeboncoeur, David M. Lodge Mar 2000

Periphyton Production On Wood And Sediment: Substratum-Specific Response To Laboratory And Whole-Lake Nutrient Manipulations, Yvonne Vadeboncoeur, David M. Lodge

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Substratum heterogeneity is a large source of variability in periphyton production, but the influence of substratum on periphyton response to experimental manipulations is rarely measured. Using laboratory and whole-lake experiments, we compared area-specific primary production of periphyton on wood (epixylon) and sediment (epipelon), and tested whether periphyton on the 2 substrata responded differently to water-column fertilization. In the laboratory, natural periphyton assemblages on wood or sediment were exposed to 1 of 6 treatments in a fully factorial (light [250, 70, or 10 μmol m−2 s−1] × nutrient [control or + N and P]) experiment. We measured 14 …

Range Expansion Of Fish Crow In Northeast Texas, Matt White Mar 2000

Range Expansion Of Fish Crow In Northeast Texas, Matt White

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

The Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus) is found primarily in the southeastern United States, along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, from Texas to Massachusetts, and inland along major waterways, rivers, swamps and lakes (AOU 1998). In the past several decades, particularly since 1960, the population has increased markedly, especially along inland waterways and rivers, but also north along the Atlantic seaboard (Potter et al 1980, Veit and Peterson 1993). This range expansion has been dramatic, and is apparently still underway as evidenced by the fact that they continue to increase in locations where they were unknown as recently as five years …
