An Nih- And Nsf -Funded Program In Biological Research For Community College Students, Thomas P. Arnold, Frances A. Frierson, Neil Sebacher Jr.

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In a program supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, selected students in biology courses at Valencia Community College actively pursue the scientific method in a series of laboratory exercises. Results are then published as reports written in the format of a scientific paper. Faculty from the disciplines of biology and English composition evaluate students' work. Students are required to collaborate and present findings as if they are researchers. Students interested in science careers can subsequently enroll in a research training course, upon completion of which they are eligible for a summer internship …

The Platte As A Prairie River: A Response To Johnson And Boettcher, Paul J. Currier, Craig A. Davis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Johnson and Boettcher (2000) question the status of the presettlement Platte River as a prairie river, and they argue that it was "a wooded river traversing a prairie landscape." Here we review evidence in support of the prairie river concept, suggesting the channels of the Platte were predominantly open and largely absent of trees. Direct support for a prairie river is found in the detailed map drawn by Lieutenant Woodbury in locating the site for Fort Kearny in 1847. Woodbury showed a thin strip of timber, located in an area that appeared to be elevated above the influence of active …

Use Of Fatty Acid Stores By Larvae And Adults Of A Nebraska Salt Marsh Tiger Beetle, Cicindela Togata Globicollis Casey, W. Wyatt Hoback, R. L. Rana, D. W. Stanley Apr 2000

Use Of Fatty Acid Stores By Larvae And Adults Of A Nebraska Salt Marsh Tiger Beetle, Cicindela Togata Globicollis Casey, W. Wyatt Hoback, R. L. Rana, D. W. Stanley

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Tiger beetles are common predators in open habitats throughout the Great Plains, including the eastern salt marshes. Adult tiger beetles are active searchers that attack and eat small insects. By contrast, their larvae are sit-and-wait predators that form permanent burrows and depend on prey moving within striking distance. We hypothesized that adults and larvae of the tiger beetle, Cicindela togata globicollis Casey, would differ in their utilization of lipid (fat) energy reserves, such as fatty acids, based on differences in the likelihood of starvation. To investigate this, we determined the fatty acid profiles from larvae and adult tiger beetles. We …

Great Plains Research, Volume 10, Number 1, Spring 2000 – Critical Dialogue, Svata M. Louda

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

With the following articles, we are pleased to initiate a new section, called "Critical Dialogue," to be published whenever a manuscript is accepted that we think addresses a particularly important, potentially controversial issue in the Great Plains. The purpose of the section will be to present alternative perspectives on such issues, to inform our readers and to stimulate rational discussion of the data available for science-based policy and management decisions. Thus, we will invite and peer-review a reasoned response to the stimulating manuscript, and we will provide the original author(s) with an opportunity for rebuttal to that response.

Production Agriculture Versus The Environment: The Role Of Statistics, Linda J. Young Apr 2000

Production Agriculture Versus The Environment: The Role Of Statistics, Linda J. Young

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Corn production in the United States provides an example of the agricultural changes that have occurred in recent times. Because all such agricultural activity potentially can affect the environment to some degree, the challenge is now to quantify and understand those effects. Although monitoring of the environment for such effects is not new, the procedures often fall short of providing reliable quantitative data. One example is the inconsistent, incomplete, and unreliable information currently available to assess US surface water quality and trends in that quality. The utilization of probability-based sampling designs could playa vital role in the improvement of information …

Influence Of Past Interactions On The Prairie Today: A Hypothesis, Kathleen H. Keeler Apr 2000

Influence Of Past Interactions On The Prairie Today: A Hypothesis, Kathleen H. Keeler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Past conditions in North American prairies have left behind animals and plants whose features were shaped by interactions, some of which no longer exist. For example, pronghorns are fast runners but there are now no fast predators to chase them. Similarly, bison activity structured grasslands, but few prairie reserves now have bison. Here I draw attention to possible cases where ecological patterns are best explained by conditions not present in the modern prairie and propose that such outcomes may be more important than presently thought. My aim is to stimulate a reevaluation of prairie organisms and the effect of their …

Multiple Source Pools And Dispersal Barriers For Galápagos Plant Species Distribution, J. Alan Yeakley, John F. Weishampel Apr 2000

Multiple Source Pools And Dispersal Barriers For Galápagos Plant Species Distribution, J. Alan Yeakley, John F. Weishampel

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

We reexamined geographic factors explaining the number of plant species on islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. We hypothesized that plant species richness (S) was related to the number of source pools and that plant species dispersal preferentially followed direct, oceanic pathways. To test different dispersal pathways from multiple source pools, the total number of islands within a given dispersal radius (i) was posed as the sum of the number of line-of-sight islands (Ci) and of the number of islands without line-of sight connection (Bi). In partial regression analyses, controlling for nearest island area (A2) …

Wind-Forced Reversing Jets In The Western Equatorial Pacific, Megan F. Cronin, Michael J. Mcphaden, Robert H. Weisberg Apr 2000

Wind-Forced Reversing Jets In The Western Equatorial Pacific, Megan F. Cronin, Michael J. Mcphaden, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Upper-ocean zonal currents in the western equatorial Pacific are remarkably variable, changing direction both with time and depth. As a part of the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment, an enhanced monitoring array of moorings measured the upper-ocean velocity, temperature, salinity, and, surface meteorological conditions in the western equatorial Pacific for two years (March 1992-April 1994). Data from this array are used to evaluate the zonal momentum balance. Although nonlinear terms (zonal. meridional, and vertical advection) were at times large, reversing jets were primarily due to an interplay between wind forcing and compensating pressure gradients. In the …

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr Apr 2000

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr

Publications and Research

In most studies of the net ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 (NEE) using tower-based eddy covariance( EC) systems it has been assumed that advection is negligible. In this study we use a scalar conservation budget method to estimate the contribution of advection to NEE measurements from a very tall tower in northern Wisconsin. We examine data for June-August 1997. Measured NEEo, calculated as the sum of the EC flux plus the rate of change of storage below the EC measurement level, is expected to be constant with measurement height, and we take the differences between levels as a measure of …

No Time Is The Right Time: The Supreme Court's Use Of Ripeness To Block Judicial Review Of Forrest Plans For Environmental Plaintiff's In Ohio Forestry Ass'n V. Sierra Club, Eacata Desiree Gregory

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Comment examines the Supreme Court decision that resolved the split in the circuits over the justiciability of Land and Resource Management Plans, or Forest Plans, which the Forest Service prepares. In Ohio Forestry Ass'n v. Sierra Club, the Court denied the Sierra Club's challenge to the Forest Plan for Wayne National Forest, holding that the issues were not ripe for review absent site-specific, on-the-ground activities. Gregory argues that the Court's decision reflects the continuing use of justiciability doctrines, such as ripeness, to restrict environmental plaintiffs' access to the courts. She maintains that Forest Plans are final agency actions …

Hegemony, Coercion, And Their Teeth-Gritting Harmony: A Commentary On Power, Culture, And Sexuality In Franco's Spain, Ratna Kapur, Tayyab Mahmud

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Professor Gema Pérez-Sánchez's article, Franco's Spain, Queer Nation? focuses on the last years of Francisco Franco's fascist dictatorship and the early years of the young Spanish democracy, roughly from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. The centerpiece of her article looks at how, through law, Franco's regime sought to define and contain what it considered dangerous social behavior, particularly homosexuality. She traces how the state not only exercised hegemonic control over definitions of gender and sexuality, but also established well-defined roles for women and drew clear lines between what constituted legitimate and illegitimate sexualities, namely, the line between heterosexuality …

FOCUS on Boise State

The "real world" means different things to different people. To many in the Boise State community, it refers to the "real education" students receive because of the university's location in the state capital as well as its proximity to corporate headquarters, high-tech businesses, cultural centers, major hospitals and a vast expanse of wilderness. But not everyone agrees that the university's "Real Education for the Real World" slogan is an apt depiction. In this issue, FOCUS looks at the slogan's message and highlights some programs that do provide real-world experiences. Cover illustration by Bill Carman.
