Photodegradation Of Pcbs In Natural Waters, Adriana R. Nicolaescu Apr 2000

Photodegradation Of Pcbs In Natural Waters, Adriana R. Nicolaescu

Masters Theses

PCBs are widely distributed in the environment and they are biologically refractory and toxic compounds. There is great interest in understanding their fate in the environment, and also for finding safe and effective degradation methods.

This study is concerned with the photodegradation of four PCB congeners: PCB 5, PCB 18, PCB 77, PCB 128 in natural waters. Natural waters contain humic substances which can greatly influence the environmental fate of the PCBs. The different degradation of the four congeners was studied in standardized systems and in humic acid or nitrate solutions, under environmental conditions. DMDE and Methoxyclor (whose environmental half-lifetimes …

Aquaculture Performance Comparison Of Sunshine Bass, Palmetto Bass, And White Bass, James B. Rudacille, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

Aquaculture performance of phase II and phase III sunshine bass (a female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis), palmetto bass (a female striped bass × male white bass), and white bass were evaluated in separate 12-week yield trials conducted in indoor recirculating-water systems. Phase II sunshine bass, palmetto bass, and white bass had mean initial weights of 40.0 g, 39.7 g, and 41.0 g, respectively. A diet containing 40.2% crude protein (CP) was fed to fish twice daily at a rate of 3% body weight/d. At the end of the trial, sunshine bass and white …

Holographic Optical Tweezers: Development And Analysis Of The First Holodeck Prototype, Matthew T. Dearing '00

Honors Projects

Tightly focused light can be used to non-invasively trap and manipulate micro-objects, a technique called "optical tweezing." By utilizing the large field gradients present in a focused laser beam, micro-particles-including biological specimens and many other materials-can become confined in all three dimensions. While optical tweezing has existed for over a decade, it has generally been limited to trapping one or two particles at a time. We have developed a technique that uses laser light to assemble large numbers of micro-particles in a highly controllable way. Here we describe, for the first time, the complete implementation of holographic optical tweezer arrays …

Rationality In Law And Economics Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder Apr 2000

Rationality In Law And Economics Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

Jeanne L. Schroeder critiques Richard Posner's conception of rationality in law and economics, arguing that his broad and evolving definition dilutes the concept, rendering it too vague and analytically weak. She advocates for a more nuanced approach that integrates psychological insights and acknowledges the limitations of traditional economic models. Schroeder emphasizes the need for empirical accuracy and theoretical rigor, challenging Posner's dismissal of behavioral economics and his reliance on evolutionary biology for explanations of irrational behavior.
