Asymmetric Requirements For A Rab Gtpase And Snare Proteins In Fusion Of Copii Vesicles With Acceptor Membranes, Xiaochun Cao, Charles Barlowe Apr 2000

Asymmetric Requirements For A Rab Gtpase And Snare Proteins In Fusion Of Copii Vesicles With Acceptor Membranes, Xiaochun Cao, Charles Barlowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

Soluble NSF attachment protein receptor (SNARE) proteins are essential for membrane fusion in transport between the yeast ER and Golgi compartments. Subcellular fractionation experiments demonstrate that the ER/Golgi SNAREs Bos1p, Sec22p, Bet1p, Sed5p, and the Rab protein, Ypt1p, are distributed similarly but localize primarily with Golgi membranes. All of these SNARE proteins are efficiently packaged into COPII vesicles and suggest a dynamic cycling of SNARE machinery between ER and Golgi compartments. Ypt1p is not efficiently packaged into vesicles under these conditions. To determine in which membranes protein function is required, temperature-sensitive alleles of BOS1, BET1, SED5, SLY1, and YPT1 that …

Of Law, Lawlessness, And Sovereignty : Multinational Peacekeeping And International Law, Antje Mays Apr 2000

Of Law, Lawlessness, And Sovereignty : Multinational Peacekeeping And International Law, Antje Mays

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Laws of war have been carefully defined by individual nations’ own codes of law as well as by supranational bodies. Yet the international scene has seen an increasing movement away from traditionally declared war toward multinational peacekeeping missions geared at containing local conflicts when perceived as potential threats to their respective regions’ political stability. While individual nations’ laws governing warfare presuppose national sovereignty, the multinational nature of peacekeeping scenarios can blur the lines of command structures, soldiers’ national loyalties, occupational jurisdiction, and raise profound questions as to which countries’ moral sense/governmental system is to be the one upheld. Historically increasingly …

The Age Of The Woolly Rhino From Dream Cave, Derbyshire, Uk, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Derek C. Ford

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Dream Cave woolly rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, is a "classic" specimen of a "cold-stage" fossil fauna from central England. The find was illustrated and described by Dean William Buckland in his seminal tome Reliquiae Diluvianae (1823) during the first half of the 19th century, and made a significant contribution to the development of Buckland's views on the origin of extinct and extirpated fossil vertebrates. The report presents the first, albeit indirect, radiometric dates on the specimen, and argues that the animal fell into the cave just before 37,000 years BP, during the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 Interstadial (41 …

Direct Instruction In Group Dynamics And Small Group Communication Enhances Collaborative Group Learning, Marie Kraus Apr 2000

Direct Instruction In Group Dynamics And Small Group Communication Enhances Collaborative Group Learning, Marie Kraus

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In this paper, I explored whether directed instruction in small group communication skills and group dynamics can make collaborative group learning more effective in my classroom. In my experience, I have found that educators constantly encourage students to perform tasks in a competitive individualistic environment. Teachers ask them to work alone; they set up reward systems where cooperation among students is discouraged and promote "acceptable" not outstanding work. Unfortunately, teachers are almost setting up students for fai lure in the real world. The environment that teachers create within the classroom does not represent the world that people live in where …

Variation And Heritability Of Phenology In The Fungus Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi On Blueberry, Jeffery S. Lehman, Peter V. Oudemans Apr 2000

Variation And Heritability Of Phenology In The Fungus Monilinia Vaccinii-Corymbosi On Blueberry, Jeffery S. Lehman, Peter V. Oudemans

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

The germination of field-collected pseudosclerotia and the development of apothecia from eight New Jersey populations of the mummy berry fungus Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi were evaluated under controlled conditions in the greenhouse. Development data for apothecia were used to describe the timing of apothecium formation and to estimate broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities of fungal phenology. Mean development times for the formation of apothecia ranged from 35.4 to 54.7 days. The mean development times for populations collected from early-season cv. Weymouth ranged from 35.4 to 39.6 days and were significantly shorter than the development times for three of the four populations collected from …
