Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer Apr 2000

Reporting Bias In Bird Strikes At John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, 1979-1998, Scott C. Barras, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird-aircraft strike databases have been used to identify, monitor, and manage bird strike problems in the USA nationally and at individual airports. Up to 75% of all bird strikes that occur in the USA may not be reported by pilots or airport control tower personnel. Recent studies have suggested that individual airports may improve their strike reporting rates by having personnel regularly search runways for the remains of birds struck by aircraft. We analyzed a 20-year dataset of runway searches from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York to determine the degree of bias in reports of strikes …

Photosynthetic Acclimation Of White Spruce (Picea Glauca) To Canopy Microhabitats, Kathleen Doran Apr 2000

Photosynthetic Acclimation Of White Spruce (Picea Glauca) To Canopy Microhabitats, Kathleen Doran

Biological Sciences

Slow growing white spruce (Picea glauca) seedlings and saplings often become established early in succession and mature through several succession seres. During early succession, spruce often germinate in mineral soils and become established in alder (Alnus tenuifolia or A. crispa) thickets, with the potential for both competitive and facilitative relationships. Although competitive and facilitative plant interactions are often identified by changes in the growth or density of the interacting species, the result of the interaction will depend upon the individual plant's physiological acclimation to abiotic changes caused by neighboring plants. This study analyzes components of photosynthesis to provide information about …

Infrared Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement Of Gas Phase Radicals In C₄F Discharges For Plasma Model Validation, Karla Waters Apr 2000

Infrared Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement Of Gas Phase Radicals In C₄F Discharges For Plasma Model Validation, Karla Waters

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The etching characteristics of oxide and photoresist thin films in C4F8 discharges in an inductively coupled GEC Reference cell have been determined. Infrared diode laser absorption spectroscopy (IR-DLAS) measured absolute concentrations of CFx radicals in C4F8 discharges and correlated their behavior to the oxide etch process. Additionally, Langmuir probe and OES data were collected to aid in characterizing the plasma and the oxide/photoresist etch processes.

A central composite design of experiment was employed. The factors were source power, chuck bias power, and total pressure. The source power varied from 200 to 500 W, …

Test Of Intron Predictions Reveals Novel Splice Sites, Alternatively Spliced Mrnas And New Introns In Meiotically Regulated Genes Of Yeast, Carrie Davis, Leslie Grate, Marc Spingola, Manuel Ares

Biology Department Faculty Works

Correct identification of all introns is necessary to discern the protein-coding potential of a eukaryotic genome. The existence of most of the spliceosomal introns predicted in the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae remains unsupported by molecular evidence. We tested the intron predictions for 87 introns predicted to be present in non-ribosomal protein genes, more than a third of all known or suspected introns in the yeast genome. Evidence supporting 61 of these predictions was obtained, 20 predicted intron sequences were not spliced and six predictions identified an intron-containing region but failed to specify the correct splice sites, yielding a successful prediction …

Perceived Effectiveness Of Portfolio Assessment For Pre-First And First Grade Teachers In Pemberton Township School District, Ursula M. Csercsevits

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to discover the effects of portfolio assessment as perceived by pre-first and first grade teachers using community based action research. The outcome of this study is data that assists in evaluating the continued use of portfolio assessment as it exists, or determining the need for adjustment to the practice. The sample group consisted of forty-two pre-first and first grade teachers currently using portfolio assessment. Data collection of this action research study began with a questionnaire distributed to all members of the sample. The cycle of research continued with interviews, classroom observations and a review …

Optical Properties Of The Kara Sea, Donald R. Johnson, Vernon L. Asper, Thomas Mcclimans, Alan D. Weidemann

Faculty Publications

This study was motivated by the need to understand dispersion processes which affect the redistribution of nuclear wastes in the Arctic from dump sites in the Kara Sea and in the rivers which flow into the Kara Sea. We focus on vertical profiles of light beam transmission and fluorometry made over the delta region fronting the Ob and Yenisey Rivers and over the East Novaya Zemlya Trough (ENZT). The delta region fronting the Ob River Estuary contains a large repository of particles in a dense bottom nepheloid layer with a maximum centered similar to 100 km in front of the …

Dam Mitigation: Collaboration Or Confrontation? Take Your Pick: Clark Fork Projects Hydro Relicensing, Joseph Dos Santos, Tim Swant Apr 2000

Dam Mitigation: Collaboration Or Confrontation? Take Your Pick: Clark Fork Projects Hydro Relicensing, Joseph Dos Santos, Tim Swant

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

In the United States, privately owned hydroelectric facilities operate under fifty year licenses issued and administered by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The usual process of license renewal involves consternation, confrontation, and litigation, resulting in delayed environmental mitigation and damaged professional relationships. Faced with the upcoming relicensing of two large hydroelectric facilities in the year 2001, Avista Corporation (formally Washington Water Power Company) knew that there had to be a better way. In February of 1999, Avista Corporation filed a renewal application culminating seven years of environmental studies and consultation with state and federal agencies, tribes, local government, landowners, …

Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Plan: Clark Fork River Vnrp - Collaboration To Improve Water Quality, William H. Mcdowell Apr 2000

Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Plan: Clark Fork River Vnrp - Collaboration To Improve Water Quality, William H. Mcdowell

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Clark Fork River Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Program (VNRP) is a landmark 1998 agreement to reduce nutrient pollution in the Clark Fork River from Butte to the Flathead River confluence. The agreement allocates nutrient discharge into the river between three municipal wastewater treatment plants (Butte, Deer Lodge, and Missoula), one industrial discharger (Smurfit-Stone) and Missoula County (regulates many septic systems).

Excess nutrients and algae are among the most widespread problems in the basin. Nutrient reduction plans have also been developed for the Flathead basin and Lake Pend Oreille. The goal of the Clark Fork VNRP is to improve water quality …
