Water Quality Assessment For Northern Rockies Intermontane Basins, Lan H. Tornes

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Northern Rockies Intermontane Basins is one of 59 studies of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. The goals of the program are to (1) describe water-quality conditions for a large part of the nation's streams and aquifers, (2) describe water quality trends, and (3) identify factors affecting water quality. Stream water, bottom sediment, ground water, and fish tissue will be sampled; and stream ecology and habitat will be evaluated. Water quality will be related to ancillary factors.

The study area extends along the Continental Divide from Butte, Montana, to the Canadian border, and westward to …

Plant Materials Centers Provide Vegetative Solutions, Larry Holzworth, Dwight Tober, Dan Ogle

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Current land management practices are highly complex involving holistic approaches to achieve land health and environmental quality. Plants can be used to address today’s environmental problems. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides conservation planning, program administration, and technology transfer to private landowners. Plant Material Centers (PMCs), together with a multitude of partners, develop plant materials and provide technology regarding their use. To date, there are 484 cultivars and natural germplasms of improved plants that have been released by PMCs. A large number of these releases have been successfully incorporated into the commercial seed and plant production industry. Over 114 …

The River Benthos Record For Smurfit-Stone's Missoula Mill -- Nearly A Half-Century Of Clark Fork River Monitoring, David Rades Apr 2000

The River Benthos Record For Smurfit-Stone's Missoula Mill -- Nearly A Half-Century Of Clark Fork River Monitoring, David Rades

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Missoula Mill of Smurfit-Stone Container discharges treated process water to the Clark Fork River near Frenchtown, Montana. Annual monitoring (1956 - present) of macroinvertebrate indicated river quality, is an integral part of the Missoula Mill's environmental protection effort. Quantitative riffle benthos samples from ten sites (study reach = 22 miles) are taken during August. Impact is determined using control vs experimental comparisons of community descriptors including the biometrics subsets used in the calculation of the Montana Biological Integrity Index. Study results show significant background (upstream mill) enrichment in incremental amounts over the period 1960 through the late 1980's, presumably …

Bioassessment Of A Reclaimed Placer Mined Stream: Recovery Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities, Wease Bollman Apr 2000

Bioassessment Of A Reclaimed Placer Mined Stream: Recovery Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities, Wease Bollman

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The upper reaches of Elk Creek, Granite County, Montana, have been placer mined for more than 100 years. Recent efforts at restoring trout habitat in these reaches included reconstruction of portions of the stream channel, resulting in improved morphology, the return of surface flows in some areas, and introduction of riparian vegetation to denuded streambanks. Prior to reconstruction, In this study, biotic health of these reaches of Elk Creek was evaluated. A comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate communities and bioassessment metrics between reconstructed and control sites was made over three years, using a battery of bioassessment metrics shown to be reliable …

Biomarkers Of Heavy Metal Effects In Two Species Of Caddisfly Larvae From Clark Fork River, Montana: Stress Proteins (Hsp70) And Lysosomal Membrane Integrity, I. Werner, K. Broeg, Daniel Cain, W. Wallace, Michelle Hornberger, D. E. Hinton, Samuel Luoma Apr 2000

Biomarkers Of Heavy Metal Effects In Two Species Of Caddisfly Larvae From Clark Fork River, Montana: Stress Proteins (Hsp70) And Lysosomal Membrane Integrity, I. Werner, K. Broeg, Daniel Cain, W. Wallace, Michelle Hornberger, D. E. Hinton, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Potential sublethal effects of heavy metals in stream macroinvertebrates were examined with two cellular and biochemical biomarkers in larvae of two caddisflies indigenous to the Clark Fork River, Montana, - Hydropsyche spp. and Arctopsyche grandis. Stress proteins, in particular members of the HSP70 family, are involved in cellular protein homeostasis and repair, and are induced by a variety of stressors, which either damage cellular proteins directly or cause cells to synthesize aberrant proteins. Lysosomes are intracellular organelles that play key roles in the detoxification of both organic and inorganic xenobiotic compounds. Larvae of Hydropsyche spp. were collected from …

Overview Of The Flathead Lake Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Strategy (Vnrs), Scott Marshall Payne, Mark Holston Apr 2000

Overview Of The Flathead Lake Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Strategy (Vnrs), Scott Marshall Payne, Mark Holston

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

If you ask Montanans which five Montana lakes are the most important or valuable, invariably Flathead Lake is in the top three picks. The lake's size, beauty, recreation benefits, and excellent water quality increase local real estate values and make it a popular destination. However, few Montanans know that Flathead Lake currently does not meet State water quality standards (ARM 17.30.637 (1)(e)General Prohibitions), and is undergoing the eutrophication process at an accelerated rate. Excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) stimulate algal blooms and serious oxygen depletion of the deep waters. Extensive lake and stream water quality monitoring document that nonpoint source …

Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman Apr 2000

Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

A proposed method for the evaluation of macroinvertebrate bioassessment protocols is described in this study. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (Montana DEQ) uses a modification of US EPA’s Rapid Bioassessment Protocols for stream assessment and monitoring. These protocols use a battery of macroinvertebrate community descriptors, or metrics, as indicators of biotic health; the metrics are based upon tenets of ecological theory and field observations and remained largely untested for sensitivity to the effects of human activities.

To evaluate the metric battery in current use, 93 stream sites were sampled in the Montana Valley and Foothill Prairies ecoregion (which includes …

Survey Of Upper Rattlesnake Creek, A Trout-Spawning Tributary Of The Clark Fork River (Mt), For Tubifex Tubifex, Elizabeth Jomay Wyatt, Michael A. Gilbert, Willard O. Granath

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Rattlesnake Creek is a tributary of the Clark Fork River that flows through parts of western Montana and through Missoula. Currently, an effort is underway to increase spawning habitat for bull and westslope cutthroat trout in the Clark Fork drainage. One proposal in this effort includes the modification or removal of the Mountain Water Company dam on lower Rattlesnake Creek that currently blocks fish passage. The removal or modification of this dam would open miles of prime spawning habitat. However, the Clark Fork River is known to be contaminated with Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of salmonid whirling disease. …

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin Apr 2000

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin

Honors Theses

The current AIDS epidemic has changed the way we view the world as well as our society as a whole. Diseases have ravaged humanity since the dawn of time, so what makes AIDS so much different from every other disease encountered by man? One reason is its transmission method. We know that HIV passes from person to person via blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. Most people that suffer from this disease contract it during sex, during intravenous drug use, or during a blood transfusion. Early accounts of HIV disease occurred in minority groups, namely homosexual men. This may have bee …
