The Role Of Community Support Programs With Mothers And Fathers Who Are Mentally Ill, Deborah A. Hesli
The Role Of Community Support Programs With Mothers And Fathers Who Are Mentally Ill, Deborah A. Hesli
Theses and Graduate Projects
Although issues faced by adults with mental illness have been visible for centuries, the implications of mental illness on parenting have only recently been considered. Consequently, service providers in the mental health field have begun to examine their roles with these families, such as balancing the rights of the parent with disabilities with the vulnerabilities of the children. This study asked service providers in the mental health field about their roles working with parents with mental illness and their children. A questionnaire was completed by twenty-one Community Support Program staff working in an urban setting with parents with a mental …
Physical Factors Of Differentiation In Macrobenthic Communities Between Atoll Lagoons In The Central Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), Mehdi Adjeroud, Serge Andrefouet, Claude Payri, Joel Orempuller
Physical Factors Of Differentiation In Macrobenthic Communities Between Atoll Lagoons In The Central Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), Mehdi Adjeroud, Serge Andrefouet, Claude Payri, Joel Orempuller
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Nine atolls were characterized in order to understand how physical factors control the species composition, diversity, and abundance of macrobenthic (coral, mollusc, echinoderm, and algal) communities inside the lagoons. Only one region, the central part of Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia, was considered, in order to minimise the variation due to regional factors between regions. The lagoons investigated showed a gradient of physical factors, providing various landscape configurations. The physical factors were surface area, abundance of pinnacles, degree of hydrodynamic aperture, and relative importance of passes in this degree of aperture. Macrobenthic communities were characterized by low diversity and strong dominance …

Reinventing Medicaid: Hoosier Healthwise And Children's Health Insurance In Indiana, Judith D. Moore, Lisa Sprague
Reinventing Medicaid: Hoosier Healthwise And Children's Health Insurance In Indiana, Judith D. Moore, Lisa Sprague
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit explored the factors that have made Indiana so successful in enrolling children in its Medicaid and SCHIP plans under the brand name Hoosier Healthwise. Site visitors met with legislators and state officials to gain understanding of the genesis and development of Hoosier Healthwise and its aggressive outreach component. A panel of representatives from partner organizations engaged in enrolling children provided further insight into this process. The site visit participants traveled to observe enrollment and operations in both urban (Marion) and rural (Clay) county offices. They also met with health care executives at hospitals, clinics, and neighborhood health …
Univercity News (2000-04-17)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Community Sustainability Through Citizen Leadership, Wayne N. Monsen, Barbara A. Toren
Community Sustainability Through Citizen Leadership, Wayne N. Monsen, Barbara A. Toren
Theses and Graduate Projects
The origination of two projects, their development and implementation, described in this paper, illustrate a concept of non-partisan citizen leadership. The report begins with a discourse on the over-arching theme of community sustainability through discussions of our complex world and citizen participation in democracy. This leadership concept is embodied within the context of two projects, the Rural Community Leadership Project, and the Sustainability Forums Project.
Methodologies to examine community sustainability used by both projects described in this thesis were designed to foster proactive citizen leadership, which will help to plan their community's future. It provides for project participants at the …

Investigations Into Model Systems Of Neurodegeneration: Organotypic Brain Slice Culture And In Vivo Microdialysis, Kimberly Lara Clapp
Investigations Into Model Systems Of Neurodegeneration: Organotypic Brain Slice Culture And In Vivo Microdialysis, Kimberly Lara Clapp
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The mechanisms behind neurodegeneration in disease and injury have yet to be fully defined. Many in vitro and in vivo model systems, have been developed to investigate the mechanisms of neurotoxicity and its relation to human disease and injury. There are a few resounding connections between most types of neurological disorder; namely oxidative stress and inflammation. The glutamate receptor agonist, N-methyl-D-aspartate, can be used to imitate excitotoxicity during stroke as it overstimulates the glutamate receptor, leading to rises in intracellular calcium levels, which in turn lead to oxidative stress within the cell. Amyloid-beta protein (Abeta) a useful in many of …

Phytoremediation Strategies For Recalcitrant Chlorinated Organics, William Edwin Schnabel
Phytoremediation Strategies For Recalcitrant Chlorinated Organics, William Edwin Schnabel
Engineering
The purpose of the research was to investigate novel strategies for the phytoremediation of recalcitrant chlorinated organic soil contaminants. The recalcitrance of many chlorinated organics is related to chemical stability and bioavailability. Mycorrhizal fungi have the potential to enhance the degradation of such compounds through the action of lignolytic enzyme systems, and to increase the bioavailability of such compounds through increased root surface area and reach. Furthermore, the addition of surfactants has the potential to increase compound bioavailability via increased solubility. The organochlorine pesticide aldrin, and the polychlorinated biphenyl 3,3'4,4 '-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) were chosen as representative recalcitrant contaminants. Feltleaf willow …

Benzene And Toluene Mixing Ratios In Indoor Air Of Homes With Attached Garages And Measurement Of Respective Biomarkers Of Exposure And Ventilation Effects, Maggie Ann Isbell
Benzene And Toluene Mixing Ratios In Indoor Air Of Homes With Attached Garages And Measurement Of Respective Biomarkers Of Exposure And Ventilation Effects, Maggie Ann Isbell
Theses (Unassigned)
Benzene and toluene mixing ratios were measured in the indoor air of homes with attached garages for several seasons using a thermal desorption GC-FID sampling and analysis protocol (EPA T0-17). Benzene in the living area of these homes ranged from 1--72 ppbv and toluene ranged 3--111 ppbv. The garage levels of benzene ranged from 8--304 pbbv and the toluene levels ranged from 14--591 ppbv. Numerous experiments and a model support the hypothesis of a single source of toluene and benzene. Source strength estimate calculations supported the hypothesis that gasoline in the attached garage is the primary source of these compounds …
Ice -Wedge Networks And "Whale-Hole" Ponds In Frozen Ground, Lawrence J. Plug
Ice -Wedge Networks And "Whale-Hole" Ponds In Frozen Ground, Lawrence J. Plug
Theses (Unassigned)
The patterns of ice-wedge networks and of whale-hole ponds in frozen ground self-organize by strong interactions between pattern elements. Mechanisms for the consistent spacing (15--25 m) and orientation between ice wedges are examined in a model encapsulating the opening of fractures under a combination of thermally-induced tensile stress, stress reduction near open fractures, and heterogeneity of frozen ground and insulating snow. Modeled networks are similar to ice-wedge networks on the Espenberg coastal plain, Bering Land-Bridge National Park, Alaska, at the level of variation among Espenberg networks, as indicated by: (i) comparisons of distributions of relative orientation and spacing between wedges; …
