Evaluation Of Stomoxys Calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) Behavioral Response To Human And Related Odors In A Triple Cage Olfactometer With Insect Traps, Raul A. Alzogaray, David A. Carlson May 2000

Evaluation Of Stomoxys Calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) Behavioral Response To Human And Related Odors In A Triple Cage Olfactometer With Insect Traps, Raul A. Alzogaray, David A. Carlson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A triple cage olfactometer provided with insect traps was used for evaluating behavioral responses of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) females to human skin and breath, CO2, and L-lactic acid analogs. After demonstrating there were no significant differences caused by cage location or time of day, 3 sets of 3 olfactometer tests were performed in a day, every 2 h beginning at 0900 hours. When a human hand was used as attractant, the attraction (expressed as percentage of trapped flies) increased as a function of the time; an inverted U-shaped relationship between attractancy and air speed was observed; and variation …

The Relationship Between Erikson's Developmental Tasks And Children Identified As At-Risk, Michael Mcmaken May 2000

The Relationship Between Erikson's Developmental Tasks And Children Identified As At-Risk, Michael Mcmaken

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study evaluated task resolution for Erik so n's first four psychosocial stages, and overall psychosocial maturity, as predictors of risk in elementary school children Sample groups consisted of children already identified by their schools as being "at-risk," and children from the same schools identified as "not-at-risk'' Subjects completed a revised version of the Erikson Psychosocial Inventory Scale measuring trust, autonomy, initiative, and industry, as well as measures of self-esteem and school commitment. The not-at-risk group had substantially higher mean scores than the at-risk group in all the subscales. Correlation coefficients indicated strong relationships between psychosocial task resolution and predictors …

Escanaba Trough is the southernmost segment of the Gorda Ridge and is filled by sandy turbidites locally exceeding 500 m in thickness. New results from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 1037 and 1038 that include accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) C-14 dates and revised petrographic evaluation of the sediment provenance, combined with high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles, provide a lithostratigraphic framework for the turbidite deposits. Three fining-upward units of sandy turbidites from the upper 365 m at ODP Site 1037 can be correlated with sediment recovered at ODP Site 1038 and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) Site 35. Six AMS C-14 ages in …

On The Nature Of Norms: Biology, Morality, And The Disruption Of Order, Owen D. Jones May 2000

On The Nature Of Norms: Biology, Morality, And The Disruption Of Order, Owen D. Jones

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This essay discusses the legal implications of bio-behavioral underpinnings to norms, morality, and economic order. It first discusses the recent book "The Great Disruption: Human Nature and the Reconstitution of Social Order," in which Francis Fukuyama explores the importance of evolved human nature to the reconstruction of social order and a thriving economy. It then addresses the extent to which we can usefully view law-relevant norms as products of evolutionary - as well as economic - processes.

Chapter 8: Tourism Wildlife And Parks, Lisa R. Romney

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Ecotourism has been widely promoted for its potential to sustainably finance both conservation and economic development (Boo 1990, Card and Vogelsong 1995). While definitions of ecotourism vary, proponents envision it as a form of tourism that: (1) caters to environmentally and culturally sensitive tourist; (2) avoids negative cultural and environmental impacts; (3) promotes the conservation of natural resources; (4) contributes to local economic development; (5) encourages local participation in the development of tourism-related industries; and (6) utilizes low technology and low energy infrastructure.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Rev. Billy Graham: The Nature Of Man, J. Travis Paasch May 2000

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Rev. Billy Graham: The Nature Of Man, J. Travis Paasch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

First, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. moralized individual Christian activism to create dogmatically ethical changes in American society. Second, the Rev. Billy Graham prescribed that the only hope for humanity was in a personal reliance upon the puissant power of Christ's expiative. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how these two individual's respective views concerning the nature of man do not allow them to have congruent ideas of social activism.

Cognition In Non-Demented Elderly With A Family History Of Alzheimer's Disease, Christopher John Weight

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Objective: To assess differences in cognition in a population of non-demented elderly individuals as a function of a family history of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: We screened 5092 elderly residents of Cache County, UT for dementia, using standard DSMIII-R dementia criteria, in a stepwise protocol involving a brief cognitive test, an informant telephone Dementia Questionnaire, and a clinical examination. The resultant non-demented study population (4505) consisted of all remaining self-responding individuals who agreed to apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotyping. Using multiple linear regression models, controlling for age, gender, education, health status on day of testing, past medical conditions, and …

The Universal Grammar Of Criminal Law, Stuart P. Green May 2000

The Universal Grammar Of Criminal Law, Stuart P. Green

Michigan Law Review

There is something about the criminal law that invites comparative analysis. The interests it protects are so basic, and its concerns so fundamental, that it is natural to ask whether there are aspects of criminal law that are somehow universal. We want to know whether familiar concepts such as murder and manslaughter, intent and negligence, and insanity and mistake, are characteristic of other systems of criminal law as well, and, if so, what role they play there. In the last generation, no criminal law scholar has made better use of comparative law techniques than George Fletcher, the Cardozo Professor of …

On The Nature Of Norms: Biology, Morality, And The Disruption Of Order, Owen D. Jones May 2000

On The Nature Of Norms: Biology, Morality, And The Disruption Of Order, Owen D. Jones

Michigan Law Review

For a long time - and through the now-quaint division of disciplines - morals and norms have been set apart from other behaviorbiasing phenomena. They have also been set apart from each other. Morals are generally ceded in full to philosophers. Norms have been ceded to sociologists. In retrospect, it is not clear why this should be so. Reality is notoriously impervious to taxonomy, and the axis supposedly distinguishing morals from other norms is, after all, arbitrary. Moreover, behavior-biasing phenomena interact in important ways, making the study of parts - without more - just the study of parts. But one …

Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza May 2000

Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza

The Qualitative Report

If the use of social science assumptions and beliefs is what helped set fields of professional practice on the quest for recognition in the academy, what does the recent outpouring of publications on the limits of science reveal about sociocultural research prospects at the dawn of the 21st century? The last few years alone have witnessed the publication of special journal issues on the "scientific wars" of the nineties, year long professional association debates on "the known and unknown," and new books and online data sources proclaiming "the end of social science." Cumulatively, research and commentary on the limits of …

Reconstructing The World Of The Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures For Enhancing Trustworthiness And Credibility, Steven R. Thomsen, J. Kelley Mccoy, Marleen Williams May 2000

Reconstructing The World Of The Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures For Enhancing Trustworthiness And Credibility, Steven R. Thomsen, J. Kelley Mccoy, Marleen Williams

The Qualitative Report

Conducting in-depth interviews with clinical populations often poses a number of problems for qualitative researchers. Because of the skewed perception of themselves and the world around them, and because of their propensity to distort and deny the pathology of their illness, anorexic women are an example of one such group that can create possible problems for researchers, particularly those concerned with the trustworthiness and credibility of their analysis. How should qualitative researchers approach this population? How can a credible reconstruction of reality be produced? This paper explores and discusses the procedures utilized by the authors during an 18-month project in …

Alternative Liability In Litigation Malpractice Actions: Eradicating The Last Resort Of Scoundrels, Lawrence W. Kessler May 2000

Alternative Liability In Litigation Malpractice Actions: Eradicating The Last Resort Of Scoundrels, Lawrence W. Kessler

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

During the past 40 years there has been a major expansion in the duty of care owed to individuals by professionals. Attorneys, however, have avoided many of these new duties, able to violate a high standard of representational care with impunity. This article lays out the pattern of doctrinal change in medical malpractice and proposes similar modifications to litigation malpractice law. Using medical malpractice as a standard of comparison throughout, an argument is made that eliminating the "panoply of causation defenses" and other traditional elements of litigation malpractice will encourage the bar to both better protect clients and benefit the …

Women And Globalization: The Failure And Postmodern Possibilities Of International Law, Barbara Stark May 2000

Women And Globalization: The Failure And Postmodern Possibilities Of International Law, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the role of international law, particularly human rights law, as it relates to the process of globalization and its effects on women. Initially, the Article sets the stage by describing the course of globalization and the dramatic impact it has had on the world economy. The Author next examines the multiple and contradictory consequences of globalization for women.

The Article approaches this analysis from two perspectives. First, from a 'classic perspective," the Author contends that international law is the only legal system with the potential to regulate the principal agents of globalization-multinational corporations, banks and investment firms, …

A Dynamic Analysis Of The Global Timber Market And Carbon Flux Of Forest Under Global Warming: An Integrated Modeling Approach, Dug Man Lee May 2000

A Dynamic Analysis Of The Global Timber Market And Carbon Flux Of Forest Under Global Warming: An Integrated Modeling Approach, Dug Man Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As global warming migrates ecosystems toward the poles, the result has been a change in the distribution of ecosystem types and the productivity of ecosystem as well. Similar to other natural resources, forests are also potentially affected as ecosystems move toward the poles. Consequently, human beings are forced to adapt, and global warming will generate an impact on the global timber market through changes in timber harvests, regeneration inputs, stumpage prices, etc. In addition, the dynamic process of forest change in response to economic activities of human beings will accelerate or dampen the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. In …
