Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann May 2000

Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann

Theses and Graduate Projects

This hermeneutic study examines and compares the life experiences of three methamphetamine users who have been in chemical dependency treatment for their methamphetamine use. Findings of this researcher indicate that cognitive behavioral practice models have the best results when working with chemical users. There are few chemical dependency treatment programs which address methamphetamine users as needing different treatment approaches than other chemical users. Research indicates that those chemical dependency programs that address the multiple needs of the methamphetamine users and not just their drug use have the best results with helping them maintain long-term recovery from their chemical use. The …

From A Father's Point Of View: A Hermeneutic Study Of Non-Custodial Fathers And The Contributions That They Make To Their Children's Lives, Susan Pohl May 2000

From A Father's Point Of View: A Hermeneutic Study Of Non-Custodial Fathers And The Contributions That They Make To Their Children's Lives, Susan Pohl

Theses and Graduate Projects

This research is a hermeneutic study of three non-custodial fathers and contributions that they make to their children's lives. The literature review explores how children benefit from the presence of their fathers in their lives. The hermeneutic design was used asking the question, "What do you believe are the contributions that you make to your child's life?" The findings reveal that the fathers believe that they are contributing to their children's cognitive development, the development of humor, educational support, social emotional development, and identity. Implications for social work practice and programming are discussed.

Factors Affecting Reproductive Success In Hosts Of The Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus Aeneus) In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Christopher R. Hathcock May 2000

Factors Affecting Reproductive Success In Hosts Of The Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus Aeneus) In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Christopher R. Hathcock

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

During 1997–99, brood parasitism by the Bronzed Cowbird ( Molothrus aeneus), nest predation, and nest sites were examined in selected songbird species in southern Texas. I found a significantly lower parasitism rate in the Long-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma longirostre ) and Olive Sparrow (Arremonops rufivirgatus) than did Carter (1984) at the same site in the early 1980's. High rates of cowbird visitation to Altamira Oriole (Icterus gularis) nests suggest that cowbirds frequently attempt to parasitize this species. However, orioles probably puncture-eject cowbird eggs from their nests most of the time. Orioles experienced a significantly lower …

The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray May 2000

The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a literature review summary on the topic of the relationship of human psychological characteristics with athletic performance. Two research questions guided its development: (1) Is there any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance? (2) If there is any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance, is there further evidence that those individual characteristics translate in some way into group dynamics or attributes that may similarly influence team performance?

Aspects Of Insect Conservation: Community Effects Of Habitat Patch Edge, Area, And Shape, Sharon L. Osowski May 2000

Aspects Of Insect Conservation: Community Effects Of Habitat Patch Edge, Area, And Shape, Sharon L. Osowski

Biology

The findings of this study have implications for such conservation issues such as habitat fragmentation, reserve planning, and habitat conservation and ecosystem management. This study attempted to answer questions, using an empirical study, on aspects of habitat fragmentation. Current theory about reserve design suggests that: 1) larger areas have higher diversity/abundance than smaller areas; 2) square patches have higher diversity/abundance than linear patches; and 3) patches with hospitable matrices have higher diversity/abundance than inhospitable matrices. This study also adds to the knowledge regarding invertebrate responses to fragmentation. The experimental design was a split-plot multifactorial study. The edge factor had three …

Molecular And Morphological Identification Of An Endophytic Fusarium Isolated From Wheat And Characterization Of Its Laccases In Comparison To Affiliated Fusarium Isolates, Sun Il Kwon May 2000

Molecular And Morphological Identification Of An Endophytic Fusarium Isolated From Wheat And Characterization Of Its Laccases In Comparison To Affiliated Fusarium Isolates, Sun Il Kwon

Biology

A fungal isolate present as a seed endophyte caused disease in wheat and other cereals when grown under stressed conditions. The isolate was identified as a member of the Asian clade of the Gibberella fujikuroi species complex in the genus Fusarium, members of which are known as plant pathogens and producers of mycotoxins. The closest relative to the fungus was Fusarium proliferatum, although none of the previously described species was identical in all morphological and molecular phylogenetic characters. At least six laccase isozymes were detected in mycelial extracts or from extracellular culture filtrates of the Fusarium-wheat isolate. …

Effect Of Multiple Founder Events On Genetic Variation: Transplanted Populations Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Bernadette N. Graham May 2000

Effect Of Multiple Founder Events On Genetic Variation: Transplanted Populations Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Bernadette N. Graham

Biology

The use of reintroductions has become a widely used tool in the conservation of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). In an effort to reestablish populations of bighorn sheep in Utah, 23 individuals from two existing populations in British Columbia, Canada, Tranquille and Harper Ranch, were transplanted to Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. The two British Columbian populations had been founded from a native population near William's Lake, also in British Columbia. Small transplanted populations may have lower levels of genetic variation relative to the source population due to the chance loss of alleles following the …

Functional Characterization Of The Nonstructural Protein 2 Of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 17, Gary Christopher Fillmore May 2000

Functional Characterization Of The Nonstructural Protein 2 Of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 17, Gary Christopher Fillmore

Biology

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arthropod-borne pathogen that causes bluetongue disease (BD) throughout the world, with economic losses primarily coming from infection of domestic livestock. Although BTV has been well studied at the molecular level since 1969, the mechanism of viral replication has not yet been fully determined. The virus is composed of seven structural and four nonstructural proteins, and the role of each protein has been investigated but has not been conclusively established within the viral life cycle. This study focused on the nonstructural protein NS2 in an attempt to examine its functions as part of the viral replication …

Stomatal Responses In Intact Leaves: Stomatal Interactions Within An Areole, Freya W. Denne May 2000

Stomatal Responses In Intact Leaves: Stomatal Interactions Within An Areole, Freya W. Denne

Biology

The objective of this project was to study the interactions among adjacent stomata in response to environmental conditions. Fully expanded and intact leaves from cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) plants grown in a controlled-environment greenhouse were clamped to a microscope stage for observation. Changes in stomatal apertures in response to changes in photon flux density (PFD) and evaporative demand (Δw, the water vapor mole fraction gradient between leaf and air) were measured. Increases in PFD elicited no significant coordinating responses among stomata. Responses of stomata to decreases in PFD were suggestive of coordination, but not conclusive. However, stomatal …

Motivation Among Students With Learning Disabilities, April H. Conti May 2000

Motivation Among Students With Learning Disabilities, April H. Conti

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether intrinsic motivation is a major factor in explaining academic performance deficits in children with learning disabilities. Harter's Scale of Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic Orientation in the Classroom was given to 34 students with learning disabilities and 36 students without learning disabilities from Grades 4 to 6 from a suburban, middle-class school district located in Southeastern New Jersey. It was proposed that students with learning disabilities were less intrinsically motivated than students without identified learning disabilities. However, the general pattern of results derived from a T-Test for Independent Samples did not show a …

Integrating Liana Abundance And Forest Stature Into An Estimate Of Total Aboveground Biomass For An Eastern Amazonian Forest, Jeffrey J. Gerwing, Damiao Lopes Farias

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study provides an estimate of aboveground live biomass for an intact eastern Amazonian forest. An allometric regression biomass equation was developed to estimate the aboveground biomass of live lianas. This equation, together with a previously published equation for trees, was then used to estimate the contributions of lianas and trees to the total biomass of forest patches in four stature classes: gap (openings in the canopy of at least 25 m2 with the dominant vegetation < 3 m high), low (3±15 m canopy height), medium (15±25 m canopy height), and high (> 25 m canopy height). Total stand-level biomass was estimated as the weighted average of the stature classes. In 130 ha of surveyed forest, forest …

Quantitative Measurement Of Guest–Host Interactions In Supramolecular Systems: A Comparative Brillouin Scattering Study Of The Dianin’S Compound Clathrand And Two Of Its Isostructural Clathrates, C.A. Sandstedt, D. Michalski, Craig J. Eckhardt May 2000

Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

Single, isomorphous crystals of the guest-free clathrand of Dianin’s compound and two of its clathrates containing two ethanols and a heptanol, respectively, have been studied by Brillouin scattering to obtain their complete elastic constant tensors. The values found for individual elastic constants are related to microscopic interactions of the guests and host cage using the clathrand as the reference. Direct correlation of the interference of the guest heptanol molecule with the hexamer hydrogen-bonded network of the host cage to reduced stiffness of this clathrate is demonstrated. In contrast, the ethanol-containing clathrate is demonstrated to have negligible interaction of the guests …
