Admitting A Loved One To A Nursing Home: A Family Experience, Karen Hinrichs
Admitting A Loved One To A Nursing Home: A Family Experience, Karen Hinrichs
Theses and Graduate Projects
Admitting a loved one to a nursing home is often a traumatic event for family members. The Minnesota Department of Health states that nursing homes are experiencing higher resident turnover rates due to shorter lengths of stay for nursing home residents. With increased resident turnover, social workers have less time to orient each resident's family to the facility. Yet, numerous studies have concluded that residents, family members, and staff are more satisfied in nursing homes that view the resident and family as clients rather than only the resident. A needs assessment was completed in a 140-bed nursing home in a …

Extralimital Records Of The Mexican Free-Tailed Bat (Tadarida Brasilensis Mexicana) In The Central United States And Their Biological Significance, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman, Cary Grell
Extralimital Records Of The Mexican Free-Tailed Bat (Tadarida Brasilensis Mexicana) In The Central United States And Their Biological Significance, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman, Cary Grell
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Two new records of Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana are reported from Nebraska. The literature records of this taxon from the central United States are summarized. In this region of North America, these bats occupy a “natal range” where the species carries on regular reproductive activities and the populations are relatively stable, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. To the north of the natal range of T. b. mexicana is a “pioneering zone” where, under favorable conditions, the species is capable of reproducing and conducting its normal activities. The pioneering zone of the Mexican free-tailed bat includes Barber and Comanche …
Impacts Of Westernization On Non-Western People, Patrick W. Xaphakdy
Impacts Of Westernization On Non-Western People, Patrick W. Xaphakdy
Theses and Graduate Projects
On the global scale, Western values become the symbols of dominant mentality, economic prosperity, and possibly universal values. In general, Western values focus on free market, democracy, rules of law, separation between church and state, individualism, and human rights. In the past, major Western countries tried to promote these values through their political and economic influences on non-Western countries and their people. According to many moderate views of both Western and non-western scholars, these values are considered positive, constructive, and prerequisite for social and economic modernization of non- Western countries. Western values are primarily political, but their effects spill over …
Female Adolescent Offender's Experience With Restorative Justice Practice, Leslie Ann Houghtaling
Female Adolescent Offender's Experience With Restorative Justice Practice, Leslie Ann Houghtaling
Theses and Graduate Projects
This hermeneutic study examines the lived experience of one female juvenile offender as she went through the restorative justice practice of either victim-offender mediation (VOM) or group conferencing. Hermeneutics is an interpretive approach to looking at everyday experiences and uncovering what is usually hidden from us. When asked about her experience, one theme stood out as essential for the participant: becoming trustworthy. Several aspects including being listened to, re-developing relationships, and making amends with those who were harmed by the crime marked the participant's transformation. These findings correspond with Erikson's psychosocial stages of adolescence and young adulthood, as well as …

A Study Examining The Importance Of Early Intervention On Premature Development, Suzanne F. Appleby
A Study Examining The Importance Of Early Intervention On Premature Development, Suzanne F. Appleby
Theses and Dissertations
Every year, thousands of babies are born prematurely or at low birth weight. As a result, many of these children are confronted with health and developmental issues. The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of early intervention on premature development. It was hypothesized that premature children, who were initially denied early intervention services, would eventually be in need of services at a later time, and these children would be in need more than full-term children. The present study consisted of a sample of fifty-four children: twenty-seven pre-term and twenty-seven full-term. The subjects were collected from the Child …

Comparisons Between Add/Adhd Diagnosed And Non-Diagnosed Boys, Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade Eight, Daniel Del Vecchio
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale-Revised: Short Form (CTRS-R: S). The CTRS-R: S is an instrument used for the assessment of attention-deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) and related behavioral problems in children and adolescents. The study included 225 boys in grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight. The subjects were divided into two groups. Group one consisted of 165 boys who were not diagnosed with ADD/ADHD; Group two consisted of 61 boys who had been previously diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. A second analysis regrouped the sample by grade-groups that were consistent …
Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple
Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple
Faculty Publications
Nitric oxide (NO) has diverse roles in intercellular communication and (at higher levels) in immune-mediated cell killing. NO reacts with many cellular targets, with cell-killing effects correlated to inactivation of key enzymes through nitrosylation of their iron-sulfur centers. SoxR protein, a redox-sensitive transcription activator dependent on the oxidation state of its binuclear iron-sulfur ([2Fe-2S]) centers, is also activated in Escherichia coli on exposure to macrophage-generated NO. We show here that SoxR activation by NO occurs through direct modification of the [2Fe-2S] centers to form protein-bound dinitrosyl-iron-dithiol adducts, which we have observed both in intact bacterial cells and in purified SoxR …

Teaching For The Enhancement Of Self-Esteem Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Kathy Carney
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine if participation in structured, self-concept enhancing classroom activities would improve the self-esteem level of adolescents with learning disabilities. Forty-eight high school students identified with learning disabilities participated in this study. One-half of the students served as the control group and worked with the same teacher. The other 24 students were in the experimental group and were instructed by a different teacher who conducted lessons aimed at improving students' level of self-esteem over a period of 15 weeks. Self-esteem scores were obtained by administering the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory to all participants during the …
Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman
Shifting Distributional Patterns Of Mammals In Nebraska, Russell A. Benedict, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
New distributional records are presented for 20 species of mammals in Nebraska. The majority of these records appear to represent changes in geographic distribution rather than just better sampling in poorly known areas. One group of mammals, including the opossum, northern myotis, evening bat, red bat, woodchuck, white-footed mouse, and gray fox, is expanding westward, probably in response to increasing woodlands along river systems. Another group, including the meadow vole, masked shrew, and least weasel, is expanding southward, possibly in response to new prey species and changing microclimates. The eastern woodrat appears to be expanding northward in eastern Nebraska. The …

Gender Role Stereotyping In Occupational Choices, Paul Michael Rodrigo
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to see if students' occupational career choices were gender role stereotyped. The subjects making up this study were from a middle/upper class suburban area located in southern New Jersey. 192 subjects in fifth grade, 201 subjects in eighth grade, and 280 subjects in twelfth grade participated in this study. The percentage of males and females for each grade was close to a 50% split. This study was conducted using a survey, which asked the subjects what their choice for a career was at that time. Choices were compared to a listing of careers from …

A vegetatively reproduced buffalograss cultivar named 'NE91-118' is distinguished from other commercially produced buffalograss varieties by its excellent turfgrass color, cold tolerance, high density, low growth habit, and rate of establishment. 'NE91-118' is also distinguished by molecular markers and nuclear DNA content. 'NE91-118' is suitable for use in low to medium maintenance situations in arid and semi-arid climates of United States and Canada.
Uv Effects Of Plant-Associated Pseudomonads, T. E. Koper, C. D. Miller, A. J. Anderson
Uv Effects Of Plant-Associated Pseudomonads, T. E. Koper, C. D. Miller, A. J. Anderson
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Concerns about dramatic changes in the Earth’s atmosphere, such as ozone depletion, make it imperative to study how microbial communities are responding to such changes that will increase UV irradiance. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and UVB irradiation on the plant pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv syringae (Pss), and a plant beneficial, saprophytic root-colonizer, Pseudomonas putida (Pp) impaired their survival. Stationary-phase cells of both Pss and Pp were more susceptible to fatal UV damage than logarithmic-phase cells. This observation suggests that an active metabolism is involved in responses to protect against UV. Mutants of Pss and Pp, with insertions in rpoS, …
