We Use a Comparative Approach to Examine Some of the Physiological Traits that Make Flight Possible. Comparisons of Related Fliers and Runners Suggest that Fliers Generally Have Higher Aerobic Metabolic Capacities Than Runners But that the Difference is Highly Dependent on the Taxa Studied. the High Metabolic Rates of Fliers Relative to Runners, Especially in Insects, Are Correlated with High Locomotory Muscle Cycle Frequencies and Low Efficiencies of Conversion of Metabolic Power to Mechanical Power. We Examine Some Factors that Produce Variation in Flight Respiration and Energetics. Air Temperature Strongly Affects the Flight Metabolic Rote of Some Insects and Birds. …

O'Haver, assistant professor of chemical engineering, arrived at The University of Mississippi barely four years ago, but his impact on the local educational community seems far greater than his tenure here. Besides being an admired teacher, O'Haver has been active in research, grant proposals, curriculum improvements and community service.

In the last part of a series of interviews conducted by Michael J. Birkner, Robert Reynolds discussed on August 23, 2000 his life after World War II. After the war, Reynolds moved to Gettysburg. He discussed his time at a rubber factory and his decision to become a teacher at 50.

Method Of Treatment Of Conditions Associate With Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions containing as the active ingredient a spin-trapping reagent, preferably α-phenyl butyl nitrone (PBN) or spin-trapping derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for administration to a patient are disclosed for treating or preventing symptoms associated with aging or other conditions associated with oxidative tissue damage. Other spin-trapping agents can also be used, such as 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) or α-(4-pyridyl 1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), and other spin-trapping derivatives thereof. These compositions and methods are useful in the treatment of age-related disorders, pre-surgical and/or pre-anesthetic preparation or administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and in the treatment of disorders or trauma of the brain, …

Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett

The transition from working in either a special library or corporate information center to an academic library requires some adjustments. The least adjustment is the change from chemical information specialist to chemistry librarian in a dedicated chemistry library primarily used by advanced chemistry students and chemistry faculty. Most librarians, however, must either serve in multidisciplinary science libraries, or become science specialists in single campus libraries. In such situations librarians may face new responsibilities. Generally, librarians teach more in academic libraries, often to novice library users. Odor emissions from anaerobic lagoons containing large populations of phototrophic bacteria are usually minimal. This study was conducted to determine whether copper (123 ppm) and zinc (2,310 ppm) in diets fed to weanling pigs for therapeutic purposes affect phototrophic conditions within lagoons. Column reactors containing 47 L of swine lagoon sludge and supernatant were used to represent lagoons. The reactors were placed in an environmental chamber maintained at 24° C. Copper, zinc, and control manure were added to the reactors at a volatile solids loading rate of 128 g_vs m^–3 da^–1 using a hydraulic retention time of …

Fermentation Strategies For Recombinant Protein Expression In The Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Wenhui Zhang, Mehmet Inan, Michael M. Meagher

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Fermentation strategies for recombinant protein production in Pichia pastoris have been investigated and are reviewed here. Characteristics of the expression system, such as phenotypes and carbon utilization, are summarized. Recently reported results such as growth model establishment, application of a methanol sensor, optimization of substrate feeding strategy, DOstat controller design, mixed feed technology, and perfusion and continuous culture are discussed in detail.

The results obtained from the pore network model employed in this work, clearly show that the magnitudes of the intraparticle electroosmotic volumetric flowrate, Q(intrap), and velocity, < v (intrap,x) >, in the pores of the charged porous silica particles considered in this study are greater than zero. The intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intra), of a solute in these charged porous silica particles would be greater than zero, and, in fact, the magnitude of the intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intrap), of lysozyme is greater than unity for all the values of the pore connectivity, n(T), of the intraparticle pores and of the applied electric potential difference …

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-type 1 (PAI-1) is the primary inhibitor of endogenous plasminogen activators that generate plasmin in the vicinity of a thrombus to initiate thrombolysis, or in the pericellular region of cells to facilitate migration and/or tissue remodeling. It has been shown that the physiologically relevant form of PAI-1 is in a complex with the abundant plasma glyco-protein, vitronectin. The interaction between vitronectin and PAI-1 is important for stabilizing the inhibitor in a reactive conformation. Although the complex is clearly significant, information is vague regarding the composition of the complex and consequences of its formation on the distribution and activity …
