Consequences Of Dominance-Mediated Habitat Segregation In American Redstarts During The Nonbreeding Season, Peter P. Marra, Richard T. Holmes

Several species of migratory songbirds exhibit a distinct form of habitat segregation while on their Neotropical wintering grounds in which males and females occupy different habitat types. In the American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), that sexual habitat segregation is a result of behavioral dominance of older males. In that study, we examined whether such dominance behavior and the resulting differential habitat segregation has consequences for the condition or survival of excluded individuals. Molecular Phylogenetics Of The Bombycillidae And Limosa (Scolopacidae), Garth Michael Spellman

The Bombycillidae and their allies and Limosa and their allies represent ideal groups in which to use phylogenetic reconstruction to examine historic patterns of intercontinental colonization between North America and Eurasia and the role of intercontinental colonization in diversification. Molecular phylogenetic reconstruction suggests a Neotropical origin for the Bombycillidae and a subsequent colonization of Eurasia via Beringia, which is an exception to the normal pattern of a faunal exchange between these two continents. Molecular and morphological phylogenetic reconstructions suggest most relationships within Limosa are polytomous. Further analysis of the polytomous relationships indicates that the species of Limosa speciated relatively rapidly …

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), reestablished in northern Alaska in recent decades, have been increasing in number and distribution. However, their selection of habitat within the landscape, historically and presently, remains inadequately documented. This project produced maps of predicted muskox habitat in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), that provide a basis for management of muskoxen and protection of their habitat in relation to proposed oil, gas and mineral exploration. Vegetation analyses showed compositional differences and interactions between vegetation and terrain. Two mass media theories, 'Spiral of Silence theory' and 'Uses and Gratifications theory, ' have been used to explain and evaluate media usage from a feminist perspective. These theories both succeed and fail when used to analyze the World Wide Web as a mass medium. In order to effectively examine so-called 'fringe' groups and their publications on the Web, a new theory is needed that considers the more user-driven interface that the Internet and the World Wide Web provide for users. Chemo-Ecological And Evolutionary Aspects Of The Pollinator Reward System In Clusia Grandiflora (Clusiaceae), John Lokvam

The dioecious, neotropical plant species Clusia grandiflora produces two major pools of secondary metabolites, latex and floral resin. Latex serves as a defense against herbivory and floral resin as a pollinator reward. This reward is gathered by bees who use it as a nest construction material. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectral studies show that C. grandiflora latex and resin share two classes of compounds, poly-isoprenylated benzophenones and tocotrienoic acids as major or minor components. The close chemical correspondence between latex and resin indicate that they are evolutionarily related. Though the tocotrienes were not found to have biological activity, benzophenones …

Abundance And Timing Of Summer Run Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) And Water Quality In Clear Creek-Hogatza River, Northwest Alaska, Gareth K. Vanhatten

Biological, climatological, and hydrological data were collected from Clear Creek-Hogatza River from 1995 to 1997. A counting tower and partial weir were constructed to estimate chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). Partial hour counts were tested to see if they adequately estimated full hour counts. Chi-square tests indicated all estimates based on partial hour counts differed significantly from hour counts. ANOVA indicated no partial hour count differed significantly from the hour counts. Relative error analysis showed counts greater than 20 minutes produced unbiased estimates of hour counts. The three year estimated average was 96,932 salmon with the average peak occurring on 3 …

National Marine Fisheries Service trawl surveys result in more variable biomass estimates for long-lived Gulf of Alaska rockfish than researchers expect. Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) was investigated to improve these surveys. In August 1998 east of Kodiak, AK, a sampling cruise tested ACS for Pacific ocean perch (POP), and shortraker and rougheye rockfish (SR/RE). In each of six strata, simple random sampling was conducted, then ACS was performed on top stations. Stopping rules prevented sampling from continuing indefinitely. Results did not resolve whether ACS alone was better than simple random sampling. ACS, combined with stratification, increased precision of POP estimates …

The lack of basic knowledge on stock dynamics o f northern shrimp Pandalus borealis, a protandric hermaphrodite, has caused difficulty in regulating fishing effort on a scientific basis and in understanding potential causes behind population fluctuations and collapses. Previous length-based population models (LBMs), developed for other species, are undesirable primarily for two reasons: (1) individual cohort dynamics are masked; (2) variations in annual natural mortality (M) are ignored. The Prince of Wales flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus griseifrons), a forest associated species, is endemic to several islands in the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska. Mitochondrial and nuclear markers were examined to assess the genetic uniqueness of this subspecies and its geographic extent and to investigate gene flow among island and mainland populations of flying squirrels. Data from both sets of markers are congruent, and agree with the subspecific designation. The data also indicate that the Prince of Wales subspecies is isolated from other populations in Southeast Alaska, but that there may be gene flow among islands on which it …

Molecular studies provide the opportunity to re-evaluate and further investigate hypotheses such as those related to phylogenetic relationships, inter- and intra-continental colonizations, population differentiation, and the dynamics of hybrid zones. Three sets of molecular markers, nuclear and mitochondrial, were used to examine phylogenetic relationships among species within a holarctically distributed genus (Martes), and intraspecific diversification and population differentiation within American marten (Martes americana). In American marten, two morphological groups ('americana' and 'caurina') have been recognized, though the level of distinctiveness between them has been debated. Temporal Patterns Of Migration, Molt, And Fat Storage Among High-Latitude Passerine Migrants, Anna-Marie Benson

Aspects of migration, fattening, and molt in trans-continental passerine migrants were examined during spring and autumn migration in Fairbanks, Alaska (64°50’ N, 147°50’ W). From 1992-1998, 25,718 birds of 18 species were banded. Based on median dates of spring and autumn passage, species-level estimates of the duration of breeding range occupation ranged from 48 to 129 days. Adults departed significantly later than immatures in 11 of the 18 species examined and significantly earlier than immatures in only one species, the Alder Flycatcher. Adults had significantly higher fat scores than immatures in most species, but these differences were attributable to the …

This dissertation includes three discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neuroendocrine control of song in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. Specifically, the roles of testosterone, photoperiodic condition, opioids, and age were investigated with respect to song production and neural plasticity in the regions of the brain that control song (vocal control regions, VCRs)." The author "found that, in males photoperiodic condition and testosterone interact to regulate seasonal VCR volume plasticity, whereas testosterone alone controls song production. The objective of this thesis is to examine variation in certain New World land birds, focusing on morphological difference at the intraspecific level and genetic differences at the intra- and interspecific levels. First, I investigate sexual dimorphism in the Wilson's Warbler (Wilsonia pusilla), a Nearctic-Neotropic migrant parulid. Using museum specimens, I quantify the degree of dimorphism and devise a method to distinguish the sexes using morphological measurements. Second, I outline a new method of approximating Weir and Cockerham's 0 (1984, 1993), an unbiased estimator of genetic population structure. A spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) epidemic in the Copper Basin of Alaska beginning in the late 1980's has infested over 200,000 ha of white spruce forests in the region. The impact of spruce beetle-induced habitat changes on the northern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus) was investigated using mark/recapture techniques for 2 field seasons. Vole abundance and recruitment was significantly greater on low versus heavily infested sites but a large vole survival response was lacking. Vole food resources and protective vegetative cover did not vary substantially in areas with different levels of spruce mortality. Male movement distances were influenced by sex …

Major agri-environmental programs tried in the United Kingdom (UK.) since the mid- 1980s are examined in this report. Special attention is given to the Environmental Sensitive Areas (ESA) scheme, the Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS), and schemes to promote organic agriculture-first the Organic Aid Scheme and, following that, the Organic Farming Scheme. Several major studies and reviews of these and other agri-environmental schemes in England, Scotland, and Wales have been conducted in recent years. Effects Of Genetic Type And Protein Levels On Growth Of Swine, O.W. Robison, L. L. Christian, R. Goodwin, R. K. Johnson, J. W. Mabry, R. K. Miller, M. D. Tokach

A total of 1,588 pigs representing six genetic lines were included in this study. These lines were selected to represent a wide range of biological types for appetite, rate and composition of gain, and meat quality traits. Each line was fed four different diets differing in lysine content. Barrows and gilts were used in the experiment, and pigs were randomly assigned to come off test at one of three weights (113.6, 131.8, or 150 kg). Rates of increase in weight, backfat thickness, and longissimus muscle area were essentially linear. Genetic type and diet influenced (P < .05) rates of change in weight, backfat thickness, and longissimus muscle area and 10th rib fat depth, carcass longissimus muscle area, and dressing percentage. Genetic type × diet interactions were significant for weight change and 10th rib fat. As off-test-weight class increased fat and longissimus muscle area increased in linear fashion. In general, interactions associated with diet resulted from feeding the diet lowest in lysine. There was little evidence of genetic type × diet interactions. If those interactions that tested significant are real, they are a result of extremes in both genetic type (high fatness) and lysine level (low). Slaughtering pigs at heavier weights results in no change in rate of gain over the feeding period and linear increases in longissimus muscle area and backfat thickness.
