The Cardiac Correlates Of Attention In The Denervated Heart: A Study Of Infant Heart Transplant Recipients, Stephanie Dianne Griffone
The Cardiac Correlates Of Attention In The Denervated Heart: A Study Of Infant Heart Transplant Recipients, Stephanie Dianne Griffone
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The cardiac correlate of attention is a deceleration in heart rate, controlled by the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. This has been extensively studied in infants; the findings indicate that this deceleration is affected by a number of factors, several mediated by the vagus nerve. However, the effects of denervation on this response are not known. Studies with adult heart transplant recipients have shown attenuated acceleration in response to stressful mental tasks. This study investigated the cardiac response to attention in infants who had received a heart transplant, using a habituation paradigm. The hypothesis that they would show …
Interactions Of Igf-Ii And Cathepsin D In Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cells, Jesika S. Faridi
Interactions Of Igf-Ii And Cathepsin D In Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cells, Jesika S. Faridi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A primary role of the IGF-II/M6P receptor is to target lysosomal enzymes from the golgi to the lysosomes. This receptor has distinct binding sites for IGF-II and M6P, however, reciprocal interactions between these ligands have been observed (Kiess et al. 1989, 1990). Since IGF-II modulates the routing of cathepsin D in MCF-7 cells by blocking the intracellular binding of cathepsin D to the IGF-II/M6P receptor (De León et al. 1996), we hypothesized that expressing a mutant form of IGF-II that does not bind the IGF-II/M6P receptor will not interfere with lysosomal enzyme trafficking.
In our present study, we report the …

Molecular Cloning And Analysis Of The Modification Genes Of The Kpnbl Restriction- Modification System Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae Strain Gm236, Vernon Robert Chin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The KpnBl restriction-modification (R-M) system has been recognized for some time in Klebsiella pneumoniae strain GM236. Previously the restriction subunit (hsdRkpmBI) was cloned and sequenced, based on the sequence infonnation the KpnBl RM system was suspected to be either a type I or type III R-M system In this project the modification genes of KpnBl were cloned into a pMECA plasmid by using a modification expression method. The modification genes were identified on an 8.2 kb EcoRl fragment from a chromosomal library of the GM236 strain. The complete 8.2 kb fragment was sequenced and …

On The Assignment Of Gender To Chicano Anglicisms: Processes And Results, Robert N. Smead
On The Assignment Of Gender To Chicano Anglicisms: Processes And Results, Robert N. Smead
Faculty Publications
The creation of neologisms through linguistic borrowing is a complex process. For donor language models to be transformed into host language replicas, phonological and morphological adaptation must take place. Part and parcel of that adaptation is the assignment of gender to loanwords in a host language like Spanish. The present article examines gender assignment in two corpora of loanwords (New Mexican and Southern Colorado Spanish: N=212 and General Chicano Spanish: N=595). Through the application of variable rule methodology (GoldVarb 2), five factors are posited as significant. Two of these categorically determine gender assignment when present: (1) the biological sex of …

Population-Specific Vital Rate Contributions Influence Management Of An Endangered Ungulate, Heather E. Johnson, L. Scott Mills, Thomas R. Stephenson, John D. Wehausen
Population-Specific Vital Rate Contributions Influence Management Of An Endangered Ungulate, Heather E. Johnson, L. Scott Mills, Thomas R. Stephenson, John D. Wehausen
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
To develop effective management strategies for the recovery of threatened and endangered species, it is critical to identify those vital rates (survival and reproductive parameters) responsible for poor population performance and those whose increase will most efficiently change a population's trajectory. In actual application, however, approaches identifying key vital rates are often limited by inadequate demographic data, by unrealistic assumptions of asymptotic population dynamics, and of equal, infinitesimal changes in mean vital rates. We evaluated the consequences of these limitations in an analysis of vital rates most important in the dynamics of federally endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis …

A Balanced Nitrogen Budget Of The Surface Layer Of The Southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, Walker O. Smith Jr., Vernon L. Asper
Faculty Publications
To understand marine biogeochemical cycles, it is critical to quantitatively balance organic matter transformations within the euphotic zone. Such an assessment for nitrogen is difficult because of lateral advection, uncertainties in individual measurements, the complexity of elemental transformations (including nitrification and denitrification), and the difficulty of collecting data on appropriate space and time scales. Two cruises were conducted to the southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, to understand the time-varying fluxes of nitrogen into its various pools. From these data a balanced inventory was constructed. Nitrate removal in the upper 200 m was balanced by particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen production, ammonification, …

Effect Of Fragment Size On Non-Volant Mammals In La Cruz And Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2000, Seema Sheth
Effect Of Fragment Size On Non-Volant Mammals In La Cruz And Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2000, Seema Sheth
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of fragment size on terrestrial, fruit-eating mammals. In this study, it was expected that there would be smaller mammals in small fragments than in large ones due to limited resources and fewer predators. In each of five fragments of different sizes and in a section of continuous forest, plantains were used to bait mammals, and each site was checked every other day for damage to bait. Based on observations of bite marks on plantains, for groups of mammals were identified: small rodents, opossums, agoutis and pacas, and coatis. Number of …

Hymenoptera Diversity Between Pasture, Ecotone, And Secondary Forest Fragments, September 2000, Mia E. Kiistala
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Deforestation and forest fragmentation has been shown to have varying effects on biodiversity. In general, invertebrate diversity is expected to increase in the edge areas created by forest fragments. This study looked at the diversity of Hymenoptera in pasture, ecotone and secondary forest fragment in La Cruz to observe the effects of different habitats in diversity. The Shannon-Weiner diversity index values for pasture, ecotone and forest were 1.146, 1378 and 1.674 respectively, indicating highest diversity in the forest. Significant differences were found between the Shannon-Weiner diversity index comparisons (p <0.001).

A Comparison In Medicinal Plant Composition Of Primary And Secondary Growth Stands By Herbalist And Medicinal Literature References, September 2000, Jill Jankowski, Nichole Leger
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
We assessed the medicinal plant composition of a primary and secondary forest stand in lower montane wet forest in La Cruz, Costa Rica. Herbaceous and woody plant species above 45cm and below 200 cm in height (excluding vines and ferns) were collected identified and evidence for possible medicinal properties sought in both medicinal reference books and from local herbalist. We found approximately the same overall and medicinal diversity in both stands, but the species composition changed between primary and secondary forests. From our interviews with local herbalists, we found that herbalists knew more medicinal species in secondary growth than primary …
The Effects Of Patch Size On Hummingbird Visitation And Pollination In Habracanthus Belpharohachis, September 2000, Monica Lisa Saldana
The Effects Of Patch Size On Hummingbird Visitation And Pollination In Habracanthus Belpharohachis, September 2000, Monica Lisa Saldana
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
In tropical forests, plant species are sparsely distributed and in order to increase their probability of pollination they have developed bright, showy flowers that offer nectar to attract pollinators. In this study, I examined how the pollination rates are affected by the number of inflorescences present in patches of Habracanthus belpharohachis. In order to do this, I measured the percent of pollinated flowers from 22 small patches with one to five inflorescences, and flowers from 14 large patches with more than 15 inflorescences. I also recorded the number of visitations by the primary pollinator of H. belpharohachis, the Purple-throated Mountain-gem …
Anti-Predator Behavior In Birds: Reactions To Raptor Calls, September 2000, Robin Elahi
Anti-Predator Behavior In Birds: Reactions To Raptor Calls, September 2000, Robin Elahi
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Birds display a number of defense mechanisms against their predators, including camouflage, mobbing, fleeing, and aggregational behavior. I studied the responses of 32 bird species to songbird and raptor calls to see if birds displayed anti-predator behavior in response to raptor calls in comparison with songbird calls. One focus of my study was avian defensive strategies, namely flocking and concealment, so observations took into consideration different conditions: whether the bird was solitary or in a group, and whether it was exposed or hidden in vegetation. A previous study showed that crows could distinguish between raptor calls of their predators and …
Tid1/Rdh54 Promotes Colocalization Of Rad51 And Dmc1 During Meiotic Recombination, Stephen L. Gasior
Tid1/Rdh54 Promotes Colocalization Of Rad51 And Dmc1 During Meiotic Recombination, Stephen L. Gasior
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Two RecA homologs, Rad51 and Dmc1, assemble as cytologically visible complexes (foci) at the same sites on meiotic chromosomes. Time course analysis confirms that co-foci appear and disappear as the single predominant form. A large fraction of co-foci are eliminated in a red1 mutant, which is expected as a characteristic of the interhomolog-specific recombination pathway. Previous studies suggested that normal Dmc1 loading depends on Rad51. We show here that a mutation in TID1/RDH54, encoding a RAD54 homolog, reduces Rad51-Dmc1 colocalization relative to WT. A rad54 mutation, in contrast, has relatively little effect on RecA homolog foci except when strains also …

Theater Missile Defense In Japan: Implications For The U.S.-China-Japan Strategic Relationship, Patrick M. O'Donogue Colonel
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Colonel Patrick M. O'Donogue (U.S. Army War College class of 2000) considers a topic of key importance to U.S. national security. Perhaps no security matter (with the exception of National Missile Defense) is as contentious globally as Theater Missile Defense (TMD). The question of U.S. assistance to Japan to develop and deploy a TMD is particularly complex and controversial.

Gautam Sarath Publications
Background: Nonsymbiotic hemoglobins (nsHbs) form a new class of plant proteins that is distinct genetically and structurally from leghemoglobins. They are found ubiquitously in plants and are expressed in low concentrations in a variety of tissues including roots and leaves. Their function involves a biochemical response to growth under limited O2 conditions.
Results: The first X-ray crystal structure of a member of this class of proteins, riceHb1, has been determined to 2.4 Å resolution using a combination of phasing techniques. The active site of ferric riceHb1 differs significantly from those of traditional hemoglobins and myoglobins. The proximal and distal …

Effects Of Chronic Fluoranthene Exposure On Sibling Species Of Capitella With Different Development Modes, Inez Linke-Gamenick, Valery E. Forbes, Nuria Méndez
Valery Forbes Publications
Toxic effects of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene (FLU) on life-history traits and their demographic consequences were investigated in 3 non-interbreeding Capitella sibling species with different physiological tolerances and developmental modes: sensitive Capitella sp. S from oxygen-rich intertidal sediments of the North Sea (Germany); tolerant Capitella sp. M from sediments near shallow hydrothermal vents off Milos (Greece), a habitat low in organic matter with steep abiotic gradients and high sulfide concentrations; tolerant Capitella sp. I from New York (USA), known to dominate eutrophicated/polluted environments. Both Capitella spp. M and I can develop into hermaphrodites and have lecithotrophic larval development. In …
Historic Birds Of Lincoln's Salt Basin Wetlands And Nine-Mile Prairie, Paul A. Johnsgard
Historic Birds Of Lincoln's Salt Basin Wetlands And Nine-Mile Prairie, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The changes that have occurred in the bird life of the Lincoln area during the past century must certainly be great, but we have little evidence to document this point. There is, however, an annotated bird list from 1900 for the salt basin wetlands of western Lincoln, an area then gradually being developed for recreational use. This list was published by J. S. Hunter in the Proceedings of the First Annual Meeting of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union (1900, 18-21). Hunter reported that some 84 species (by modern taxonomy) had been seen by him and other bird-club members, including such modern-day …

A Receptor-Like Glycoprotein From Dictyostelium Discoideum: Functions In Phagocytosis And Cell Adhesion?, P. Christopher Larosa, Melissa B. Meirer, Catherine P. Chia
Papers in Microbiology
The molecular mechanisms for the initial recognition and subsequent internalization of food and unicellular pathogens by phagocytes are incompletely understood We have hypothesized that a surface-exposed, glycosylated I30 kDa protein, gp130, that 1s concentrated on the plasma membrane and found In phagosomes, has a role In phagocytosis by D. discoideum amoebae. GpI30 appears to have a cytoskeletal association and has extracellular domains susceptible to proteolytic digestion. It is tightly bound to the plasma membrane probably via a carboxyterminal hydrophobic anchor predicted from the cDNA. Gp130 may be the same as a similarly sized protein, gp126, that was implicated as a …
A Role For Calcineurin In Dictyostelium Discoideum Phagocytosis, Aidong Yuan, Catherine P. Chia
A Role For Calcineurin In Dictyostelium Discoideum Phagocytosis, Aidong Yuan, Catherine P. Chia
Papers in Microbiology
The Ca2+/calmodul1n-dependent protein phosphatase calcinewin is involved in the development of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. Because of its interactions with Ca2+, which appear to influence D. discoideum phagocytosis (Yuan and Chia, 1999, Mol. Biol. Cell 10, 220a), we undertook studies to test whether calcineurin also plays a role in Dictyostelium phagocytosis. The immunosuppressants cyclosporin A and FK506, through the formation of cyclosporin A-cyclophilin A and FK506- FK506-binding protein complexes, respectively, inhibited calcineurin activity. These two calcineurin inhibitors suppressed phagocytosis of fluorescently labeled yeast in a dose-dependent manner. Although it inhib~ted phagocytosis, cyclosporin A had an insignificant effect …

Integrity Of The Actin Cytoskeleton Required For Both Phagocytosis And Macropinocytosis In Dictyostelium Discoideum, Aidong Yuan, Catherine P. Chia
Papers in Microbiology
Filamentous (F-) actin is enriched in cellular extensions, such as phagocytic cups and macropioocytic crowns, of Dlctyostelium discoideum amebae. Previous studies of actin-disrupting agents that implicated the involvement of the actin cytoskeleton in Dictyostelium phagocytosis and pinocytosis, however, have yielded conflicting results. We show that the integrity of the actin cytoskeleton is required for both phagocytosis and macropinocytosis in D. discoideum with latrunculin A (IatA), which binds to monomeric actin, and cytochalasin A (cytA), which caps the plus end of actin filaments. Using rhodamine-phalloidin to visualize F-actin, cells treated for 30 min. with 1 to 4 pM of latA displayed …

The association of HLA class I heavy chains with ß2-microglobulin (ß2m) changes their antigenic profile. As a result, Abs react with either ß2m-free or ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains. An exception to this rule is the mAb TP25.99, which reacts with both ß2m-associated and ß2m-free HLA class I heavy chains. The reactivity with ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains is mediated by a conformational determinant expressed on all HLA-A, -B, and -C Ags. This determinant has been mapped to amino acid residues 194–198 in the …

A Science-Based Initiative To Manage Double-Crested Cormorant Damage To Southern Aquaculture, James F. Glahn, Mark E. Tobin, Bradley F. Blackwell
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Aquaculture has expanded rapidly in the Southern United States during the past two decades, especially the cultivation of catfish, crawfish, and bait fish. These fish usually are cultivated on farms with extensive systems of large shallow ponds that are highly susceptible to predation by birds. Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus ), American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ), wading birds (e.g., Ardea alba, Ardea herodius ), and scaup (Aythya spp. ) are among the birds most frequently implicated. Well-documented problems associated with cormorant predation on catfish farms have coincided with the increase of this industry and the rapid …
