In the long run, the most important tensions between Europe and the United States may not derive from differing policies toward Russia, or China, or the Middle East. The most important issues may arise over something that is fundamental to the European Union's own structure and legitimacy-namely, its systematic program of eroding or reconfiguring national sovereignty. This EU posture has many practical ramifications for US policy. But it also presents a clear ideological alternative. A world more in accord with EU designs will be a world in which national sovereignty has less and less meaning. Is that the kind of …

The Effects Of Human-Caused Disturbances On Water Quality And The Capability Of River Ecosystems To Recover From Disturbances: Using Benthic Macroinvertebrates As Indicators Of Water Quality, September 2000, M. P. Miller

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Degraded watersheds are considered a source of pollution input in rivers. The effects of human-caused disturbances and the abilities of rivers to recover from disturbances were analyzed in three rivers in the around the area of Monteverde, Costa Rica. This was done using benthic macroinvertebrate pollution tolerance levels (FBI), turbidity levels, and macroinvertebrate diversity. Diversity was found to be lowest in the disturbed sites of all three rivers (Modified T-test: 0.002 < p < 0.001). A pattern of maximum FBI values and turbidity levels at disturbance sites was also found to exist; and Escherichia coli were present at all sample sites in all rivers. The data from all rivers was combined for each site and regression analyses were performed. This data suggests that human-caused disturbances will result in decreased species diversity, increased FBI-values, and increased turbidity levels. The results also indicate that rivers have the ability to recover from small-scale human disturbances. The findings of this study support the idea that in order to maintain the diversity of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms as well as clean water for human use, humans need to take into account the effects of their actions on river systems.

Rates Of Fungus Infection In Coffee Plantations At Varying Distances From Forest Edge, September 2000, Julia Crown

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Coffee (Coffea arabica, Rubiaceae) is an important economic crop for many small farmers in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The humid, cool and dark conditions near the forest as compared to the middle of a plantation provide an optimal habitat for fungal growth. In each of three different farms in Cañitas, three transects were set from the forest edge into the plantations. The amount of fungus on the coffee leaves was measured at varying distances away from the forests. A significant increase in the percent of fungus on the leaves between zero meters and five meters into the plantations was found (3-way …

Religiopoiesis describes the crafting of religion, a core activity of humankind. Each religion is grounded in its myth, and each myth includes a cosmology of origins and destiny. The scientific worldview coheres as such a myth and calls for a religiopoietic response. The difficulties, opportunities, and imperatives inherent in this call are explored, particularly as they impact the working scientist.

The cluster determinant 4 (CD4) molecule is a transmembrane glycoprotein. CD4 is essential for normal T helper cell function and plays an important role in T cell development and activation. CD4 is encoded by a single gene located on chromosome 6 in the mouse and chromosome 12 in the human. Both human and murine CD4 genes are divided into ten exons spanning more than 25 kb and have a large non-coding region in the first and third intron. CD4 gene expression is controlled primarily at the transcriptional level during T cell development and activation.

The center of the brain-death and organ transplantation debate in Japan has always been whether whole brain-death should be regarded as the death of a person. However, the debate has not yet been settled in Japanese society. There are four main reasons why it is said that whole brain-death criteria are incompatible with Japanese society. First, they cannot establish a person's death because the Japanese define it not according to medical facts but according to social relationships. Second, it is impossible to determine societal consensus in Japan on this issue. Third, traditional Japanese views toward life and death are incompatible …

The objective of this study was to examine the role of gap junctions in the radiation resistance of thyroid follicles. The question of whether gap junctional intercellular communication plays an important role in the “contact effect”, wherein cells in direct apposition are more resistant to the damaging effects of radiation, has been debated for years. We used the Fischer rat thyroid cell line (FRTL-5) to carry out our experiments. This thesis is divided into two parts: 1) characterization of gap junctional properties in FRTL-5 cells and, 2) exposure of these cells to radiation.
