Regulation Of Sup Expression Identifies Multiple Regulators Involved In Arabidopsis Floral Meristem Development, Hajime Sakai, Beth A. Krizek, Steven E. Jacobsen, Elliot M. Meyerowitz

During the course of flower development, floral homeotic genes are expressed in defined concentric regions of floral meristems called whorls. The SUPERMAN ( SUP, also called FLO10 ) gene, which encodes a C2H2-type zinc finger protein, is involved in maintenance of the stamen/carpel whorl boundary (the boundary between whorl 3 and whorl 4) in Arabidopsis. Here, we show that the regulation of SUP expression in floral meristems is complex, consisting of two distinct phases, initiation and maintenance. The floral meristem identity gene LEAFY ( LFY ) plays a role in the initiation phase through at least two pathways, which …

Intestinal Lesions Caused By A Strain Of Chlamydia Suis In Weanling Pigs Infected At 21 Days Of Age, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen

The objective of this study was to determine whether a strain of Chlamydia suis shown previously to be an intestinal pathogen in gnotobiotic piglets could cause diarrhea and intestinal lesions in young weanling pigs. Pigs from 2 sows were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group 1 included 13 pigs that were weaned at 24 hours of age and then housed in isolator units and fed milk replacer and unmedicated starter ration. Group 2 included 8 pigs that nursed their respective sows, consumed unmedicated starter ration, and were weaned at 21 days of age. Ten pigs in group 1 and 6 …

Reconditioning Corn And Soybeans To Optimal Processing Moisture Contents, Michael D. Montross, Dirk E. Maier

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Experimental trials were carried out to evaluate the technical feasibility of reconditioning overly dry corn and soybeans to optimal market and processing moisture contents. Data obtained from experimental trials were used to validate an aeration simulation model. This model was used to evaluate the feasibility of reconditioning soybeans and corn. Reconditioning of grain was feasible at low airflow rates (0.11 m³ min^–1 t^–1) over a six-month period when an automatic aeration controller was used. Using downflow aeration and monthly unloading of the bin allowed for the greatest net economic gain. Predicted reconditioning in Des Moines, Iowa, …

The Effect Of Anisotrophy On The Potential Distribution In Biological Tissues And Its Impact On Nerve Excitation Simulations, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Presents a finite difference solution of the potential distribution associated with electrical current stimulation in an anisotropic in-homogeneous tissue environment and compare it to the isotropic case. The results demonstrate that there can be significant errors associated with the assumption of isotropic tissue properties in calculating the potential distribution along an axon in nerve excitation simulations. These errors can have a significant impact on predicted nerve fiber recruitment patterns when evaluating the efficacy of specific surface or intramuscular stimulus electrode configurations. Expanding The Use Of Environmental Trading Programs Into New Areas Of Environmental Regulation, Richard E. Ayres

Pace Environmental Law Review

This article identifies the fundamental policy issues that must be dealt with in designing market-based pollution control systems. Market- based pollution control systems are now well established in America air and water pollution control programs. So far, however, the benefits of such systems have been limited by the unease of regulators and others about quality assurance, environmental justice, and other design issues. In order to realize the full potential benefits of market-based programs these issues must be addressed as part of the program design.
