Summary of Argument: Throughout this proceeding, EPA has identified no policy or normative criteria to justify its NAAQS standards, thus suggesting that science alone can be used to determine the appropriate air quality standard. Science plays a critical, indeed essential, role in evaluating the risks of possible air quality standards being considered for adoption by EPA. However, science by itself cannot provide the justification for selecting a particular air quality standard. Especially in setting standards for non-threshold pollutants, such as in this case, scientific evidence cannot alone indicate where the standard should be set, since any level above zero will …

Recent years have seen remarkable advances in sonar technology, positioning capabilities, and computer processing power that have revolutionized the way we image the seafloor. The massive amounts of data produced by these systems present many challenges but also offer tremendous opportunities in terms of visualization and analysis. We have developed a suite of interactive 3-D visualization and exploration tools specifically designed to facilitate the interpretation and analysis of very large (10's to 100's of megabytes), complex, multi-component spatial data sets. Effects Of Entomopathonogenic Fungus Beauveria Bassiana On Plutella Xylostella And Nymphalidae Larvae, September 2000, Kari L. Simmelink

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study examined the use of the fungus Beauveria bassiana as a biological alternative to chemical insecticides for the cauliflower pest Plutella xylostella. Potential secondary effects of B. bassiana on several local wild butterfly pollinators in Monteverde, Costa Rica were also investigated. Larvae of P. xylostella (Plutellidae), Actinote leucomeles (Acraeinae), Pteronymia notilla (Ithomiinae) and a morpho species of Nymphalidae were collected and treated with the same concentration of B. bassiana fungus used on cauliflower crops in the Estación Biológica Monteverde greenhouse. Mortality of treated larvae was significantly higher than untreated larvae for P. xylostella (Chi-squared p < 0.001), while no difference was found for the three species of treated Nymphalidae larvae. These results support the idea that the use of biological alternatives such as B. bassiana may have fewer adverse secondary effects on the environment than chemical insecticides.

Non-native species tend to proliferate in disturbed areas and may be well-suited to the conditions found there (Noss and Csuti, 1997). The effect of an exotic species, Impatiens walleriana, on plant species diversity at path edges was examined in the San Luis Valley, Monteverde, Costa Rica. Morphospecies of plants in 1m x 1m plots were collected and abundances for each recorded for 19 paired plots (38 total) with and without I. walleriana. Shannon-Wiener Diversity Indices were calculated twice for the plots with I. walleriana (accounting and discounting for the presence of I. walleriana) and once without I. walleriana (mean H’ …

Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Sapium Glandulosum In Pastures And Light Gaps, September 2000, Karen Leigh Sonnenblick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to look at the frequency of infection and percent root infection of vesiculararbuscular mycorrhizae present in saplings of Sapium glandulosum in pasture and gaps. Saplings in the pasture had a significantly higher frequency of infection than saplings in the gaps (Two-by-two contingency table, X² = 27.855, p < 0.0001). Saplings in the pasture also had a significantly higher mean percent infection than saplings in the gaps (Mann-Whitney U test, U = 370.00, tied p-value = 0.0013). These findings indicated that the amount of disturbance that an area has been subjected to strongly influences the levels of VAM growth on S. glandulosum.

Tiller recruitment is an essential process for ensuring the perenniality of grasses. The timing and extent of tiller recruitment and the role of biennial tillers must be documented for key range species. Prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolia (Hook) Scribn.] is an important grass in the Nebraska Sandhills for both ecological functioning and as a forage. The objective of this study was to document tiller recruitment patterns and the occurrence and contribution of current year and biennial tillers to biomass production in prairie sandreed at 2 locations in Nebraska. This report provides an overview of the water quality problems and associated state and federal programs in the 40 counties that make up the PRIDE region. The 2000 Kentucky 305(b) stream assessment has identified over 1000 miles of impaired stream within the region. The major cause of pollution in the region is related to problems with pathogens. Much of these problems are related to straight pipes and failing septic and wastewater systems. It has been estimated that there are over 35,000 straight pipes and failing septic systems in the PRIDE region. A second major environmental impact in the region is …

This document provides a recommendation for proposed sampling sites in support of the general water quality assessment of the 40 county PRIDE region. A general assessment of the associated environmental problems and programs in the region can be found in the companion report: PRIDE Water Quality Assessment Report I: Problems and Programs while the report PRIDE Water Quality Assessment Report II: Chemical, Biological and Habitat Assessments provides a 10 year baseline assessment of environmental conditions in the region as measured by indicators of pH, fecal coliforms, habitat assessment, and macro-invertebrate assessment.
