Univercity News (2000-05-01)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann
Methamphetamine Treatment: A Hermeneutic Study, Sandra S. Hamann
Theses and Graduate Projects
This hermeneutic study examines and compares the life experiences of three methamphetamine users who have been in chemical dependency treatment for their methamphetamine use. Findings of this researcher indicate that cognitive behavioral practice models have the best results when working with chemical users. There are few chemical dependency treatment programs which address methamphetamine users as needing different treatment approaches than other chemical users. Research indicates that those chemical dependency programs that address the multiple needs of the methamphetamine users and not just their drug use have the best results with helping them maintain long-term recovery from their chemical use. The …
From A Father's Point Of View: A Hermeneutic Study Of Non-Custodial Fathers And The Contributions That They Make To Their Children's Lives, Susan Pohl
Theses and Graduate Projects
This research is a hermeneutic study of three non-custodial fathers and contributions that they make to their children's lives. The literature review explores how children benefit from the presence of their fathers in their lives. The hermeneutic design was used asking the question, "What do you believe are the contributions that you make to your child's life?" The findings reveal that the fathers believe that they are contributing to their children's cognitive development, the development of humor, educational support, social emotional development, and identity. Implications for social work practice and programming are discussed.
Experiments In Social Salvation: The Settlement Movement In Chicago, 1890-1910, Janet Reed
Experiments In Social Salvation: The Settlement Movement In Chicago, 1890-1910, Janet Reed
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, the settlement movement in Chicago is presented as a crucible for the development of Progressive reform. The subjective and objective necessities for social settlements are described through the lives of men and women central to the movement. Reformers such as Jane Addams, Graham Taylor, and Mary McDowell fused their personal motives to their expanding assumptions regarding public welfare in their pursuit of social salvation. The settlement community advanced a methodology of experimentation and flexibility, which was instrumental to the transformation of nineteenth century ideas of charity into the new twentieth century science of social work. The processes …

Reactions To Failure In Gender Non-Traditional Occupations, Wendy S. Kelly
Honors Theses
People are often called upon to make decisions about someone with whom they are unfamiliar. While not always the norm, in a business situation, managers frequently base those decisions on information presented to them by a third party. This study was an attempt to ascertain whether participants in the role of manager would punish female stimulus persons who fail at a masculine occupation, and if they would be reluctant to hire another female to the same masculine job. The occupations of nurse and pilot were used as traditionally female and male occupations, respectively. Participants read scenarios and assumed the role …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of Mexican American older adults with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes.
