The Light Beneath The Bushel: A Discussion Paper On Early Years Education And Care In The Republic Of Ireland, Francis Douglas, Mary Horgan

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This discussion paper builds on 'Where Angels Fear to Tread' in vol. 1, no. 1 of this journal (Horgan and Douglas 1998). It seeks to provide recommendations concerning the way forward which were submitted by the authors to the National Forum for Early Childhood Education in February 1988. These were based on research carried out for more than a decade on Early Years Education and Care in the Education Department of University College Cork. The paper commences with an overview of the 'Early Years' in the Republic of Ireland and then considers quality child-centred provision under three headings; structures, training …

Youth Violence : A Comprehensive Literature Review, Amy L. Licht Jan 2000

Youth Violence : A Comprehensive Literature Review, Amy L. Licht

Graduate Research Papers

Over the last decade a great deal of literature has been focused on the subject of youth violence. For this paper, youth violence is defined as elementary and adolescent-aged boys and girls who commit violent acts. These include: the use of physical force to produce injury or death to others, gang fighting, hate crimes, sexual and/or physical assault, bringing and/or using weapons at school, and aggressive behavior used as a means to gain a certain outcome.

Many studies have been conducted focusing on several dynamics involved in this complicated issue. The focus of the present work was primarily to: review …

Aggressive Personality: When Does It Develop And Why?, Rita Cantrell Schellenberg Jan 2000

Aggressive Personality: When Does It Develop And Why?, Rita Cantrell Schellenberg

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this review, three primary agents of social learning (parent-child interaction, peer interaction and television) are examined in relation to the development of aggressive personality during the formative years (infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence). Research has revealed all three agents as influential in the development of aggression, with the majority of research emphasizing middle childhood as a critical period for peer relationships. This paper suggests that the success or failure of peer relationships during middle childhood is a direct reflection of the social learning that took place during parent-infant and early childhood interactions. Hence, each stage, infancy through …

Knowledge, Consumption, And Endogenous Growth, Richard N. Langlois Jan 2000

Knowledge, Consumption, And Endogenous Growth, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

The recent efflorescence of interest in "endogenous" theories of economic growth has focused attention on the nature and role of knowledge in the growth process (Romer 1986, 1990; Grossman and Helpman 1990, 1994). Unlike earlier models of growth (Solow 1956; Swan 1956) in which technological change appeared as an exogenous parameter, this New Growth Theory (NGT) has sought to "endogenize" technical change by folding its production more fully into the neoclassical positive heuristic. Knowledge no longer appears as manna from heaven, but is now produced just as are bananas and tires: as the result of the rational optimizing behavior of …
