Effects Of Dietary L -Carnitine On Female Retired Breeder Rats Fed High Protein And High Fat., Erika Maria Zablah-Bendeck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Carnitine supplementation has been shown to protect animals from ammonia toxicity following an ammonium acetate infusion and to alter body composition (i.e. increase lean mass and decrease body fat) in younger animals. The aims of this study were to address the questions of whether: (1) carnitine lowers blood ammonia levels of rats fed high protein; (2) carnitine decreases the weight gain and body fat of older animals fed high fat; (3) carnitine decreases glucose-induced insulin secretion; and (4) consumption of a high fat diet increases total serum carnitine content. Sprague Dawley retired female breeder rats (n = 64) were stratified …

Effects Of Dietary Phytase Supplementation On Growth, Nutrient Utilization, And Phytate Degradation In Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Weibing Yan Jan 2000

Effects Of Dietary Phytase Supplementation On Growth, Nutrient Utilization, And Phytate Degradation In Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Weibing Yan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phytase supplementation increases the availability of phosphorus in fish diets, and dietary protein utilization might be increased as well by lower phytate concentrations in phytase supplemented diets. Experiments were conducted to determine if weight gain; protein utilization; mineral retention; apparent dry matter, protein and mineral digestibility; and phytate degradation in the stomach of channel catfish fed an all-plant-protein diet could be improved by phytase supplementation. Seven diets were tested: a nutrient complete diet (TC) containing 5% fish meal and six all-plant-protein diets (T1--T6) that contained minimal levels of available phosphorus (0.16%; total P = 0.57%) and zinc (53.37 ppm), but …

In 1998 a cross-sectional study on goat health and management was conducted in eastern and western Uganda. This study involved 1518 goats which were distributed in 145 herds in 5 districts, namely Kumi, Masaka, Mbarara, Soroti and Ssembabule. Cluster sampling was used to select farms across the two regions. A questionnaire on goat health, management and constraints to production was administered to 145 goat owners. Blood and nasal swabs were collected from a random sample of goats. For each goat a physical examination was performed to detect presence of clinical conditions. Serological assays for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), peste des …

The Relationship Of Biomass Allocation And Nutrient Dynamics In Loblolly And Slash Pine Forests., Christopher Ashley Dicus Jan 2000

The Relationship Of Biomass Allocation And Nutrient Dynamics In Loblolly And Slash Pine Forests., Christopher Ashley Dicus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aboveground biomass allocation and its effect on various aspects of N and P dynamics were investigated in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) stands planted at different spacings. Further, the relationship of nutrient demand and root production was investigated to validate the functional balance hypothesis in forest stands. N mineralization was greater in loblolly pine stands than slash pine, corresponding with greater needle litter N concentration. Both N and P mineralization increased in loblolly pine stands with increasing stand density, the result of greater nutrient input through increased litterfall. There were no species differences in …

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston Jan 2000

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effect of increasing phytase coefficient of variation (CV) in chick diets, and to determine the effect of phytase addition on nutrient availability in diets for swine and poultry. The first experiment (EXP) simulated varying mix uniformity of phytase by alternately providing two diets with two different concentrations of microbial phytase (FTU). Increasing phytase CV had little effect on growth performance, whereas bone ash and breaking strength and Ca and P retention and excretion decreased only at the most extreme CV. These data suggest that a phytase CV of between 34 and …

Structure, Expression And Promoter Activity Of Ubiquitin Genes From Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Jianlin Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Successful transgenic plant production is largely dependent on the use of suitable promoters. In this study, we described isolation of rice ubiquitin genes, and demonstrated the potential utility of the rice ubiquitin promoters in plant transformation systems. Two polyubiquitin genes (RUBQ1 and RUBQ2) and two ubiquitin extension/fusion genes (RUBQ3 and RUBQ4) have been isolated from a rice genomic BAC library. DNA sequence data revealed that both RUBQ1 and RUBQ2 contained an open reading frame encoding a hexameric precursor ubiquitin and an intron immediate upstream of the initiation codon. The two ubiquitin fusion/extension genes RUBQ3 and RUBQ4 contained one repeat of …

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

Relation Between Internal Parasites With Basic Services And The Nutritional Status Of Children Five Years Of Age In The Indigenous, Black And Mestizo Communities Of The Rural Area, Imbabura Province, R. Patricio Paguay Ruiz

Theses and Dissertations

Various studies have been done to determine the prevalence of anemia in our country, but these studies don't reflect the true magnitude of this sickness, considered in Ecuador a problem of public health since these investigations correspond to urban sectors and margins and not to rural places where the care is very deficient and in certain cases useless, mainly because of the difficult access and the lack of economic resources of the government institutions. The current work was realized in coordination with the school of Nutrition and Dietetics and with the help of the Benson Agriculture and Food Institute was …

The Global Carbon Metabolism Regulator Crc Is A Component Of A Signal Transduction Pathway Required For Biofilm Development By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, George A. O'Toole, Karine A. Gibbs, Paul W. Hager, Paul V. Phibbs, Roberto Kolter Jan 2000

The Global Carbon Metabolism Regulator Crc Is A Component Of A Signal Transduction Pathway Required For Biofilm Development By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, George A. O'Toole, Karine A. Gibbs, Paul W. Hager, Paul V. Phibbs, Roberto Kolter

Dartmouth Scholarship

The transition from a planktonic (free-swimming) existence to growth attached to a surface in a biofilm occurs in response to environmental factors, including the availability of nutrients. We show that the catabolite repression control (Crc) protein, which plays a role in the regulation of carbon metabolism, is necessary for biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using phase-contrast microscopy, we found that a crc mutant only makes a dispersed monolayer of cells on a plastic surface but does not develop the dense monolayer punctuated by microcolonies typical of the wild-type strain. This is a phenotype identical to that observed in mutants …

Fate And Behavior Of Lead In Soils Planted With Metal-Resistant Species (River Birch And Smallwing Sedge), S. P. Klassen, J. E. Mclean, P. R. Grossl, Ronald C. Sims

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils requires an understanding of the interactions between metal-tolerant plant species and soil chemical properties controlling the bioavailability of metals. We conducted controlled laboratory studies to investigate the effects that river birch (Betula occidentalis Hook.) and smallwing sedge (Carex microptera Mack.) had on the fate and behavior of Pb in a contaminated soil (3000 mg Pb/kg) and tailings (13 000 mg Pb/kg) collected from an abandoned mining site in Utah. Significant Pb accumulation in aboveground tissue was observed in smallwing sedge (≥1000 mg/kg dry wt.) in both the soil and tailings, but Pb was primarily excluded by …

Gary Snyder's Path, Jason Dockter Jan 2000

Gary Snyder's Path, Jason Dockter

Masters Theses

Early in Gary Snyder's life, he lived a rootless existence in pursuance of gaining spiritual satisfaction through a more harmonious relationship with nature. This rootlessness that dominated this period of Snyder's life originated in Snyder's European ancestors lifestyle, which valued exploiting the natural world for a profit. Through exposure to Chinese landscape paintings, Snyder found Buddhism and began to practice it as a means to reconcile his own humanity with the natural world, which his cultural heritage has alienated himself from. Through Buddhism, Snyder realizes the importance of reuniting humanity with the natural world.

Upon gaining this knowledge, Snyder assumes …
