Micronutrient And Iron Supplementation And Effective Anti-Malarial Treatment Synergistically Improve Childhood Anaemia, H. Ekvall, Zul Premji, A. Bjorkman Jan 2000

Micronutrient And Iron Supplementation And Effective Anti-Malarial Treatment Synergistically Improve Childhood Anaemia, H. Ekvall, Zul Premji, A. Bjorkman

Pathology, East Africa

The control of childhood anaemia in malaria holoendemic areas is a major public health challenge for which an optimal strategy remains to be determined. Malaria prevention may compromise the development of partial immunity. Regular micronutrient supplementation has been suggested as an alternative but its effectiveness remains unsettled. We therefore conducted a randomised placebo-controlled intervention trial with 207 Tanzanian children aged 5 months to 3 years on the efficacy of supervised supplementation of low-dose micronutrients including iron (Poly Vi-Sol with iron) three times per week, with an average attendance of ≥ 90%. The mean haemoglobin (Hb) level increased by 8 g/l …

Plant Quality And Spider Predation Affects Grasshoppers (Acrididae): Food-Quality-Dependent Compensatory Mortality, Mark A. Oedekoven, Anthony Joern Jan 2000

Plant Quality And Spider Predation Affects Grasshoppers (Acrididae): Food-Quality-Dependent Compensatory Mortality, Mark A. Oedekoven, Anthony Joern

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

For insect herbivores, population responses reflect interactions among multiple factors, including abiotic conditions, food plant availability, and biotic interactions guided by food limitation and natural enemies. In this set of field experiments, we evaluated the interactive, dynamic effects of limited food supply and predation from wolf spiders (Lycosidae) on mortality in Ageneotettix deorum, a common grasshopper (Acrididae) from North American sandhills grasslands. We attempted to determine whether the combined effects of food availability and spider predation on mortality were (1) noncompensatory, with the effects of each factor summing to determine ultimate population size, or (2) compensatory, where the effect …

Biosystematics And Evolution Of The Triatominae = Biossistemática E Evolução De Triatomíneos, Christopher J. Schofield

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Abstract

In this paper we summarize the systematics of the 130 currently recognized species of Triatominae and the key features of their evolutionary background. There is increasing evidence that the subfamily has polyphyletic origins, with the various tribes and species groups probably arising from different reduviid lineages in relatively recent times.

Coprolite Analysis: The Analysis Of Ancient Human Feces For Dietary Data, Karl Reinhard Jan 2000

Coprolite Analysis: The Analysis Of Ancient Human Feces For Dietary Data, Karl Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

Although archaeological fieldwork is hot and dirty, the most “earthy” side of the discipline is the laboratory analysis of coprolites. Each coprolite contains the remains of one to several actual meals eaten in prehistory, and analysis of many coprolites provides a picture of ancient diet that is unique in accuracy.

The term coprolite originally referred to fossilized feces in paleontological context. In archaeology, the term broadened to refer to any formed fecal mass, including mineralized, desiccated, or frozen feces and even the intestinal contents of mummies. Coprolites contain the remains of animals (parasites) that lived in the humans, the foods …

Sheep-Predation Behaviors Of Wild-Caught, Confined Coyotes: Some Historical Data, Ray T. Sterner, Kenneth Crane Jan 2000

Sheep-Predation Behaviors Of Wild-Caught, Confined Coyotes: Some Historical Data, Ray T. Sterner, Kenneth Crane

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

As part of efforts to develop The Livestock Protection Collar (U.S. EPA Reg. No. 56228-22), we videotaped sheep-predation events by 23 (15 males and 8 females) wild-caught, confined coyotes (Canis latrans) in a 31 x 41 m enclosure. Coyotes were paired individually with a sheep (Ovis aries) during 1 h daily trials. Nineteen (13 males and 6 females) of the coyotes made 75 fatal attacks of 1 to 7 sheep each; 4 coyotes (2 males and 2 females) made no fatal attacks despite 19 to 39 daily pairings. Of coyotes that made fatal attacks, 13 (9 …

Integrated Pest Management Of Black Bear Reforestation Damage, Gary W. Witmer, Dale L. Nolte, William Stewart Jan 2000

Integrated Pest Management Of Black Bear Reforestation Damage, Gary W. Witmer, Dale L. Nolte, William Stewart

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Black bear damage to commercial, coniferous trees on intensively managed public and private forest lands of the Pacific Northwest continues to be a problem for forest managers. Historically, methods such as relocation or spring hunts have been used in an effort to reduce bear density and damage. More recently, supplemental feeding has been used in an attempt to provide for the nutritional needs of bears during the damage period. Alternative silvicultural practices and repellents are being investigated for their ability to reduce the likelihood of bear damage. These and other methods need to be examined for their effectiveness, especially in …

Enriched Eggs As A Source Of N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids For Humans, Nancy M. Lewis, S. Seburg, N. L. Flanagan

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) decreases the risk of heart disease, inhibits the growth of prostate and breast cancer, delays the loss of immunological functions, and is required for normal fetal brain and visual development. The US has not established a recommended daily intake for n-3 PUFA. However, Canada has established the Canadian Recommended Nutrient Intake (CRNI) at 0.5% of energy. Dietary sources of n-3 PUFA include fish, chicken, eggs, canola oil, and soybean oil. Food consumption studies in the US indicate that the majority of Americans do not meet the CRNI for n-3 PUFA. Mean n-3 …

Determination Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexation Constants And Computer Aided Molecular Design, Carolyn J. Mordas Jan 2000

Determination Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexation Constants And Computer Aided Molecular Design, Carolyn J. Mordas

Honors Theses

Nizatidine, N-[2-[[[2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-4-thiazoly]]methy1]thio]ethyl]-N'- methyl- 2-nitro-I,l, ethenediamine, has been investigated for its potential to act as a host to small molecules through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. In previous work, pyridoxine (vitamin B6) was hypothesized to have a high guest-host binding constant with nizatidine. This was supported through experimental methods involving one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography. Computer aided molecular design and three dimensional conformationally flexible database searching led to the discovery of other possible guests, including albuterol, which has exhibited even higher binding constants from HPLC.

Growth And Performance Of Broiler Chicks During The Starter And Grower Phases In Phase-Feeding, L. Niki Loupe, Jason L. Emmert

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition program referred to as “phase-feeding” (PF) over the first 6 weeks posthatching. Diets were formulated using amino acid recommendations from the National Research Council (NRC) (1994) or from linear regression equations generated from best estimates of lysine (Lys), sulfur amino acid (SAA), and threonine (Thr) requirements. Regression equations were used to predict weekly Lys, SAA, and Thr requirements for use in a PF regimen that involved lowering amino acid levels following each respective week of the experiment, resulting in six diets fed over the 6-week period. Over the entire …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Medical futility has caused serious dilemmas in the fields of medicine and bioethics recently. It has become more confusing due to the use of high technological equipment and medicines that are given to prolong life and interrupt the natural process of death; Therefore, we have created a dilemma of medical futility. Until recently, not many steps have been taken to address futile or inappropriate care that is given to a large number of the population, but with healthcare costs rising substantially, the time has come when these issues must be addressed; This thesis will include a short history of medical …

The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker Jan 2000

The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examines the influence of operating parameters on the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from the effluent of the Clark County Sanitation District (CCSD) wastewater treatment plant. Several parameters that influence EBPR were investigated, including wastewater composition: (e.g. BOD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, Total P, Ortho-P, alkalinity, pH), dissolved oxygen levels, oxidation reduction potential, microbiology, volatile fatty acid concentrations, fraction of P in wasted sludge, and nitrification levels. Analysis of nitrate and effluent phosphorus levels indicated a strong correlation between the two parameters. Very strong denitrification, evidenced by very low nitrate levels, produced nitrogen gas that lifted microbes into the …

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams Jan 2000

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When the environmental movement began to surge in the 1960s, concerns were raised over the prospects of the U.S. population growing to an unsustainable level and causing irreparable harm to the environment and our quality of life. Unfortunately, population growth has not been given the priority it deserves not because it is not an important issue, but because of our failure to view population growth, and all environmental issues, from a biocentric outlook. It is this paradigm shift towards biocentrism that we as moral agents should be making and which will subsequently cause us to view population growth in a …

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill Jan 2000

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

Case-control studies have found elevated risk of colorectal cancer with higher eating frequency. The present analyses, the first to examine this association using prospectively collected information, utilized nationally representative data from the Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study of the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHEFS). The study population included 9,978 subjects followed from 1982–84 to 1992. Colorectal cancer cases (n = 141) were identified by self-report, hospital records, and death certificates. Interviews conducted in 1982–84 provided information on meal and snack frequencies and covariates of interest. Relative risk (RR) of colorectal cancer and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using …

Hard Choices: Thoughts For New Lawyers, David C. Vladeck Jan 2000

Hard Choices: Thoughts For New Lawyers, David C. Vladeck

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Rarely do law schools challenge students to examine their assumptions about what being a lawyer really means. Seldom do law schools undertake a probing examination of the role that lawyers play in society and the choices that lawyers have to make in terms of how they spend their working lives. For example, how many of you have a clue about the basic facts of our profession? How many lawyers there are in the United States? What do they do? What percentage work for the government? For large law firms? For small firms? For legal services organizations? For public interest groups? …
