Client-Centered Versus Traditional-Directive Educational Approach: A Randomized Study Of Exercises And Perceived Control Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Melissa D. Olfert Jan 2000

Client-Centered Versus Traditional-Directive Educational Approach: A Randomized Study Of Exercises And Perceived Control Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Melissa D. Olfert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A patient’s adherence to self-management therapies in diabetes strongly influences health outcomes, health care utilization, and ultimately health care costs. Engaging in regular exercise therapy reduces risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this randomized prospective study was to determine if a client-centered approach (CCA) toward diabetes education, verses a traditional-directive approach (TDA), would improve exercise participation, perceived control, intention to exercise, and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Fifty-nine type 2 patients were randomized into two groups: CCA and TDA. Diabetes education in the CCA group provided empowerment toward acquiring knowledge, skills, and responsibility …

The Effect Of Stress And Genetic Factors On Alcohol Consumption Among Males In Olancho District, Honduras, Gloria Amanda Madrid Jan 2000

The Effect Of Stress And Genetic Factors On Alcohol Consumption Among Males In Olancho District, Honduras, Gloria Amanda Madrid

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alcoholism is a major public health problem globally. More than twenty studies have examined the association between the neurotransmitter dopamine DRD2 TaqI polymorphism and the onset of alcoholism, with half supporting an association. This study was based on the assumption that there is a relationship between the presence of the DRD2, one’s exposure to stress, and alcohol consumption. We examined the gene-stress interactional model in a sample of 309 males of Mayan descendents in the Olancho district of Honduras (age range 18-87). Participants were interviewed by a health care professional and blood samples were obtained for genetic identification. The Michigan …

Predicting Milk And Soft Drink Consumption Among Female Adolescents Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Nada Osman Kassem

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A total of 756 female adolescents, aged 13 to 18 years, from five public high schools in Antelope Valley Union High School District located in North Los Angeles County participated in this study between February 1999 and March 1999. The ethnic composition was 53.3% White/Anglo Americans, 19.3% Hispanics or Latinos and 10.2% Black/African Americans. The constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control and their underlying beliefs) were assessed to determine the predictors of low-fat milk and regular soda consumption. A cross-sectional design with group-administered questionnaires was utilized.

Most participants (89.6%, n = 636) …

Herbal Remedies Are Not Dietary Supplements: A Proposal For Regulatory Reform, Cary Elizabeth Zuk Jan 2000

Herbal Remedies Are Not Dietary Supplements: A Proposal For Regulatory Reform, Cary Elizabeth Zuk

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Increasingly, consumers are turning to herbal remedies to help heal what ails them. This note explores the past and present regulation of herbal remedies. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 provided a convenient regulatory vehicle-"dietary supplements"-for herbal remedies to enter the market with labeling that claims a positive effect on the structure or function of the body or on one's general sense of well-being. This note argues that DSHEA fails as a regulatory system for herbal remedies. While it safeguards access to herbal remedies, DSHEA only allows vague labeling information suggesting the therapeutic potential of the …

Bulletin 4446 - Ord Land And Water Management Plan 2000, Agriculture Western Australia, Community Of Kununurra

Bulletins 4000 -

The wise use of the land and water of the Ord has become an imperative driven by increasing awareness of the impacts of current uses on ground water and the on the quality of the Ord River itself.

We have been lucky as a community that these resources are still in reasonable order and that we have the time to address the resource management challenges associated with our use of them. There is a wide range of land and water management issues to be addressed and all those involved have responsibilities to address some of those issues.

Judicial Lobbying At The Wto: The Debate Over The Use Of Amicus Curiae Briefs And The U.S. Experience, Padideh Ala'i

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay first reviews the controversy surrounding the issuance of procedures for amicus curiae submissions by the Appellate Body in E.C.—Asbestos. Second, it looks at the history and practice of amicus curiae briefs at the WTO. Third, the Essay looks at how in the United States an amicus curiae has changed from being a “friend of the court” to a “judicial lobbyist,” and specifically, focusing on the procedural approach taken by the U.S. Supreme Court in addressing the negative impact of such judicial lobbying. Finally, the Essay draws certain lessons from the U.S. experience and concludes that the Appellate Body …

Whole-Body Vibration And The Lower Back: The Effect Of Whole-Body Vibration On Pain In The Lower Back., Erik W. Gregory Jan 2000

Whole-Body Vibration And The Lower Back: The Effect Of Whole-Body Vibration On Pain In The Lower Back., Erik W. Gregory

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study utilized six subjects from the West Virginia University Motor pool, whose exposure to whole-body vibrations were measured and reported as root mean squared (r.m.s.) values in accordance with ISO standard 2631. Each subject completed a questionnaire regarding their general health, and specifically whether they experienced low back pain, and if so, the extent and severity of this pain. It was expected that the individuals subjected to the highest vibration levels would tend to report LBP, with severity of pain increasing with the intensity of exposure. This study did not support that belief. However, it may be that chronic …

Salinity Tolerance Of Selected Ectomycorrhizal Fungi (Pisolithus Tinctorius Pers.) And Ectomycorrhizal Eucalypts, Ben Bradshaw Jan 2000

Salinity Tolerance Of Selected Ectomycorrhizal Fungi (Pisolithus Tinctorius Pers.) And Ectomycorrhizal Eucalypts, Ben Bradshaw

Theses : Honours

Increasing soil salinity has become a major problem worldwide. It has led to a reduction in the amount of arable land, has put at risk the supply of freshwater and threatens the existence of many natural habitats. The major increase in salinity has been attributed to human activities such as clearing of natural vegetation and large-scale irrigation programmes. The alleviation of this problem has focussed on changed management strategies. the most significant of which is the re-establishment of deep rooted plants in sail affected areas. This, however, is difficult because of the variation in salt tolerance of such plants and …

Molecular Investigations In The Role Of The Galk1 Gene In Galactokinase Deficiency, Michael L. Hunter Jan 2000

Molecular Investigations In The Role Of The Galk1 Gene In Galactokinase Deficiency, Michael L. Hunter

Theses : Honours

Galactokinase deficiency is an autosomal-recessive inborn error of galactose metabolism whose major clinical manifestation is the development of cataracts during the first months of life. This metabolic disorder is caused by defects in the first enzyme of the Leloir pathway, galactokinase, encoded by the gene GALK1 on chromosome 17q24. Despite the identification of a number of conserved domains in GALK1, understanding of the functional significance of these regions and the molecular basis of the disorder is limited. This is largely due to the rarity of the disease and the fact that the small number of GALK1 mutations identified to-date are …

A Diet Study Of Australia's Most Critically Endangered Mammal, Gilbert's Potoroo, Potorous Gilbertii (Marsupialia : Potoroidae), Vinh Nguyen

Theses : Honours

After 125 years of presumed extinction, Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) was rediscovered in 1994 in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, Albany. As only one population is known to exist, conservation is of prime importance. Faecal analysis was used to examine the diet of P. gilbertii. The species was found to be predominantly mycophagous (fungus-feeding) with invertebrate and plant matter fanning only a small part of its diet. Fungal material made up more than 90% of faecal matter throughout the year. A total of 44 fungal spore types were discerned. Of these, five were tentatively identified to species level with the …
