Effect Of Increasing Dietary Corn Silage On Performance, Digestibility And Nitrogen Mass Balance In The Feedlot, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Ryan Mass
Effect Of Increasing Dietary Corn Silage On Performance, Digestibility And Nitrogen Mass Balance In The Feedlot, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Ryan Mass
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Three dietary corn silage levels (15, 30, and 45% of diet DM) were evaluated in corn finishing diets fed to calves through the winter/spring and yearlings during the summer to determine effects on performance and nitrogen mass balance in feedlot. Yearling gains decreased quadratically with increasing corn silage; however, N and OM removed in manure was greatest for the 30% silage treatment. Calf gains decreased linearly as silage increased; however, N and OM removed in manure was greatest for the 45% silage treatment. Increasing dietary corn silage resulted in decreased gains but did influence manure N with no effect on …

Supplementing Metabolizable Protein To Yearling Heifers Grazing Winter Range, Trey Patterson, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Andy Applegarth
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Two experiments were conducted with pregnant yearling heifers grazing Sandhills winter range to evaluate response of supplementing to meet the metabolizable protein requirement of the heifers versus conventional supplementation based on crude protein. Supplements were fed from October to February (pre-calving) both years. Intake was measured in November, January and February of the first year. Supplementing to meet metabolizable protein requirement improved the heifers’ ability to maintain weight in year one, but not in year two. Heifer intakes ranged from 2.2% of BW in November to 1.5% in February. Feeding hay reduced body weight loss compared to no hay feeding …
Evaluation Of The 1996 Beef Cattle Nrc Model Predictions Of Intake And Gain For Calves Fed Low Or Medium Energy Density Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dennis R. Brink
Evaluation Of The 1996 Beef Cattle Nrc Model Predictions Of Intake And Gain For Calves Fed Low Or Medium Energy Density Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Dennis R. Brink
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Data from feeding 54 diets in seven previous beef cattle growing studies were used to evaluate the 1996 NRC model for the accuracy of intake and gain predictions. Calf weights and diets were inputs into the model, and actual intakes were used to calculate predicted gain and actual gains were used to calculate predicted intakes. The model over-predicted calf intakes on low quality diets and under-predicted intakes on high quality diets. The model over-predicted gains on high quality diets and under-predicted gains on low quality diets. The NRC model did not accurately predict performance of cattle on low quality roughage …

Exclusive Or Concurrent Competence To Make Medical Decisions For Adolescents In The United States And United Kingdom , Robert L. Stenger
Exclusive Or Concurrent Competence To Make Medical Decisions For Adolescents In The United States And United Kingdom , Robert L. Stenger
Journal of Law and Health
Medical decision-making is one area where drawing and applying a single defining line between childhood and adulthood has proven difficult. Each society determines how it will allocate decision-making authority with respect to children. This article will address how such allocations have been developed in the United States and the United Kingdom. An analysis of the capacity of an adolescent to make decisions remains incomplete without some consideration of the role of parent(s) and of the government. It is precisely here that recent developments in the United Kingdom may provide helpful guidance in the United States.

The Us School Breakfast Program: Short- And Long-Term Academic Effects, Chris Rohlfs
Honors Papers
This paper evaluates short- and long-term academic effects of the US School Breakfast Program (SBP). The paper divides into four sections: an introduction (page 4), a literature review (page 11), a statistical model (page 31), and an empirical model (page 38). In the first section, we cover general facts and details about the SBP. In the second section, we first review literature relevant to the SBP (supply, demand, and short-term effects studies). Next, we explore studies of the long-term effects of schooling and of school quality. Many of the techniques and information from these studies relate to our discussion of …
Gendering Bodies In Preschool: The Importance Of The Interconnectedness Of Race, Class, And Gender, Abigail D. Paine
Gendering Bodies In Preschool: The Importance Of The Interconnectedness Of Race, Class, And Gender, Abigail D. Paine
Honors Papers
The methods through which children learn to identify with a gender and its ascribed roles in United States society have been documented thoroughly in both psychology and sociology. Although there are many researchers who agree that gender roles are limiting, stereotypical expressions of gender, they exist and continued to be learned by children, nevertheless. How are children's gender roles enforced? Why do children continue to grow up knowing what to attribute as "masculine" or "feminine"? One interesting way that stereotypical gender roles are enforced is through processes that gender children's bodies.

Home Ranges And Movements Of Adult Deer On Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Gregory G. Humphreys, Thomas A. Nelson
Home Ranges And Movements Of Adult Deer On Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Gregory G. Humphreys, Thomas A. Nelson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We radio-tracked 27 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) weekly for one year on Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, to investigate their seasonal home ranges and movements between hunted areas and refuges on this military base. This work resulted in2,123 separate radiolocations, of which 85% (1,799) were suitable for use in home range analyses. We used the McPAAL computer package to estimate home range using the Harmonic Mean and minimum convex polygon (MCP) methods. Harmonic mean estimates were based on 95% contour lines. Home range size differed between the sexes and methods. Male home ranges were larger than those of females (t= 3.32, P<0.01; harmonic mean) (t=2.07, P<0.05; MCP). Average home range sizes for males and females based on the harmonic mean method were estimated to be 483 ha and 181 ha, respectively, whereas home range estimates for males and females using the MCP method were 636 ha and 289 ha, respectively. The average home range size for all deer was 259 ha (harmonic mean) and 379 ha (MCP). We found no evidence that females restricted their home ranges during the fawning period. However, females' home ranges expanded during the breeding season, perhaps to find mates. Few deer moved to refuge areas that were off-limits to hunters during the hunting season.

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As part of a larger study examining well-being among older West Virginia residents, male spousal caregivers (n = 30) and their non-caregiving counterparts (n = 99) were compared on self-reports of physical and psychological well-being, and appraisals of social support. Demographic trends suggest the importance of examining the caregiving situation among females, the traditional caregivers, and male caregivers who are growing in numbers. The data revealed few differences between caregivers and non-caregivers, chronological age was not a factor. This suggests that the male and female caregiving experience are not consistent. Given the growing percentage of male caregivers and the demand …
Coping With Health-Related Problems And Psychological Distress Amongst Older Adult Hospital Patients, Fotini Katerina Zachariades
Coping With Health-Related Problems And Psychological Distress Amongst Older Adult Hospital Patients, Fotini Katerina Zachariades
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study addresses the extent to which coping strategies can predict emotional status amongst a sample of older adult hospital patients in Perth, Western Australia. Older people are frequently in hospitals because of the large number of serious health problems that are more common in this age group. Older people vary in how well they deal with illness, and negative emotional reactions can complicate medical care. The emotional states of depression, anxiety and somatic complaints were assessed in a group of 120 older adults from two Perth hospitals. Two questionnaires were administered: the Depression, Anxiety and Somatic Complaints subscales from …
A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Hip Fracture In The Elderly Population, Stephanie Anne Price
A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Hip Fracture In The Elderly Population, Stephanie Anne Price
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The social, emotional and economic impact of falling in the elderly population is significant. Falls are the leading cause of injury related deaths and hospitalisation amongst people aged 65 years and older, a major factor in their morbidity and mortality rates. Post fall sequelae can have major ramifications that include reduction or avoidance of activities, attributable to an enduring fear of future falls. Twenty-three older people who had fallen in the community were located via hospital records and invited to participate in the study. Subjective accounts of the impact of falling and sustaining a hip fracture were obtained by means …

Parents' Construction Of Emotional Abuse And Neglect Of Children Aged Birth To Six Years In A Rural District In Uganda, Edreda Tuwangye
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Child abuse and neglect are endemic not only in Western countries but also in developing countries such as Uganda. An investigation was conducted to establish how parents living in rural Uganda construe child abuse and neglect. The study is of theoretical interest on two counts. First, there is evidence to suggest that Western accounts of child abuse and neglect may not apply to developing countries, a matter of importance given the dominance of Western research in the thinking of policy and intervention studies. Second, most of the research assumes that abuse and neglect are self-evident constructs and there is seldom …
The Use Of The Cognitive Status Examination In Detecting Cognitive Impairment In Elderly People, Geoff Mccann
The Use Of The Cognitive Status Examination In Detecting Cognitive Impairment In Elderly People, Geoff Mccann
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Dementia is a growing social problem in Australia because as the population ages, the incidence of dementia increases. While the prevalence rates are only about I% at age 65, they double every five years until by 85 years of age the rate is over 24%. It is expected that by the year 2030, the number of elderly people with dementia will increase by 200%. Dementia is easily recognized in its advanced stages but can be overlooked in the early phase. Family members, care-givers and even the treating medical practitioner may mistakenly attribute the early decline in mental function to the …

Part I of this paper provides a brief overview of the development of biotechnology, its regulation and its use, with a particular emphasis on agricultural biotechnology. Part II outlines the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which provides an international legal framework for a biosafety protocol and summarizes the results of recent protocol negotiations, such as those conducted in Cartagena, Colombia in February 1999, which continued in Montreal in January 2000. Part III explains why the proposed protocol embodies a variant of the precautionary principle and why such policies may do more harm than good. This paper concludes with some …

Enhancing The Use Of Emergency Contraception In A Refugee Setting: Findings From A Baseline Survey In Kakuma Refugee Camps, Kenya, Esther G. Muia, Joyce Olenja
Reproductive Health
In August 1992, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) at the request of the United Nations, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and the Kenyan Government, initiated a primary health care program in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Since then, the population of the camp has continued to grow, and activities have moved from a crisis to a maintenance phase. In January 1997, IRC assumed the additional responsibility of the camp hospital, bringing the entire health sector under their management. IRC's programs focus on maintaining and improving public health and promoting self-reliance, particularly of the most vulnerable communities. This project focuses …

Factors Associated With Healthy Eating: Attitudes, Cultural Adherence, And Snacking Behavior Among Korean-American Adolescents, Kyoung Eun Oh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Adolescents have increased nutrition needs and report frequent meal skipping and snacking, but there are few studies that examine the determinants of unhealthy eating, especially among ethnic minority groups. This study investigated dietary intake and snacking behavior among Korean-American adolescents in the Los Angeles area. We determined the relationship between dietary fat intake and overall quality of the diet as assessed by two healthy eating indices: the Healthy Eating Index (HEl) and Mean Nutrient Adequacy Ratio (MNAR). HEl assessed degree of compliance to Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines for Americans while MNAR assessed nutrient consumption compared to Recommended Dietary …
