Modeling Plant-Soil-Atmosphere Carbon Dioxide Exchange Using Optimality Principles, Kevin Patrick Tu Jan 2000

Modeling Plant-Soil-Atmosphere Carbon Dioxide Exchange Using Optimality Principles, Kevin Patrick Tu

Doctoral Dissertations

The exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere plays a central role in the ecology of the biosphere and the climate system. Towards quantification of ecosystem-atmosphere CO 2 exchange, a generalized model of plant-soil-atmosphere CO2 exchange (OPTICAL) was described and evaluated using eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) in arctic, boreal, temperate, and tropical landscapes. The model requires no calibration and is based on theories of plant resource optimization and plant-soil nutrient feedbacks. The model predicts canopy photosynthetic capacity (Pcmax), canopy photosynthesis (P c), plant respiration (Rp), and soil heterotrophic respiration (RH). …

Source, Production And Export Of Dissolved Organic Carbon And Nitrogen, Jacqueline A. Aitkenhead-Peterson Jan 2000

Source, Production And Export Of Dissolved Organic Carbon And Nitrogen, Jacqueline A. Aitkenhead-Peterson

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to quantify the major sources of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) in forest soils and ascertain mechanisms for their production and export to surface waters. To quantify the source of DOC we made use of the on-going litter manipulation study (DIRT) at Harvard Forest, Massachusetts. The organic horizon supplies 74% of DOC to bulk soil solution, 12% is supplied by leaf litter, and 13% from root exudate and decay. In plots with no inputs, DON concentrations were 9% higher than the control plots. When either roots or litter were excluded, DON concentrations …

Impacts Of Wildlife Viewing: A Case Study Of Dixville Notch Wildlife Viewing Area, Judith Kay Anderson Silverberg Jan 2000

Impacts Of Wildlife Viewing: A Case Study Of Dixville Notch Wildlife Viewing Area, Judith Kay Anderson Silverberg

Doctoral Dissertations

Major objectives of this study were to examine the motivations, knowledge level and attitudes of wildlife viewers as well as the response of moose to observation and other human caused stimuli at a designated wildlife viewing site. Moose and other wildlife are attracted to areas where road salt runoffs and pools in low areas around culverts and ditches creating wildlife viewing opportunities.

This study examined whether moose behaviors such as visitation time and rate of use of the salt lick changed from preconstruction (1996) of a wildlife blind to wildlife viewing establishment (1999). Trailmaster monitors strategically located on trails entering …

An Investigation Of Social Skill Group Counseling Intervention With At-Risk Students, Kathy A. Bennett Jan 2000

An Investigation Of Social Skill Group Counseling Intervention With At-Risk Students, Kathy A. Bennett

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of teaching social skills to a group of 14 at-risk kindergarten students that were identified by their classroom teachers as exhibiting social skills deficits. A pre-test and post-test experimental design was devised using the Social Skills Direct Observation by Sheridan (1997). Students participated in a group social ski11s training program for five weeks. A statistical comparison between the pre and post test data was then performed by means of a nonparametric procedure. Results of the Wilcoxon's Matched Pairs-Signed-Ranks Test were indicative of positive gains in the students' acquisition of social …

Are Iq Discrepancies Between Ses Groups Primarily The Result Of Verbal Scale Differences?, Carol Lee Macnaught Jan 2000

Are Iq Discrepancies Between Ses Groups Primarily The Result Of Verbal Scale Differences?, Carol Lee Macnaught

Open Access Dissertations

Historically, comparison groups of children from low socioeconomic status (SES) have done less well on intelligence tests than their more well-to-do counterparts. This study was undertaken to explore the contribution of verbal ability to general intelligence and to consider the possibility of developmental change in the relative contributions of the verbal and performance scales. The analyses used verbal, performance, and full scale scores of a subgroup of the standardization sample of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III). The scores used were attained by children in three age groups (7, 11, and 15 years) with four levels …

Universal Newborn Screening For Developmental Risk, Grace Cox Ashton

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between at-birth risk factors and three year child developmental outcome. The purpose of this study was to design a multifactor risk screening system to identify those children who are at risk for developmental delay and behavior problems in Rhode Island. The sample was drawn from three separate datasets: the Rhode Island Universal Newborn Screening (Level One) database (N=27,282), the Early Intervention (El) database (N=l ,793), and the Maternal Lifestyle Study Providence/Teen samples (N= 311). Study One investigated the predictive probability of Level One for EI eligibility by age three. Results showed that Level One has …

Maintaining Behavioral Changes: A Descriptive Account From Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes, Rosemary Fedrigon Hall Jan 2000

Maintaining Behavioral Changes: A Descriptive Account From Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes, Rosemary Fedrigon Hall

Open Access Dissertations

Type 2 diabetes is a serious metabolic disorder occurring in over 90% of the people in the United States diagnosed with diabetes. The standard treatment for type 2 diabetes requires individuals to self-manage a diet, exercise, and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) to control blood glucose levels and reduce the onset of serious complications. Although there is a plethora of literature addressing the difficulty individuals have to maintain these three behaviors, few studies exist describing how these behaviors are sustained. This descriptive qualitative study was designed to learn how individuals with type 2 diabetes maintained behavioral changes of diet, exercise, …

Foreword To Amicus Brief On The Status Of Palestinian Refugees Under International Refugee Law, Guy Goodwin-Gill, Susan M. Akram

Faculty Scholarship

Palestinian refugees have a status that is unique under international refugee law. Unlike any other group or category of refugees in the world, Palestinians are singled out for exceptional treatment in the major international legal instruments which govern the rights and obligations of states towards refugees: the 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol; the Statute of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; and, specifically with regard to the Palestinians, the Regulations governing the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East. Almost all states …

Determination Of Larval Fish Survival From Feeding And Distribution Observations, David Vernon Pollock Conway Jan 2000

Determination Of Larval Fish Survival From Feeding And Distribution Observations, David Vernon Pollock Conway

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The series of papers round which this thesis is based highlight the inherent problems in assessing larval fish feeding success from sampling programmes and gut contents analysis, and show through novel observations, that counting the number of food items in the gut is not necessarily a good indication of feeding success. Food type, digestibility and size, gut passage rates and the particular lipid classes the food contains, must all be considered, illustrating the difficulties in interpreting larval fish energetics from field studies. The resistance to digestion demonstrated for copeped eggs, means that a potentially rich source of energy cannot be …
