The Effects Of Music On Pain And Anxiety During Intravenous Insertion In The Emergency Department, Paula R. Nichols Jan 2000

The Effects Of Music On Pain And Anxiety During Intravenous Insertion In The Emergency Department, Paula R. Nichols

Masters Theses

The majority of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) are anxious and experiencing some degree of pain. Betty Neuman's Neuman system model, provided the theoretical framework to explore and describe the effects of music on the pain and anxiety experienced during peripheral intravenous (IV) insertion in the ED. A convenience sample of 41 subjects completed pain and anxiety visual analogue scales as well as blood pressure and pulse monitoring before and after IV insertion. Twenty-one of those subjects received music during the intervention.

An analysis of covariance was performed for post-procedure pain, anxiety, pulse, and blood pressure. Anxiety was …

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is prevalent and patients with CHF incur costly hospital readmissions. It is crucial to reduce rehospitalizations and improve self-care in these patients. This blind experimental study based on Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory evaluated two nursing interventions provided to 49 home care patients with CHF from 42 to 94 years of age in western Michigan. The study results were drawn from a larger longitudinal study in progress by researcher Dr. Kay Setter-KIine, RN. PhD. One group received supportive-educative interventions and the other received placebo interventions. The study sought to determine if supportive-educative nursing interventions improved medication …

The Health Belief Model And Self Breast Examination In Nurses, Valerie L. Holwerda Jan 2000

The Health Belief Model And Self Breast Examination In Nurses, Valerie L. Holwerda

Masters Theses

The relationship between frequency of self breast examination and health belief model variables was assessed using a convenience sample of nurses. The self-administered survey measured perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, health motivation, and confidence on 5-point Likert-type scales previously developed by Champion (1993). Individual items measured the frequency of self breast examination and demographic variables. Correlational statistics were used to determine relationships. The results of the data analysis using the Spearman correlation found that perceived benefits (p=.027), health motivation (p=.0289) and confidence (p=.008) were positively correlated with frequency of self breast examination. Perceived barriers (p=.0002) were negatively …

Parameterization And Sensitivity Analysis Of The Biome-Bgc Terrestrial Ecosystem Model: Net Primary Production Controls, Michael A. White, Peter Edmond Thornton, Steven W. Running, Ramakrishna R. Nemani Jan 2000

Parameterization And Sensitivity Analysis Of The Biome-Bgc Terrestrial Ecosystem Model: Net Primary Production Controls, Michael A. White, Peter Edmond Thornton, Steven W. Running, Ramakrishna R. Nemani

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Ecosystem simulation models use descriptive input parameters to establish the physiology, biochemistry, structure, and allocation patterns of vegetation functional types, or biomes. For single-stand simulations it is possible to measure required data, but as spatial resolution increases, so too does data unavailability. Generalized biome parameterizations are then required. Undocumented parameter selection and unknown model sensitivity to parameter variation for larger-resolution simulations are currently the major limitations to global and regional modeling. The authors present documented input parameters for a process-based ecosystem simulation model, BIOME–BGC, for major natural temperate biomes. Parameter groups include the following: turnover and mortality; allocation; carbon to …

This dissertation, although designed to estimate annual nesting rates, provides additional meaningful information on methods of capture, tag retention rates, nest spacing patterns, segregation of size classes, nest site fidelity, the relationship between attendance and nest success, the effects of fire ants on alligator nest success, the relationship between hatchling alligators and their mother, and hatchling dispersal. Passive integrated transponder (PIT), monel web, and cranial mounted reflector tags were evaluated for marking and identifying alligators. Use of harmonic …

Traumatic Life Events, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, And Health Outcomes In A Low -Income, Primary Care Population., Bradford West Applegate Jan 2000

Traumatic Life Events, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, And Health Outcomes In A Low -Income, Primary Care Population., Bradford West Applegate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research suggests that individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have significant dysregulation in a number of physiological indices, especially the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Biological theories of PTSD propose that prolonged SNS and HPA axis dysregulation places individuals with PTSD at risk for development of medical morbidity and impairments in health status. The present study examined the following research questions: (a) what is the prevalence of traumatic life events and PTSD in a low-income primary care population? (b) does PTSD predict impairments in self-reported health status after controlling for age, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and obesity? …

Effects Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Transgenic Cotton On Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Larval Development, Mortality, Population Dynamics, And Resistance Management On Soybean., Christopher Glen Clemens Jan 2000

Effects Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Transgenic Cotton On Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Larval Development, Mortality, Population Dynamics, And Resistance Management On Soybean., Christopher Glen Clemens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In laboratory bioassays, total mortality (neonate to pupation) among Bt-cotton varieties ranged from 13 to 89%; however, only cvs. CK 312/531, NuCOTN 33B, and PM 1220 RR/BG caused greater mortality than the soybean and meridic diet controls. Several Bt-cotton hosts increased larval developmental time, but none of the commercial Bt-cotton varieties (excluding CK 312/531) significantly affected adult longevity, generation time, doubling time, or intrinsic rate of increase (rm). Soybean looper larval and predator densities were monitored in soybean fields to determine the impact of Bt-cotton production on soybean looper seasonal abundance. Throughout the study, peak soybean looper larval densities were …

The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn Jan 2000

The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dietary n-3 fatty acids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were shown to have cancer preventive and tumor regressive effects. Fatty acids and NSAIDs are substrate and inhibitors, respectively, of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is a key enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acids to prostaglandins. Thus, the modulating effects of different types of dietary fatty acids and NSAIDs on the expression of COX-2 are studied here. Results show that both n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) inhibit Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COX-2 expression and NF-kappaB activation in macrophages. Results from in vitro cell proliferation study indicate that growth of colon tumor cells …

This study sought to determine if a statistical relationship exists between alcohol abuse rates of inmates serving time in Louisiana and their convictions for violent crimes. The research design used to investigate the relationship between alcohol abuse and violent criminal behavior was non-experimental and correlational. Interviews …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul Jan 2000

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994, a sweet potato sample showing leaf curl symptoms was collected from the field in Louisiana. When graft-inoculated, Ipomoea setosa reacted with mild upward leaf curling while I. aquatica reacted with a bright yellow mottle. The putative virus was transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, and it was designated the United States isolate of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV-US). Four independent Southern blot hybridizations using the DNA-A of different begomoviruses as probes confirmed the presence of begomovirus-like DNA in the infected plants. Fibrillar inclusions and granular aggregates of geminivirus-like particles were observed in the …

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe Jan 2000

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Obesity, a recognized health problem, is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. Removal of adrenal steroids by adrenalectomy (ADX) slows the development of obesity. Leptin decreases food intake through effects initiated by activation of the JAK-STAT pathway. Defects in leptin signaling lead to obesity, which is associated with hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance. In chapter 4, leptin induces phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) mRNA expression and increases glucose production in hepatocytes from lean but not obese Zucker rats. This suggests that hyperleptinemia in obesity causes hyperglycemia. In chapter 5, ADX decreased the levels of PEPCK mRNA, and increased leptin receptor mRNA expression …
