Growth And Variations In Proline, Sodium, Chloride, Phosphorus And Potassium Concentrations Of Chickpea ( Cicer Arietinuml. Cvs.) Varieties Under Salinity Stress, Hesna Özcan, Murat Ali̇ Turan, Özlem Koç, Yakup Çikili, Süleyman Taban
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Under salinity stress, growth and variations in proline, Na, Cl, P and K concentrations of three chickpea varieties (Canitez- 87, ILC-195/2 and Damla), which are cultivated widely in Turkey, were investigated. For this purpose, experimental soil was salinized with 68 mmol kg ^{-1}NaCl. The salinity responses of chickpea varieties were compared by means of various plant parameters. According to the results, Damla was affected by salinity stress much more than Canitez-87 and ILC-195/2 cultivars. However, under salinity stress, the dry weight of the Damla variety was influenced much less than the others. Sodium and Cl contents were generally found to …

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik
The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
The link between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
With the adoption of Conservation by Design in 1995, The Nature Conservancy recognized the importance of working at larger scales to achieve our mission which is: the long-term survival of all viable native species and community types through the design and conservation of portfolios of sites within ecoregions. The Conservancy set forth to design conservation plans on an ecoregional basis by working closely with various conservation partners. These plans are intended to provide a framework within which the Conservancy and our partners, such as the Natural Heritage Programs, can make decisions regarding conservation actions to be taken at the …
Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2000 Annual Report
Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2000 Annual Report
Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports
Gray wolf populations (Canis lupus) were extirpated from the western U.S. by the 1930s. Subsequently, wolves from Canada occasionally dispersed south into Montana and Idaho but failed to survive long enough to reproduce. Public attitudes toward predators changed and wolves received legal protection with the passage of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973. Wolves began to successfully recolonize northwest Montana in the early 1980s. By 1995, 6 packs lived entirely in northwestern Montana. In 1995 and 1996, 66 wolves from southwestern Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) (31 wolves) and central Idaho (35 wolves). The …

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis
Nebraska Swine Reports
An experiment is being conducted on commercial swine operations to determine if plasma urea concentration can be used as an indicator of protein status in growing-finishing pigs. Swine producers in Eastern Nebraska are being selected to participate in this on-farm study. The experiment includes the completion of a 30-question survey and an on-farm visit for the collection of blood and feed samples. The survey includes questions about genetics, nutrition, housing and health. Preliminary results suggest that crude protein is overfed in most finishing diets. Gilts consistently have lower plasma urea concentrations than barrows when gilts and barrows are fed the …

Feeding Habits Of Juvenile Lane Snapper Lutjanus Synagris From Mississippi Coastal Waters, With Comments On The Diet Of Gray Snapper Lutjanus Griseus, James S. Franks, Katherine E. Vanderkooy
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Stomach contents analysis was used to quantitatively describe the diets of juvenile lane snapper, Lutjanus synagris, and juvenile gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus, from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Juvenile snapper were collected by trawling at two estuarine, deep channel sites in Mississippi coastal waters from September 1996 to January 1997. Lane snapper (n = 53) and gray snapper (n = 12) both consumed a variety of prey organisms, but primary prey were amphipods, decapods (shrimp and crabs), and fishes. The most important prey items for lane snapper based on percent Index of Relative Importance (%IRI) were shrimp remains …

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In November 1999, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology was authorized to examine and report upon developments since the release of Of Life and Death, the final report of the Special Senate Committee on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide. A subcommittee to update Of Life and Death was therefore established. On February 14, 2000, I participated in the first panel of witnesses before this subcommittee. In light of the subcommittee's mandate, I set myself the following two tasks: first, to update the legal status sections of Of Life and Death by reporting on any changes to the …

The Impact Of Managed Care Payer Contracts On The Subspecialty Medical Provider: Policy Implications That Impact On The Care Of Disabled Children, Dr. Stephanie Rifkinson-Mann
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This Note explores the impact of current managed care contractual practices on the subspecialty provider's ability to deliver health care to chronically ill and disabled children. In doing so, it delves into the historical events giving rise to the development of health care reform. It then reviews various physician agreements with several managed care organizations ("MCOs") to demonstrate how contract conditions affect compensation for pediatric neurosurgical services. This Note then details the impact of managed care on the management of the chronic health problems of such children and proposes alternative solutions for affordable health care delivery systems for poor, medically …

The dependent variable was defined as the amount of general fund monies used to support specialEducation programs. This study was completed in Indiana including all Indiana public school corporations. The sample of school corporations was selected from the three defined variables …
Antipredator Vigilance Of Juvenile And Adult Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels And The Role Of Nutritional Need, Cody Arenz, Daniel Leger
Antipredator Vigilance Of Juvenile And Adult Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels And The Role Of Nutritional Need, Cody Arenz, Daniel Leger
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Juvenile thirteen-lined ground squirrels, Spermophilus tridecemlineatus, are less vigilant (i.e. they spend less time visually scanning the environment) than adults. To determine whether nutritional need was a potential cause of this difference, we supplemented two groups of free-ranging juveniles during the predispersal stage, while juveniles were still near and around the natal burrows. The high-energy food group (HEF: 11 squirrels) received peanut butter and oats while the low-energy food group (LEF: seven squirrels) received lettuce. Adults (14 squirrels) were also supplemented, but due to their greater home range sizes, it was not feasible to classify them as either HEF …
Qualitative And Quantitative Chances In Ubiquitin Transcripts During Dictyostelium Mucoroides Development., Vincent Van Rothe
Qualitative And Quantitative Chances In Ubiquitin Transcripts During Dictyostelium Mucoroides Development., Vincent Van Rothe
Student Work
The slime mold Dictyostelium mucoroides is an effective model for studying eukaryotic development because it exists as both unicellular and multicellular entities depending on the stage of their life cycle. Development is regulated by a number of proteins. During the transition from single amebas to a multicellular entity, developmentally regulated proteins appear. In the case of the microcysts, produced during sexual reproduction, proteins not only function in the formation of the cell walls, but also aid in the fusion of gametes, selective phagocytosis, cell to cell contact, and make up lysosomal enzymes. We have cloned a developmentally regulated gene whose …

The Challenges Of Globally Accessible Process, Peter L. Strauss
The Challenges Of Globally Accessible Process, Peter L. Strauss
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter embraces the strategic use of the Internet for achieving new forms of transparency and participation in the regulatory cooperation process. It explores ‘the challenges of globally accessible process’ through the use of new information technologies. It holds that the incorporation of these technologies in agency processes at the US federal level has created possibilities for the most transparent, participatory, and broadly deliberative regulatory system in the world to become still more so. The Internet promises not merely to expand access to information about the substance and process of regulation, but also to ‘move the government closer to the …
Maternal-Infant Nurses' Knowledge Of Breast Feeding, Wendy S. Kershner
Maternal-Infant Nurses' Knowledge Of Breast Feeding, Wendy S. Kershner
Masters Theses
This study explored the level of knowledge related to breastfeeding among maternal-infant nurses. It also explored whether there was a relationship between nurses' breastfeeding knowledge and level of education, type of clinical experience, years of experience and personal experience with breastfeeding.
A convenience sample of 67 maternal-infant nurses completed a modified version of Leadley's (1994) Breastfeeding Knowledge and Attitudes Survey.
Descriptive and correlational statistics were used to analyze the relationship between the variables and the nurse's breastfeeding knowledge. Data analysis revealed a mean score of 13.2 out of 20 questions on nurses' breastfeeding knowledge. There was no significant difference in …

Nurse Practitioners' Perceptions And Use Of Nursing Diagnoses, Gay R. Kaashoek
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of nursing diagnoses by nurse practitioners (NPs). Additionally, this study assessed NPs’ perceptions of the advantages and challenges to using nursing diagnoses. Data were collected by questionnaires mailed to a randomly selected national sample of 398 NPs.
Of the 249 participants, 48 NPs indicated that they use nursing diagnoses. No significant differences were found between nursing diagnosis use and selected demographic characteristics or educational preparation. However, the use of nursing diagnoses was significantly higher among participants who were expected to use them as NP students (χ2= 22.012; p …
The Lived Experience Of Student Nurses Providing Health Care Relief To Hurricane Mitch Victims In Nicaragua, Marci Jo Holstege
The Lived Experience Of Student Nurses Providing Health Care Relief To Hurricane Mitch Victims In Nicaragua, Marci Jo Holstege
Masters Theses
International exchange and cultural immersion is becoming a favored way to educate nursing students on cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity. There is no research literature about student nurses rendering health care in a third world country after the turmoil of a natural disaster.
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover the lived experience of student nurses who provided health care relief to victims of Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua. Their oral descriptions were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. These descriptions were then analyzed using the Giorgi method. Four focal meanings emerged: a) culture shock, b) adjustments, c) lessons learned, …
